In my opinion the logic in covering most motorsport events is not just to cater to a wider audience, but because in this way the car physics engine has to be general and sophisticated enough to recreate car physics without making special cases. Including Drag Racing and making event and drag car dynamics properly work would bring benefits to all cars if done correctly (especially regarding burnouts/tire temperature and behavior/gear changes/stand-still launches).

Yeah, which I think the car physics will always lack the effect of being able to 'chirp' tires from one gear to the next. Since it seems as though the track effectively is being rotated instead of the car itself and accelerates. Like when you do a burnout at a stand still, the speedo reads 0 instead of the actual speed of the tires so when you accelerate it cannot break the tires loose from gear to gear unless they're already loose

I don't know one side of me says it will be a surprise and the other side of me says they left it out. We have heard Kaz say in the past that they were including it in the past games before they were finished making it and then it didn't appear. In GT4 it was a joke IMO it should have been done differently.

I think if it was a feature that they would get a lot of positive feedback from then they would've mentioned it at E3 like you said. I honestly don't think it is in because of the past. But with all this talk of acquiring Nascar, WRC, and now Karting maybe they put in a correct drag racing mode to cover almost all motorsport events. I want it.

I'm on the fence about it to. I know drag racing is in though, and if you can't whole heartedly believe that there isn't going to be a drag strip, then I think you should reconsider. It has to be in, not only because it's the easiest track of all time to make, but it's also a thing that has been in, and has been talked about before. But what concerns me is to what length is it in, or how it is implemented. I honestly hope that it's a little more in depth than previous years, and that it's in career mode, but I really doubt it.

I'd rather PD spend more time on creating the famous (for a reason), iconic and historic European race tracks. Regarding drag racing, frankly my dear, I don't give a damn.

Although burnouts and realistic behavior would be nice, I don't find them the most important things. As long as we get one of these drag strips with a functional christmas tree and the ability to red light we can drag race and have fun.

Also, ability to set your "dial in" would be great. This would make it possible to win against a Ferrari Enzo with a Fiat 500. In other words, you would be able to race whichever car you want, instead of choosing the fastest one in order to win.

Not necessary to have it in career mode in my opinion, because some don't like drag racing. As long as we can race each other online we're good. :)

EDIT: If it's in deth there should maybe be a license test though, because I guess quite many don't know exactly how it works.

actualy drag strips make perfect sense. because it allow them to make use of the burnout mechanics..

1600 some odd hours left:dunce:

Wow Santa pod is where most if not all the japanese imports record are broken at. I would love to see a track from the us like Englishtown or Atco it does'nt really matter to me. I hope we get wheelie bars chassis mods parachutes.
Which is why it's so great PD have been looking up Bandimere Speedway. 👍

Beautiful facility + Beautiful surroundings = Me want!

I do hope Bandimere shows up. I'm not into drag racing, but want GT5 to be as diverse as possible.

I can't decide if I want drag racing to be in or not on one hand you've got(in the case of top fuel dragsters) the most powerful race cars ever.
on the other hand the ability of a car to accelerate quickly is not always relative when it comes to running a lap at the nordschleife.

That's what car settings are for. If you want to drag race a Subaru Impreza you set the suspension, gear ratio, tyres and what not to fit a 1/4 mile drag strip. If you want to take the same car for a couple of laps around Nordschleife you set it up that way.

the thing is it depends on the car an impreza good all around car but some of the best muscle car were only good in a straight line.:sly:
That's why I will use muscle cars for drag racing, if it's featured that is. ;)

It's all relative. You can setup any car relatively good for each kind of racing category.

Got bored yesterday so did a little more on the Camaro. Who knows? Maybe some say we'll be able to do things like this in Gran Turismo? Drag tires and wheels, a livery editor and decals is all that is needed. 👍

About the drag racing mode again. If featured, how would you guys like online drag racing to work? I've been thinking, and I think I have an idea or two.

I think it would be great to have a qualifying session, and the easiest and most fair way I think would be to qualify by reaction time. In other words, best reaction time = #1 qualifier. This and ability to set "dial in" would make it possible to win with any car in the game which means we would not be stuck only racing the fastest cars available.

Any questions about how index/dial-in racing works, and I'll be glad try and explain.

this really isn't drag racing but they should create the Bonneville Speedway. Was watching the world's fastest indian the other day and thought would be neat to speed down the salt flats. Pretty easy to recreate but just very long track.

I think different classes of cars would be the best idea. Kinda like how Forza had their career setup..

Something like a 200hp FWD class, and like 400hp and an unlimited class. Or go by the Performance Points. There might be scoreboard cars for each class but it could be really a varying result

It might be a little harder to recreate the salt, though

Would be awesome indeed, but as happycorey mentioned, it might be a little more difficult to recreate than you think.

Or... they could try and get NHRA license and include real classes. They have FWD classes as well, and there are some FWD cars in Stock Eliminator and Super Stock so FWD cars wouldn't be left out.

That's just me fantasising though. I still think index racing would be the simpliest way of implementing drag racing in Gran Turismo. If there will be limitations when it comes to car choice and power the online events will be empty, because I honestly think most of the GT fans are not as fanatic about
drag racing as some of us are. They just want to race their car as it is.

And by the way, since we will be able to set rules for online events I bet we can make our own classes anyway, so it's not something PD has to spend time doing. ;)

I'll be honest Strittan, I'm not into drag racing myself and personally I'm not that bothered if it will be included or not ( but I really hope for you guys and gals who are into it GT5 will feature some ).
But that custom-job you did on the Camaro looks absolutely stunning, well done, and not over the top like some who are against livery-editor, etc. fear it will turn out to be.
Sure there will be truly awful creations as well but if plenty look anywhere near as good as the above picture it'll be worth it.:)👍

Yeah bracket racing is the only way to make it work and be fair to all cars. You could still run an index heads up class, but it is still basically bracket racing, but they would be closer races from start to finish, unlike some bracket racing. I actually like the index classes better because of the side by side racing. You still have the same chance of braking out, sleeping at the tree, missing a shift, etc..., as bracket racing, but it would be much more fun than seeing a Fiat 500 vs a Zonda, and the Zonda having to spot the Fiat 3/4 of the track. That would be like waiting on the start of mission 34 in GT4 LOL :banghead:

My thoughts exactly.

Creating our own classes would be cool. But I honestly don't think drag racing will really ever be big in GT5, despite having a couple drag strips. It would keep the game more diverse, but it's just not the same as a twisty course. I think it's just going to continue to be more and more geared towards normal cars that end up drag racing

Good post. Yes this livery is great on the Camaro.

Dude, thank you so much! Your post is the kindest I've seen in quite some time, so thank you again. I'm doing another one just in this moment, so let's see what you think about that one.

Oh, and on a side note, you knew that Camaro I edited is from GT5, right? Just checking. :)

Yep I know, the Premium one.;)
Good. :)

Just trying to show you guys what can be done and what the possibilities would be with a livery editor. 👍

EDIT: Just a bonus NHRA sportsman video...

Am I the only one who thinks this looks like tons of fun???

If they do include drag mode, what features would be in there? I would want wheelies and the chance to total your car. If they dont release it, can pd make it a downloadable extra?

Wheelies shouldn't have to be a "feature". If the general car physics engine is good enough, they should result as a natural consequence of heavy acceleration and drag tires (in cars powerful enough and with the right drivetrain).

But there are flaws most of the time in the physics system. Like when I get my hands on a RWD car in GT5, I'm going to do the typical burnout test, with the wheels on full lock left or right, and see if the car rotates the opposite way the car is turning. Which would be complete unnatural. If that is going to be the case I don't think wheelies would be possible unless there is enough grip, and low enough tire pressure

I don't quite get your point, mine however was that a realistic physics engine should be general and valid for all cars, and not allow "special cases" or "features" which change driving dynamics (or "rules" and therefore, physics) depending on the selected car.

In other words, given enough power and grip (and rear balance), all RWD (or even certain 4WD) cars should be able to lift their front wheels under heavy acceleration regardless if they are drag cars on a drag strip or not.

I totally agree with you. It's a natural thing given the right amount of grip and power. What's not to be forgotten though, is trackbite. Trackbite is what makes drag racing by today's standards possible in the first place.
