Slot 1: Qualified a somewhat disappointing 6th after messing up every single qualifying attempt after my first flying lap. I was up on my previous lap in the first 2 sectors multiple times but couldn't seal the deal. I could've had at least 5th on the grid, as they were only 0.003s ahead at the end of qualifying. Had I been even remotely close to my FP pace I should've been contending for pole, but whatever, I could probably make up spots in the race just by staying clean...
The one good thing about starting in P6 specifically is that for some reason the game makes 7th place hang back a ridiculous amount at the start, with a gap at least twice the distance to the car in front of it compared to the rest of the gaps in the field. That meant I could take it easy into T1 while my tires warmed up without worrying about losing out to the car behind. A few laps later, the Mercedes ahead of me got the entry to T1 wrong and allowed me to get a run up the inside to the hairpin (Druids). Unfortunately I braked a hair too late and allowed the Merc to get a cut back, so positions stayed the same.
Meanwhile, a WRX that started several spots behind me on Softs had forced his way through the field and was right behind me headed into the final corner. I slightly outbraked myself there too, allowing him a relatively easy pass up the inside, putting me down to 7th. When I saw how much he pulled away after that, I figured he was on Mediums and I'd catch him later, so when I saw the red "S" icon when he entered the pits, I was even more relieved because I knew he'd have an extra pit stop to make, so I no longer had to worry about passing him again.
Meanwhile, the Mazda that started and was running in 3rd spun out of Graham Hill, putting me back up to 6th. The WRX on Softs pitted, moving me up to 5th, then a GT500 Supra that was just behind the WRX when it pitted also pitted the next lap (Lap 10) and swapped to Mediums to run for the remaining 15 laps. Another WRX that had started on Mediums and was running in 2nd also pitted at the same time, so for the moment I was up to 3rd. The FT-1 that started behind me and was staying in my slipstream for most of the first stint then ran wide at the exit of T1 and allowed
@Geauxgreddy past. He was now behind me for a few laps before pitting on Lap 15. I came in the next lap to hopefully fend off an undercut, and managed to do so, emerging back onto the track between him and the Supra GT500 that was trying to run extra long on his Mediums. With his Mediums already starting to wear, it only took a few laps before I was all over him, and coming out of the final corner he lost traction and had to lift to keep from spinning. This gave me an easy run up the inside down the front straight into 4th place.
From there I slowly reeled in 3rd and 2nd, but was still a couple seconds behind on the final lap when the 2nd place Mercedes (that I'd tried to pass early on in the race) lost the back end coming out of Graham Hill, overcorrected, and went off track, shoving the WRX that was now on his outside into the grass with him. The Merc slid into the wall, gifting me 3rd, while the WRX managed to keep going forward and returned to the track at the penultimate corner. His dirty tires caused him to really struggle, but unfortunately he was just far enough ahead to ward off any challenge from me, so I finished 3rd for 286 points - my best result in both position and points so far this season.
