Final winter event.

66 cars initially, but weather kept changing and they had to close of the section on the oval due to rain and how slick things were getting. First day running the Kuhmo XS, and I have to say I love them. However, I now know I need some new inserts for my struts, probably will go with Koni. Also, a front sway bar and some crash bolts are also on the list.

On the last setup we ran, a very very short course where the middle time was around 30 seconds, I got 11th in Raw times over all with a 31.467, with the best being a Stree Prepared VW R32 doing 29.783.

And I'll have pictures up later.

Oh look pics.

Bump for a just cause.

Anyhow, got back from autocrossing this weekend. Took the M3 out today, raced the MR-S yesterday, and let my friend drive the MR-S both days. He did very good in it, besting my own time on the first day by a tenth. On the second day, I took the M3 out after going over it carefully the night before, and ran a 50.0xx as my best for the day. My friend in the MR-S managed a 49.0xx, but I have to recall the M3 is on older and less grippy tires, along with blown shocks. And I've had the car 4 days, so there is a lot of time to be found.

I am hoping to make it to another set of events this up coming weekend, but I may have to work.

Also, pictures in a day or so.

Offtopic: Pics and vid of said M3 please?

There are some in my car thread, of which there is a link to in my signature. However, give me 10 or 15 minutes and I'll post a few up from my camera to both threads.

EDIT: Pictures

Damn you, that is a beautiful car! Congrats!

Just one second (or less) off your MR-S time with blown shocks and wonky tires? (and on an autocross, to boot...) Cripes, that is a quick car!

Vancouver Island Region Porsche Club #1

A somewhat frustrating day - My fastest time was a 60.2xx, but I also tagged a cone (the only one of the day, at that). After that was a 61.3xx. Had I gotten my fast run clean, I would have finally caught up to my nemesis in an RSX-S.
The only record I've got of results is on my cell phone, and I've no way of reading or transfering the photos... So I've no idea how I placed. We fit six runs into the afternoon, with a record (for the club) 40+ car field.

The feild I was competing against was absolutely gorgeous - Multiple 911 Turbos, a couple Cabrios and other various trims. There were a few 944s, some Turbo. And an immaculate XKE on Hoosiers, plus an Ariel Atom. And others. I succeeded in embarrassing my share of Porsches, thanks in part to the Azenis that will reside on my car for the rest of the summer.

Can has body roll?
Coilovers are very high up on the list... Hopefully by the end of this year, and mabye by the end of the racing season - Depends on how my side-business goes.

And considering that was my 5th run ever with the car, and having owned it since Wednesday evening. The greater stability in the slalom plus some quick tips from other good FR drivers in the club got me to sort out some time pretty fast. With proper tires and an alignment, plus shocks, I am sure I can compete somewhat.

Slicks, I always love beating some Porsches and such because of tires and a bit of driver skill. Feels good man.

Not trying hard enough your bumper isnt close enough to the road

also isn't fun when you start lifting wheels under throttle too...

OK, I'm officially jealous. That M3 is exactly what I wish I had time and garage space for. I'd love to have an event car. Maybe in a few years.

Event Log - April 19, 2009
Brandywine Motorsports Club / DE Valley PCA Autocross #1

Ran my D Stock 325i ZSP on 2-year-old Bridgestone RE-01Rs. They're my most-of-the-year daily driver tires so they have thousands of heat cycles on them. The car is bone stock and has 50,000 miles on it.

About 45-50 cars showed up, with an extremely wide range of conditions and preps. Some of the standouts:
  • Spec Miata racecar
  • Factory Five Cobra Daytona Coupe
  • Genuine Caterham 7
  • Z06 C5 Vette
  • Camaro SS
  • MGB with a Camaro 3.4l V6/5spd transplant
  • '84 bazillion-mile stock Rabbit diesel (non-turbo)
  • C-class AMG (I think C-class; the smallish sedan one)
  • Couple of older 911s, from well-restored to complete track rat
  • Half a dozen Boxsters/Caymans
  • Half a dozen Super-dorifto-JDM-yo 240SXs
  • Couple of AW-12 MR-2s, one roachy, one clean
  • Numerous of Miatae, from stock beater to well-sorted supercharged

There were a number of novices at this event, as well as some seasoned vets. My only in-class competition was a 2004 330i ZHP, which was gorgeous. The owner had done numerous track days but was low on autox experience.

The course was fun, if not huge. It was actually shaped a lot like the Carrol Shelby CS logo:

Carroll%20Shelby%20Logo.png

Start was at the checkered flag bit, and at the dead end of the S was a 180 U-turn around a single cone, whereupon you ran the course backward to exit near the start area. Of course there was a little more wiggle to it than that but that's the basic configuration. Laps were ranging anywhere from 75 seconds for the slow down to 57 or so seconds for the quick. FTOD was the Camaro SS, actually, somewhere in the low 57s. I never got to see that guy run because I was in the same group, but he must have driven it really well to beat some of the other iron out there. I didn't see what rubber he was running. Most fun looking car out there was a beater E30 that was not especially quick (or slow) but looked like an absolute ball to drive.

I was in the middle run group and we got 2 sets of 2 runs each. There were lots and lots of DNFs because of people getting lost on course. It was actually a fairly straightforward layout with very few tricks and I was somewhat amazed at how bollixed up many people got. People were zooming all over the place and going way off course to go through gates they shouldn't have been anywhere near.

I did not get any DQed runs because I guess I had walked the course enough to follow it. On my second run I got one cone at an apex right near the exit. My driving was pretty smooth, though I probably could have pushed a lot harder in some areas. My times fell over my 4 runs (65.mid", 64.6" + 1 cone, 64.low", 63.335"). I won D Stock over the 330i who was about 2" behind me.

One of the more-or-less stock Miatae, running R-comps, lost it on the slalom (across the top side of the C above). The back end stepped out and he braked too much and spun, backing the car up onto a curb right into one of the flag stations, killing a fire extinguisher and hanging the car up. Luckily he did surprisingly little damage and we were able to lift it off easily enough. Other than that there were no damage incidents though some of the slammed 240SXs looked ready to fly out of control at any moment. The guys in the Cobra, Zo6, and SS all showed remarkable restraint in not spinning, since it was not a very open course.

Overall it was a hoot and I think I drove better than I ever have, looking ahead, braking early, and driving smoothly and proactively. Unfortunately this is a small group and there are no real instructors. I'd love to have some real in-car feedback.

The S4 wouldn't have been out of place... You'd have creamed the AMG sedan.

A bunch of missed shots later, exiting the course. There was a very tight 90 left into the trap here. The timing lights almost got mangled a bunch of times (the reflector stand, anyway). Not by me.

So, gearing up for the second event of the season this Saturday, at a different (and even smaller) site. I'm hoping to get my car aligned this week but it will be a tough week all round, and I don't know if I have time to get it done.

I hope to make a Philly region event some time this summer, at their new site at the stadium lot.

I need to get the M3 put together and fixed - there is a drift event on the 4th near by, and I'd just love to show up the cut spring/JDM tyte crowd.

I don't know man, some of those 240 guys can kick it. Think you can handle them and their welded differentials? The car obviously has plenty of power to keep 'em spinning, but still, think you can keep it sideways from 20 all the way up to 60 mph?

Another time attack event is coming up on July 12. That's not too far away. I'll be there.

The first few drift events that were held here, I took 3rd place in. With an AW11 MR2 with an open diff.

I think I can manage the M3 :P

I'll probably have to replace my Falkens later this year. For the longest time I was considering Kumho XSs, and still am, but Tire Rack's test results of the XS, RE-11, AD08, and Star Spec just came out, and the XS lags in all but cornering Gs, and is noticeably worse than the rest in the wet. I wouldn't doubt it's better than the Falken though, which isn't exactly known as a good wet tire. I could deal with that. If the Star Spec came in my size I'd get it, but for me it's the XS. It'll save me 30 and 32 dollars over the AD08 and RE-11, respectively. Per tire, that is. I'm down with saving $120!

The question is... against what? Given the lead-time for print magazines, some of those competitor tires in the Tirerack test may not have been available yet.

EDIT: Mhmmm... Tirerack test... AD08s gave the quickest laptime... so what's new? ...wish they'd compared it to the RT615s... as that would decide what tire I'm getting at the end of the year...

I will say it is better than the RT-615. The XS was being compared to the RE-O1R's at the end of last year. The RT-615's get greasy way too quickly at autocross even. I've had no such issues on the XS so far. Downside though is the wear bar is showing on two of the tires, the ones that sat on the rear. But 66 autocross runs and a couple thousand miles of driving will do that.

But is the XS quicker than the RT615s over a lap? I've heard that simply cooling the RTs between runs cures some of the overheating.

On the AD07s, on the other hand, which were rated just behind the RTs in terms of pure grip a few years ago, you can go on and on and on and they'll still stick like glue. Treadwear was horrible, but the carcass is amazingly resilient, keeping its integrity over bumps and potholes that have bent some of my wheels.

Personally, if cold performance is the only issue with the AD08s, I'm sold... it never gets colder than 15 degrees Celsius here, anyway.

I refuse to buy the Bridgestone of Yokohama solely because they're not worth what they cost relative to the others.

Sadly Tire Rack doesn't sell Falken. They should because it's very popular. The only thing I can gather is from SCCA forums and whatnot where everyone seems to like the XS better than the RT615.

I don't know... I'm on my third set of AD07s already. Expensive, but absolutely wonderful tires for the occasional mountain thrash.

You've been busy.

I think i've done 10 events this year thus far, and about 55 runs.

I'm on the wear bars on the Azenis, but I'll probably keep running them 'till the cord.
Then I'm thinking Victoracers.

Ran my event on Saturday and won D Stock against a second-gen MR-2 and a more recent Legacy GT. Highlight of the day was after the event when I got 2 fun runs in a Caterham 7.

Does this car make me look fat?

What an absolute ball to drive. Absolute ball.

It's owned by a local dealer and club member. Actually it was a customer car that they just bought back because he could no longer afford it. I don't know what this one was powered by, but it had some oomph. They have an orange one powered by a Zetec 4-cylinder too.

And they're building a real beast - all CF body, sequential trans, probably a supercharged Zetec or some other 4-cylinder. I can't wait to see that though I won't have the nerve to ask for a run in it!

Hey guys, Whats the min. age on these events? I'd love to get into one down in Phili or something but I know nothing about it. I'm not looking to be competitive as I'm only 16, but I think it could really improve my driving abilities. I would think that you'd have to be 18 due to insurance and stuff like that for the event no?

if you want to get your jones on, you can get into Karting or Underbone events, even at your age... and I think the Autocross association also allows younger drivers (some as young as 13...), but to be competitive, you need to have a reasonably competitive car... fully prepped Toyota Starlets can go for as much as 150,000 to 200,000 pesos (about $3,000 - $4,000) and stockers can go for as low as 50,000.

But... this isn't the place to ask those questions... if you are in the Philippines, you want to go down to http://www.autoindustriya.com, as that's where all the local racers hang out.
