2016 Rolex Australian Grand Prix

It's amazing how far safety has progressed when it comes to these cars. That was pretty brutal, and it's nothing short of amazing that Alonso walked away from that unscathed.

Alonso clipped the back of him under brakes into 3. Not Estebasn fault.

Red flag!

He broke quite early, Alonso switched not expecting that. I'm not saying it's his fault but his race form hasn't always been something others envy, not sure why he felt to brake so early.

I'm still trying to comprehend how Alonso has walked away without much worry.

Engineering and good luck, Esteban looked seriously worried there as did everyone when they realised that was behind the Haas car was an actual car.

Call me crazy but that wasn't as bad as the aftermath had suggested - rolling through the gravel had just flung so many pieces off the car. I thought he had collided heavily with the catch fencing or something.

That's I thought too, that first shot of the car was terrifying though

Had that happened in the 90's, I doubt Alonso would have walked away.
To be fair to the 90s cars Brundle crashed there in similar fashion and speed in 1995 and was alright. Hell he ran to get the spare car!

Glad Alonso is safe, if any thing pointy or with any edge, hit the cockpit it would have been nasty and an excuse to use those god awful "Halos".

Really front pillar is in front of the driver blocking their view, how is the smart?

Gravel had nothing to do with that, the grass is what sent Alonso airborne.

Though a paved runoff would have just sent Alonso spearing into the barrier since he had no way of slowing down.

The only casualty in this is the 50 m approach sign. Good that the only casualty is a pylon.

And along with the horrible flip, that was a very hard impact into the concrete wall and the sudden stop at the end.

Ted Kravitz announces that the red flag is good for Hamilton. Martin Brundle immediately points out that it's bad for Hamilton.

Looks like Gutierrez got on the brakes very early.

Initial contact with the wall shaved off a lot of speed. Alonso pretty much went into the wall bum-first once he flipped.

It was a normal racing incident with quite spectacular consequences.

Whoa, just saw it at full speed, Alonso went over sooooooo quickly.

Martin Brundle once said "You're not a proper F1 driver until you've rolled it". Alonso has just had his initiation.

I'm just glad Alonso is OK after that and the cameraman behind that fence is lucky as I think it was just down at that corner a Marshall got killed by a flying wheel.

This incident is a message to those who want safety measures repealed, or think that motorsport is "too safe".

There's no such thing as too safe.

I don't enjoy watching drivers have potentially fatal accidents, and I don't ever want to see drivers getting injured, or worse, in preventable incidents. No true motorsport fan should want that.

The strive for safety should never end. This is the ultimate example of why that is.

Rollovers always look very scary but they also dissapate a lot of energy, and the car looking a mess showed it did its job perfectly - crash structures absorbed energy whilst the survival cell remained intact.

Other F1 drivers disagreed with that, but it's been well covered in the thread discussing it.

That wasn't due to the gravel. The car looked to have started rotating prior to the gravel.
It looked to me like it dug into the gravel and flipped.

Thinking on it now, tarmac doesn't improve that crash one bit anyway.

This probably helps those who haven't stopped yet or stopped early, though I don't know the order.
