Gran Turismo 6 players may not notice any improvements in the game’s engine notes come its release on December 6, although series kingpin Kazunori Yamauchi admits they may provide an audio overhaul to GT6 owners via a patch later on.

“I think I mentioned this in the past, but we're really working to change the fundamental way that the engine sound works,” Yamauchi said in a press event at Polyphony Digital’s Tokyo office, reports Eurogamer. “Right now I have a feeling that it might not make it for day one for GT6.”

It’s impossible to make a case that Gran Turismo’s audio has improved at the same rate as the series’ visual and simulation aspects; GT5’s often anaemic engine notes proved a huge bugbear for many.

Fortunately, it’s possible that improved audio could be patched in down the track; “There’s a good possibility that we might do this,” said Yamauchi when asked whether addressing the audio problem could be part of GT6’s post-release support.

Yamauchi also confirmed data from GT5 would not be recognised by GT6.

“For Gran Turismo 5 to Gran Turismo 6 there’ll be no real transfer of data,” he said. “The main reason for that is the GT5 save data has been cracked already, so we can’t really confirm the validity of the save data.”

Yamauchi hopes that data will be able to be transferred from GT6 to GT7.

The engine noises in the release version of Gran Turismo 6 likely won't see a significant improvement over those in Gran Turismo 5 - though series creator Kazunori Yamauchi hopes to improve them in a post release patch.

Gran Turismo's audio has long been a source of criticism, with its weak engine notes paling in comparison to the more full-throated tune of competitors such as Forza's cars. That situation will most likely remain when Gran Turismo 6 launches in December later this year.

"I think I mentioned this in the past, but we're really working to change the fundamental way that the engine sound works," Yamauchi said in a press event at Polyphony's offices in Tokyo. "Right now I have a feeling that it might not make it for day one for GT6."

There's still hope that improved audio will be patched in at a later date. "There's a good possibility that we might do this," Yamauchi said when pressed on whether it'll be part of the post-release support, and Gran Turismo at least has good form in this regard - Gran Turismo 5 benefited from a series of updates that resulted in a much improved version 2.0.

Data from Gran Turismo 5 won't be recognised by Gran Turismo 6, though, and any progress made in the last game in the series will be lost by those making the jump. "For Gran Turismo 5 to Gran Turismo 6 there'll be no real transfer of data," Yamauchi said. "The main reason for that is the GT5 save data has been cracked already, so we can't really confirm the validity of the save data. So my hope is that between GT6 and GT7 we can transfer some of that across."

Gran Turismo 6 introduces a new physics model that fundamentally changes the handling of the game to good effect, and it's to be supported post-release with regular updates - one of which could introduce day/night cycles to more tracks. On release, only Spa, Nurburgring and Le Mans will support the feature.

"Unfortunately it's not for all the tracks that [a day/night cycle] will be implemented," said Yamauchi. "Obviously we want to include day/night racing for all tracks, but that won't make it for day one. For the day one, all the tracks that are known for 24 hour races, all those tracks will be made available for day/night racing."

Night racing has improved for Gran Turismo 6, though. "The dispersion of light from the headlights has advanced greatly from GT5 to GT6," said Yamauchi. "So night racing should be a lot better in GT6.

Didn't they confirm that Apricot Hill will have Day/Night cycle at Gamescom?

IF it is can't say I'm shocked or surprised. Also I'm curious will the studio blame the fans again in essence to say "well they were expecting GT6 to be on time (dec 6th my bday :D) after the delays they dealt with in other GT games so..."

If they do, that'd be quite stupid on their part. I guess they rather jump out in front of it now rather than wait till we get it and find out and then tell us.

Looks like GT5 all over again, piss poor communication, broken promises and a half finished game.

Funny thing is, we're all assuming this breakthrough they are working on will give us super realistic sounds in the future. What if it's just a slightly different version of the "too perfect" sounds we already have? Imagine the uproar!!

Might kind of feel like this:

I think this is just the Japanese way of saying. "no"

For some of us, that means there won't be any transferring of Course Maker tracks, for sure. :/

At least, this is a question that was answered for me.

Can't say I'm surprised. The moment he mentioned that he wasn't sure if they would make it in time for GT6's launch I I presumed GT7.

Agreed. No surprise. There was no indication of sound improvements in GTA 2013 or any Demos. Same with AI. Probably same with the ASPEC career too. New cars, new tracks, more online options, faster UI, advanced physics...that's it. Any more is just wishful thinking.

Well, since he said that some tracks will be updated to have time change (and I would think, weather), I think that means there's a good chance he's not just "saying a lot of things" considering that they've updated the sounds in GT5 often enough to realize that they'll be updating GT6 to the extent that they did with GT5. Kaz kept in mind that they would be updating GT6 and made it known (before this) that updating post-release wouldn't be the same as GT5, meaning that it'll be easier.

I really don't want to go digging into the articles or interviews and videos to show that's what they've done.

Bottom-line, I would be surprised if GT6 turns out to be as frustrating to play (and update), to us, as GT5 was.

How is that?

Piss poor communications? They've been extremely communitive with their fast for the 6th game. Broken promises? When was anything promised? Half finished game? Ohh, so you are playing the finished GT6 right now? Do tell the rest of us what it is like.

Perhaps do some actual reseach before talking BS? 💡

As for the news. Can't say I'm not annoyed by this. If the game isn't done by december 6th, then delay it. Better to have a fully finished game later on, than to have a rushed game. And as always, some people are massively overreacting on how the quality of the current engine sounds are. It needs to be better, but it ain't all bad.

GT is slowly becoming "The Real Update Simulator".

Though it is great nowadays knowing that any mistakes can be fixed in future updates, it seems that PD are really starting to take liberties with this. I am not a programmer or sound guy of any kind, however, I just don't understand why this is such an issue to get done, and done correctly.

Do PD not have adequate sound engineers to take care of this on their own? If they can't handle it, then someone in charge really needs to find other options. Money is not an issue over there, that much I can guarantee. Outsource if you have to. For the love of God at least let the premium cars have premium sound, and update the rest later.

The Real Update Simulator is a whole lot better than 'The Real DLC Simulator' though! *cough EA*

Even with an incomplete product they still sell a lot and the forum is full of people defending all their delays.
So, they have no problems releasing incomplete stuff at all.

Yea, I read that as we aren't getting better sounds any time soon.Hopefully if we make enough noise about this Sony might send them some help.

I'm not sure what your implying. Are you saying that because GT5 sold alot they are okay with releasing unfinished games, or are you saying because people on a forum "defend" a game they are okay with releasing incomplete game?
Either way neither of those makes any sense.I understand some of you are mad but try to remember its just a game.

They are not running for the money like SMS, ISI, SimBin, Kunos, if we want to be very pessimistic they know they'll still sell at least 3 milion copies. An unfinished product capable to deliver 3 milion copies is a business DREAM for every producer. Realstic prevision is something slightly lower than GT5 sales, wich still means 5 milion copies.

With these sales numbers they can troll in and out all their fanbase for years, since most of the people spending 60 bucks for GT6 will defend their purchase in the forums.
