Hello,

I wish to officially apply for the crappy car club.

I drive a 1991 BMW 518i. It's the E34 chassis and the M40 engine. 1.8 litre 4 cylinder 8 valve. about 115bhp, and about 1400kg. Both are approximate, as I've seen various figures.

Cons:

So slow it's not even funny. I get outrun by 1 litre 3 cylinder corsas, really I do.
14 years old.
0-60 in 14 seconds.
0-100 in too long to measure.
Sticking hydraulic tappet on cylinder 1, and now a worn cam lobe.
135000 miles.
Smokes a little on startup due to worn valve seals or guides.
Scratched bumpers and rear nearside arch. (Previous owner, I swear)
Exhaust entirely made from weld, I've fixed it 3 times to avoid buying a new one.
Open the bonnet and a huge engine bay has what resembles a sewing machie inside it, they fit 4 litre V8's in there!
Totally terrifying in the wet, sometimes it grips, sometimes it don't. Varies depending on the car's mood.
Does 400 miles on £50 of fuel.
Little bits of missing trim everywhere.
Torn driver's seat.
I wound up the idle to 1100 rpm, otherwise it's erratic, between 500 and 800 and sometimes when I stop it cuts out.
It overheats in traffic, and coolant vanishes without any visible leaks.
It smells when it's hot.
It smells less when it's cold.
Spiders live in the driver side wing mirror, and I cant kill them, cos they hide from the jet washer.

Pros:

Nice Dolphin grey metallic, very desirable colour.
Great chassis, nice balance, good grip and quick steering despite size and weight.
Some idiot bought an M-tec wing for it and debadged it, so it looks a bit posher than a 518. Maybe that's a con.
Almost all the electrics work.
I guess it's good for speeding tickets, I've never had one while owning it, it's just too slow.
Reasonable stereo.

That's everything I can think of. I think I get in cos it's a smoky rattly pile of crap that's worth £200.

So, do I make the grade?

Kurtis.

I would like to join ....

1993 Mazda RX-7
Pros
- It's an RX-7

Cons
- Average 12mpg with gas prices soaring
- If I get on it, something breaks
- Average engine life is 30k miles
- Can't drive hard during summer days (I'm in TX) for fear of overheating
- Previous owner had ****ty maco paint job done before I purchased and is now peeling
- A/C doesn't work (Refer back to hot summer TX days)
- Diff is leaking fluid
- Turbos blew an oil seal as always
- Random boost leak
- Has 160k miles on it

Don't even get me started on my volvo ...

oh yeah baby... my inside door latch just broke so I have to open the door from the outside now... niceeee...

Ouch. :ouch: That sucks...

... but at least you have a car! :dopey:

My "car" is just sitting, leaking air out of the tires and every single possible automotive fluid you can think of (including gasoline)...

PLEASE let me get this Volvo!

:dopey: Yeah, true... actually I thought it might be a great break-in deterant untill I realized I have manual windows and even then they could kindly break them to get out too. Wait?! Volvo?! WTF?! don't you mean Mark VIII??

Ha ha... yeah that reminds me I finally got my VIN# too. :dopey:

I thought you wanted a MK VIII......

I did...

until I test drove a 2005 Saab 9-5 Sportwagon (Aero equivalent) and subsequently a 1996 Volvo 850 Turbo wagon (within my price range... prefer the styling... no Saab 9000 wagons available). 2 test drives in turbocharged cars was enough to convince me that I would miss having a turbo car as a daily driver (the last one being the late (yes, it blew a head gasket and the oil pump failed) 1988 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe. So, for now, no more Mark VIII (I'm surprised you remembered! :dopey: ).

Even if I do end up buying this 850 Turbo, when it comes time to sell, my next car will still have to be turbocharged... ... and the next one... and the next one... and the one after that... and the one after that... :ill:

... and no, I won't turbocharge a Lincoln Mark VIII LSC... not practical. :)

See previous post for explanation. :D

well my car should be running soundly when i get it back either later 2day or 2moro but i just cant bear to be without it.....

since ive had it:

its been stolen and missing for 3 1/2 weeks
another 5 days fixing it up
had to go in for 5 days of bodywork
another 4 days for head gasket/ starter motor
and now 2 or 3 days for the oil tappets

i just cant cope without it..... :guilty:

This has to be the funniest thread on GTPlanet. Reading all of these posts makes me feel not as bad about the problems with my car.

Car: '89 Acura Integra LS 5door

PROS:
-5spd manual
-Light
-26/30 mpg, though that figure has probably dropped
-Nice sounding aftermarket Pioneer radio and CD player with insulated speakers and an amplifier. Not sure if the amp works though.
-Current clutch has lasted me the entire 2 years since my mom bought the car from a yard sale
-No known accidents or collisions
-Power doors and locks with an Alpine alarm system
-Tinted windows

CONS:
-Front wheel drive
-118hp/105 lb-ft, and surely less than that now that the car is one year younger than me.
-310,000 miles
-Hardly any legroom for rear seat passengers
-Burns oil quick
-Leaks oil that sometimes spills onto the front bumper, making the car look like its ****ting from the mouth
-Power steering leak = no power steering which equals VERY hard to steer at low speeds. Quite a pain when trying to park. When I put power steering fluid in it leaks out within a day.
-No freon so no A/C. I can get the heater to blow cool air after I turn it on until the car has warmed up. I have a metal fan that plugs into the cigarette lighter but it is ineffective. Not fun when driving around in 90+ degree Atlanta, GA heat.
-I have windshield wipers that are not the same size as each other. They are not very effective at washing away water either.
-About a month or two ago my car began making a strange humming noise. I think it may be the battery going dead. It sounds awful when the car is at idle and I don't have the radio on.
-Sometimes the car idles at too low of an rpm and nearly stalls.
-The rear driver's side door's lock is chipped off. To open it I have to repatedly lock and unlock the doors and position whats left of the lock in a way that it lines up with the surrounding plastic area. I must then unlock the doors and give the door a certain kind of tug to open it. Only I can open it :) It cannot be opened from the inside.
-Right retractable headlight does not come completely up
-Riding around on Dunlop tires on both fronts and left rear. Right rear tire is some off-brand "High Performance" tire that was on the car when my mom bought it. My mother couldn't afford to get 4 new tires, so I just got 3. To this day I am afraid to have my tires rotated because the lone tire from when the car was purchased is very, very worn.
-One missing hubcap
-The ride quality is very stiff. It is very sensitive to every bump in the road and really hates speedbumps. I regularly scrape speedbumps when I go over them. When I drive over a really nasty bump in the road the radio will cut off for a few seconds.
-No cupholders
-The glove compartment/glove box is hanging down in the open position after the lock on it fell apart. The lock is now in my glove compartment somewhere. As of now I have my radio casing propped up to keep the light from coming on when driving at night.
-At nightime, the windows fog up quickly and easily with all the windows rolled up. The defroster works but at a very slow pace.
-From time to time, my tailpipes come loose and start dragging, which I must put back in place.
-Very bad and plentiful exhaust fumes. The whole backside of the car, especially the tail pipe side, turns black from the exhaust fumes only a few days after being washed. Thise exhaust residue has also spread onto my house's back door (which I park in front of) and the gound in front of it.
-Fuel guage fluctuates, seemingly dependent on how hard I press the gas. One second it can read 3/4 full and 5 seconds later it can read below 1/2.
-From time to time the tachometer jumps wildly
-There is a knock or something in the engine that makes it really struggle below 2500rpms that happened after I put some 20W-50 oil into my car. If I depress the pedal any more than halfway when in 3rd gear or higher, the car bucks violently.
-Excessive brake dust turns the wheels and rims brown within 3 days of washing them.
-Retractable headlights are late to pop up/retract when I press the button. Usually they don't move until 2 seconds later.
-Driver's side door handle is loose and on the verge of breaking off.

Despite all of this, I love my car to death. If I ever do hold a good paying job once I'm finished with school, I'm gonna keep my car and hook it up real nice. So, is my car crappy enough to join the club??

I keep forgetting but... Brian! GET A T5 with those flat 5 spoke stock Volvo rims!!

I can't... the deal didn't go through... :ill:

So I bought a 1988 Volvo 740 Turbo wagon instead. Will post pictures (or something) as soon as I take delivery.

I have my car, finally. However, it's not eligible for the C3 as nothing is wrong with it. :sly:

It's a 1988 Volvo 740 Turbo wagon.

Actually, there is one problem. The previous owner I bought it from started using regular fuel only.

Now...

regular fuel + turbocharged engine + 12 degrees of timing (BTDC of course :sly: ) + high heat + high humidity = ENGINE KNOCK/PRE-IGNITION/PINGING!

Can't wait to be able to fill 'er up with premium. :)

skicrush
Buy a bottle of octane booster.

Most are ineffective... thanks for the tip, though. There is now about 1/3 of tank of fuel left. After work tomorrow I'm going to fill it up with premium. Saturday, I get the A/C recharged, my NYS inspection, "tune up", and various fluid flushes. After that, I should be good for a while. :dopey:

Couldn't you just recharge the A/C yourself? It would be cheaper...

Yeah... it gets bettah... my Plastic Radiator just got a crack in it and has been leaking fluid along with the car heating up faster. And to ad insult to injury, my sis is getting a new tC. :grumpy: I don't care... I'll be getting a new radiator and maybe even an aftermarket exhaust since I guess I'm gonna be keeping it for longer than I thought. :dopey:

edit: Ouch... $480 for new muffler, radiator and labor. :grumpy:

I put forward my Beetle.

Pro's:

- It's mostly seen as cool
- RWD
- Crappy interior, probably a con to most people but I like it bare
- It makes me, and most people that see it smile. Random people wave

Con's:

- It's just about to cost me some money
- Not powerful enough to make decent use of the RWD
- The carb needs jetting, it's overfueling and spitting flames at the moment
- Needs various hoses and new heat exchangers
- Random bits of small rust, dents, scratches

About half of the things wrong with it at the moment, this is just off the top of my head:

NSR Wing damaged
NS Door rusty
Bonnet surround where seal fits rusty
No front indicators
Corrosion on NS A panel
NS Mirror missing
OS Door hinge worn
Dash tatty
No fuel gauge
No horn
OSF Seat not secure
Seat belts do not reel back
No front heaters
No rear heaters
No pipe work for fresh air
Battery not secure
Engine doesn't idle, needs carb adjusted
NSR Tyre illegal
Front brake pads low
OSF Ball joint worn
NSR Wheel bearing worn
OSF Tyre remould

Limo tints on white, cool.

I could go on, but I wont.

Edit: I'll put forward my Calibre too. Pictures speak a thousand words, this demonstrates the ****tyness.
