Well that was a good race for me, but far from error free. Luckily my fellow drivers seemed busy tripping up over each other so that my errors weren't costly.
Qualy was great, although my first lap was a dud, my second was a 1:09.9 which I thought would hopefully be enough for pole but I decided not to rest on my laurels and went for it in the final lap, pulling out my fastest ever non draft assisted lap here for a 1:09.5. Just as well, even that was only enough to grab pole by a single tenth off birthday boy Kakundoo who proved his pace here with a 1:09.6
Though I was really happy to have got the pole, Jamie's pace had me very worried for the race. We both got good starts, and I kept the inside line so as to avoid any accidents by cutting across Jamie on the racing line. I went into turn 2 (officially, turn 1 here is actually turn 2 because of the slight kink on the main straight) ahead of Kakundoo but he out braked me and we took the corner side by side. I had the racing line and drove on only to see Jamie rear wingless behind me as I pulled away. Needless to say, Jamie's bad luck made my job a hell of a lot easier. The thought of trying to keep back a driver for 20 laps who is equal on pace with you, but with the benefit of your slipstream wasn't my cup of tea.
From there on I tried to drive consistently but knew that my provisional fastest lap of 1:09.9 was easily beatable by several of the drivers on show tonight so on a couple of occasions I pushed in order to better this. However, I pushed too hard on one occasion - getting on the throttle a tad early, running wide at turn 5 and planting my car in the wall
Fortunately I had about a 20 second gap behind me so I got away with this clumsy error. On another lap I just about avoided leaving my signature on the wall of champions. On a reasonable lap (still 3 tenths down on my best by the end of the 2nd sector) I noticed David Coulthard just infront of me, and I picked up his slipstream to good effect all the way down the backstraight and then almost straightlined the final chicane, somehow avoiding a penalty and I set a better lap. Funnily enough the following lap I managed a time just a few thousandths slower without any draft when I didn't need to push so hard, but it's a really fun track so I couldn't help it
I otherwise avoided any serious mistakes and didn't get any penalties which was a pleasant surprise. Sorry I wasn't more error prone tonight Jamie as I fully expected to be, it would have made a nice birthday present for you
We should have had a closer race together. Ducky seemed to be back on form tonight putting in a strong showing along with Hemi for Williams' best race to date, and Red Bull keep on churning out the podiums. As you can see from the tables, it is simply a matter of time before Red Bull overtake Jordan GP in the standings.
Good race everyone and we had a good turn out despite neither of the Brawn or Jordan No. 2 drivers showing up yet again
Here's the tables for the halfway point of the season (Bahrain seems so long ago), please update, birthday boy if you'd be so kind
As always, could people please report any errors or omissions and i'll fix them ASAP 👍
