2017 F1 Constructor technical info/developmentFormula 1

I think these big, heavy, powerful, complex cars will be bearing greater loads than ever before, so maybe we'll see some parts break under the strain?

My own worry is the tyres; Pirelli have been pushing for 18" wheels to reduce the length of the sidewall load but F1 has been saying "no". Personally I think the 18" wheels look okay on Formula-E cars, it's my expectation that wheel see them in F1 next year.

My own worry is the tyres;
Amen, bro. The rubber will shriek, shred and break up worse than last year - unless Pirelli delivers its wonted fix. I even seem to recall a couple of blowouts from last year. But wasn't the team/driver held solely to blame for these? :mischievous:

Pirelli make tyres which are deliberately not bulletproof to make the racing exciting and people won't stop bitching about the inferior quality of the tyres. They could easily make um.. actual tyres if they were told to do so by the powers that be. But if we went back to bulletproof Bridgestones of 1997-2008 people wouldn't stop bitching too because borrrrrrrrring.

You can't please anyone.

Stupid rules led to 2005's farce. That wasn't Bridgestone's fault.

If NASCAR fans were shocked by the appearance of the Monster Energy Girls’ outfits this weekend, they clearly didn’t hear the promises that the company’s vice president of sports marketing, Mitch Covington, made earlier this year when discussing Monster Energy’s debut as the title sponsor of NASCAR’s Cup Series. “Monster, we were built on girls, music and racing,” Covington said in January. “We think that fits with NASCAR really good.’’

Point taken - but I'm not talking about the contact surface, I'm referring to the side structure. Pirelli have never been asked to construct a tyre that fails in the sidewall for very obvious reasons. Nobody has ever been asked to build a racing tyre with this kind of load, it's really unknown territory.

Nice helmet for Max. I really wish more drivers would get a unique helmet though and stick with it for their career. I liked how Coulthard etc. stuck with the scottish flag on his helmet (regardless of other added bits/sponsors) and you could easily identify him. The changing a helmet each race crap has to stop.

Renault have already admitted that this is not the car that will be seen in testing, and that the car that will be seen in testing is not the car that will compete in Melbourne. It's hard to pass judgement of an incomplete car off the back of a few poorly-staged studio photos. Testing is when I think we'll get a more accurate idea of the cars.

Yes that obvious, I would say all the cars we see in testing wont be what we see come Melbourne, that's what testing does, makes you reaffirm design or scrap it and start fresh in some manner. As for the studio photos they're not at all bad, I have several up that have a gray background and show the car in a good manner. Better than the black background.

Anyone know what time Force India are launching tonight?

The changing a helmet each race crap has to stop.
The FIA cracked down on it last year - drivers were allowed one change per season, usually for a home race.

But annoying as Vettel's habit of changing helmets was, I read somewhere that he commissioned a new one every time he won a race and either gave the race-winning helmet away or auctioned it off for charity; if true, I think that we can forgive him for it. But I can't remember where I read it.

He always had the same basic design at Ferrari the white base with the German flag offset stripe. But I do believe after races he auctioned them off

As PM said it did stop and it's actually been stopped for a couple years now, ever since Vettel moved to Ferrari it hasn't been a thing. Since he was the worst abuser of the trend.

2pm UK time. So around the same time as the Renault was launched.
Cool. After looking at the time zone difference, that means that the car is launching some time between why-the-hell-am-I-still-awake? and please-God-just-let-me-sleeep!, so that's good to know.

I'm hoping they move away from silver and black. Renault have gone for yellow and black, so I'm hoping for some variety. Maybe they should go back to orange, white and green.

Agreed. The 2014 livery was pretty good, but they've just gone with the bland grey since. We're 3 for 3 in terms of cars that are great to look at and this streak needs to keep going. 2017 might if anything be the most aesthetically pleasing year in a while.

Yeah, I'd like to be awake for all these launches, but the Renault and now Force India launch times are just crazy for Australians  Good news for me though, as McLaren is launching theirs relatively early according to their Twitter. I'd say around the same time, of not earlier, than the Sauber was.

Anyway, really hoping Force India can provide something new and continue the trend of great looking cars for 2017.

McLaren are releasing their car on the same day as Ferrari, so it makes sense to release it early
