...Where the hell is BX when you need him? He did some work or something with the Corvette when it was being developed...

I know that the Z06 and C6-R were developed side-by-side at the same time, and essentially use the same carbon-fiber/aluminum construction, and the differences between the street LS7 and that used in the race car are aparently not as big as what we all think.

Do I know everything there is to know about the cars? Not even close! I'm just restating what I have herd.
BX didn't even work at GM. He was supposed to work there this summer. It was one of his many lies.

About it being called the Sting Ray... I dunno. It sounds a lot weaker than Blue Devil. Oh well, if you can afford a car like this, you can afford to get it in blue, and put a custom Blue Devil badge on the side. :indiff:

How exactly is a 911 S a detuned version of the GT3? The GT3 is just a higher model, no detuning has been involved. I dont understand your guys logic.
The GT3 is built off a Carrera S.
The GT2 is built off a Turbo S.

They're detuned, but by a lot.

But it in not a detuning. They dont make the GT3 and then make it into a lesser version. They start of with the base 911 and build it up from there.

There have only been several cars in the world that have been detuned, either by engine, chassis or both.

In that sense of the word yes, there is no physical detuning going on, but in the sense that they are the same but capable of less, they are detuned. But yeah, I'd agree with looking at it the first way, I don't see them as detuned.

Wrong way. The Carrera S gets built into a GT3. It also explains why the Carrera S gets a Performance package simiar to the GT3.

It is a detune. If it wasn't why not just build the Carrera instead of the S model
?

You have tottally and utterly lost me here! :ill:

the carrera is the base model. The next model up is the carrera S which is basically just more powerful, and then from there comes the GT3, all of which are uprated versions of the base 997.

There's the Carrera, Carrera S, Carrera 4, and Carrera 4S.

Out of these, the 911 GT3 is built upon the 911 Carrera S.
The Carrera 4 and 4S are not chosen because they are Carreras with 4-wheel drive. The GT3 is RWD. This leaves the Carrera S, and Carrera.

Naturally, Porsche chose the Carrera S. In return, the Carrera S is given a GT3 Aero package.

So how does that make the carrera and carrera S detuned? The carrera S doesnt get the full GT3 aero package, but if you want it, it can be done.

The GT3 Package is an option.

It's a detune because the GT3 is built on all its components. Think of it this way. The Carrera S GT3 Package is like GT3, but with a detuned engine, but a near equal interior.

Isn't the GT3 lighter, with a higher revving engine, doesn't it have specific suspension components and aero pieces?

You're saying that a BMW E46 325i is a detuned BMW E46 M3 GTR, because they are based on the same chassis?

You want actual detuning, here it is.

Cayman S, on sale now
Cayman, yet to be released

If the GT3 was sold first, and then they sold cheaper, less powerful, heavier, more plush versions, you could call them detuned, but it's more like the GT3 is a tuned up version of a base 911....oh, another detuned example would be the current 325i, which has a 3.0 Liter engine, just with less tuning/power.

If the tuning up a Carrera S gets you a GT3, then detuning must get you?
Think of it the way live said it.

BTW, wrong 3.
It's the 330Ci that's a "smaller" version of the M3 given you have the Performance Package.

3.2 high revving iron block I-6, M-Differential, unique body work, unique gearbox options, unique interior.

Plus, the M3 came after the 330Ci, and the Performance Package is just a stand in til the next M3...again, the only instance where you can say one model is a detuned version of another currently offered is the Cayman and the Cayman S, or the 330i and 325i.

1. They are NOT detuned, they are base, and the GT whatevers/S/higher versions are tuned. The base Carerra may be a lesser version, but it is by no means detuned. They develop it first and then build faster versions out of that, not they develop the GT2 first and then detune it to make GT3, Carrera S, and Carerra. Otherwise they would have stopped testing the GT2/3/S before the Carerra, not the other way around. A Carerra is NOT a GT2 with the turbo etc removed, the GT2 is the Carerra with upgrades such as suspension, wheels, tires, brakes, turbos, and bodywork.
Does that answer you guys' question?
2. Why are we talking about 911s?

Ugh, you people aren't seeing the point. When you detune a 911 GT3, the next thing below that. I know they made a Carrera S into a GT3.

Let me explain it one more time.
The 911 GT3 is built off a Carrera S. That's the tune up.

Now, say you wanted to, for some stupid reason, to detune a 911 GT3 nowadays, the model would be a Carrera S.

Technically, a 997 GT3 is built off the Carrera 4S Chassis, with a larger fuel tank in the space where the front Differential would normally be.

So no, you cannot possibly detune a 997 GT3 into a Carrera S.

Uh, how? A Carrera 4S features 4wd. A 977 GT3 is RWD.

997 you mean.
No, if you detuned a GT3 it would NOT become a Carerra S, because the body panels would remain different, unless you replaced those too. But why the hell would anyone WANT to detune a GT3?
Anyway, do they even MAKE a 997 4S?

If you took the parts that make a GT3, a GT3, you get a Carrera S Rogue.

I'm speaking in terms of "if."

They've had Carrera 4 and 4S since the 996 generation.
The only Carrera missing is the 997 Targa.

And the 997 Targa is coming soon. Glass-roof.
Anyway, to detune a GT3 to a Carerra S/Carerra would be to take out the turbo, swap the suspension, blast the body panels, and practically rebuild the ride!

It's based on a Carrera 4S, same wide rear arches, but they took the forward driveshaft/differential out.

The more you know.
It's a Carrera S Oni. The 4 has a 4WD drivetrain. The S has a RWD which is EXACTLY what the GT3 has.

The 4S and S are pretty much the same thing, just different drivetrains.

Under the wilder skin, the GT3 benefits from a number of changes compared with the base Carrera and Carrera S.

The GT3 has 13.8-inch-diameter brake rotors front and rear, 0.8 inch bigger than the Carrera S discs.

No, its a Carrera 4S, wider hips and all (which has room up front for the front differential) with a new, larger gas tank (where the front differential would be)

Seriously.

How can it be a based on a 4?

The Carrera 4S and Carrera S are the SAME THING, minus different drivetrains.

The 4S has wider rear wheel arches, and it has a tunnel for the front driveshaft/differential.

A regular Carrera S doesn't have that tunnel.

They used the room opened up by the Differential removal to put a larger gas tank in.

They also used the existing wider rear wheel arches to fit a wider track than the normal 997 Carrera has.

I was gonna do the same thing without distorting the page.

C4S

GT3

Carrera S

The GT3 has the 44 MM wider rear bodywork of the C4S, and uses the extra room taken out of the body by the front differentials removal for a larger fuel tank, I promise.
