Hp and torque limits for one, in addition to size, tyre and weight limits. gave some races a unique challenge.

Yeah, great idea đź‘Ť

I hate always racing with the fastest car to try to win. I used to race with the car I wanted. I've never won a single race though :P

PS: I'm not talking about GT5P.

In the course maker there's even a configuration for banking angle, which we should set on zero as we don't want any bank on the straight. We could change the start from "rolling start" to "static start" or something, and of course the cars must start side-by-side, too. And our drag race is done! However, I don't think it will be possible to put a division between the competitors. We will need to trust that our opponents will race clean.

We could even change the terrain type and add some banks. Drag on dirt, anyone?
I see what you guys are trying to say about the course creator and all, but it will still lack most of the excitement about drag racing, which is based around the christmas tree. I'm talking about reaction times. Reaction times is the single most important thing about an exciting drag race IMO, and what makes drag racing a sport. Who will leave first and get the advantage, who will have the nerves not to red light, and so on... It would simply add 75% of the experience in my book.

Agreed đź‘Ť, getting off the line properly is majority of the battle. If you don't heat up the tires properly, then this throws off the RPM's that you launch with, where you will then find yourself unmercifully spinning you wheels forever while your opponent leaves you in the dust. A lot of what occurs in drag racing happens before the green lights. A game needs to give you control of the car before the lights change, if it doesn't then it quickly becomes boring, pick the fastest car and win.

I'm not a pro, but do race twice a year with a mustang that Ive dumped a lot of money into to specifically for drag racing (expensive sport), but haven't found a game that quite captures the experience yet. :)

Yeah exactly. I just want to be able to have the ability to actually warm up my tires.. In GT4 me and friends would split screen drag races and warm our tires before the races, but we would still spin a good majority down the track. Having a xmas tree would add so much

Absolutely. Would be cool if we had control of the car after the finish as well, down the shut down area and maybe back to the pit or back directly to the staging lanes.

Well, as a fan of all motorsport I would like to see drag racing included, but as with NASCAR, only if the aspects that make it challenging, interesting and enjoyable are replicated properly also.

You guys obviously know alot more about it than me, but I would guess that car set-up, start line proceedure and shifting are the key points. But other factors such as a track that is never quite the same twice would be good (different levels of grip at different places along and down the track).

How about this for license tests in a future Gran Turismo title?

Knowing PD, it would get simplified to tests for, tire warm up, reaction time, treaction off the line, maintaining control down the track, and combining it all together across different platforms, power outputs etc. Or something of the sort. However should they ever bring in drag racing I think they should have tests for them. They brought drifting in, I'd expect ther to be a license test for that too. Just hope they keep everything seperate. Circuit, drift, rally and drag (if they bring it in) should all have their own licenses. It'd be nice if they included basic tuning for each race discipline in the licenses as well. Hate how GT4 mixed everything up.

You can't forget the Super license. That is a necessity though. But I would really like to see the detailed tire warm up, staging, reaction time, and overall trap speed/time in a license and is something that seems easy enough and likely, but we just don't know how well it's all come together. It would work out great and teach you the fundamentals of how to drag race and do it properly

But there is two sides to it all. Keep it as production car specific or bring in actual drag racing cars. I would like it to be limited to the GT5 roster, excluding actual legitimate drag cars, but it would only satisfy so many people

Sure, leaving out drag cars is fine, as long as the procedure is somewhat realistic. In fact, I think it would be enough having the cars already staged and only having a functional tree and the ability to red light. Burnout and staging would add a lot though.

Yep. I'd like to be able to run 1/4 mile racing. I'd say keep it as simple as possible though.
A proper tree and the options of qualification and dragracing is all GT5 would benefit from. The essentials.
I feel burnouts, staging and mechanical failures related to the sport would be a bit of a stretch for this particular platform. It is better left for a proper dragracing game (simulator), along with bespoke dragracing cars and sporting regulation.
There really ought to be a licenced NHRA-racer or dragracing equivalent to TOCA Racedriver, one were success also relies heavily on mechanical skills.
I remember a streetracing game from the early 90:s were You modified Your car and challenged others outside the local hangout. Simple, but fun, back then.

Yeah, you're right. And drag racing doesn't need to be part of the career mode either, but just something we drag racing fans can do in time trial or online.

I think with tire wear, since it's already in the game properly, would be stupid if they didn't take advantage of staging, doing burnouts to increase the grip, it would help a lot.

If it wasn't apart of career, I think it would be really cool/add a lot more if you could have AI opponents. Racing in GT4 got really boring after awhile

But then it gets more complicated when you're using different tires. If you just want to take a normal car to the strip and run it on N or S tires, then you wouldn't be going in the water box. You'll just spin the tires a little to get some loose debris off, and even then it's not really needed.
All I would want for drag racing, is a tree, red light system. You should also be able to pick whether you want the E.T to be the basis for win or whoever crosses the line first. I know most people who drag race as a hobby don't run a pro tree and the R.T doesn't count for anything so the E.T would be appealing to them. There are also those who like PRO drag racing so they would enjoy a PRO tree and the RT+ET to determine the winner.
Wars and elimination tournaments would also be fun. The CPU would determine which classes or brackets belong to and then cars would be eliminated run by run til there is a winner. I miss drag racing, I don't miss the 2hr drive to the track, the 2hr cool down, the broken axles, the shredded tires.

Yeah, Could simply be an option to compete against AI or just the clock. I prefer online in front of AI though but if no one is online, then yeah, AI would be a good alternative for sure. đź‘Ť

Yeah, like the previous tracks in GT how they had practice, track day, photomode etc.. But Chances are if it's in, it's going to be under Power & Speed like last time

Got bored last night so thought I'd try to make a christmas tree. Not PD level of course, but it came out decent I think.

(Click the thumbnails for full size images)

And yeah, I know NHRA is sponsored by Full Throttle nowadays, but I could only find good pictures of trees from the Powerade era. Maybe I'll change it to Full Throttle later.

can't we just create a 6 mile long straight with the track maker? and obviously if drag racing isn't in it you'd have to make 1/4 mile etc. I'd like drag racing...our own little top gear veyron v mclaren f1 :D

Good job.
I have a question. When you were talking about the Infineon track, can you see the drag strip in the game when going around the track. I would fire up my ps2 but it is at my place at the lake and I can't. If it is viewable on the track do you have a picture?

I remember watching that episode.

It's getting off-topic but: what do you use for modeling?
Zmodeler 1.07. It's often used for making GTA III, Vice City and San andreas mods. I think some rFactor mods are made with it as well. The good thing about it is that it's free and can be downloaded here.

Yes, it is visible. Fired up GT4 and went into photo drive to grab some pictures. Here you go, click them for full size:

Start.

Finish.

The grandstand, which is used both for drag racing events as well as road corse races.

View down the track from the finish.

Man thanks for sharing that I never even noticed it with all the times I played the game. That is freaking crazy, all they need to do is add the tree.
Another interesting thing is the picture of the Nascar, do they race on that track? And I wonder if they started to think about adding nascar before they even made GT4? Maybe they couldn't get the license?

Nice work Strittan. đź‘Ť

Yes,Nascar utilizes this track.

They very well could have had thoughts of it.

Very valid point about the license. đź‘Ť Not sure of which copy, but remember the Mark Martin Valvoline Cup Car ? Could have just been a sign of things to come.

I didnt read all through the thread but i would like to share my thoughts.

Multiple Authentic tracks should be implemented(Infineon Raceway Park, Summit Raceway Park, Indy Raceway Park, Zmax Raceway) Zmax has 4 lanes.
Dragstrips should have more traction than a regular track as in drag racing they prep the track surface with VHT. This is a very stick substance that promotes traction.
Add in the the tire features as well. A drag Radial and a full drag slick should be an upgrade and it should reflect the appearance of the car accordingly to reflect those upgrades. GT4 400m test has more traction and nets better elapsed times than the Las Vegas Strip. This is backwards.
The tracks should run off the actual tree instead of a 3 count. I know GT4 has a Tree but it still starts you off the 3 count. I also think there should be tree options especially for Online. Bracket, Heads up, Pro tree, and sportsman tree.
At the end of the drag race it should show the timeslip as follows so you can see where your mistakes are as well as where the car performs best and tune accordingly.
Reaction Time
60 Foot
330 Foot
1/8th Mile
1/8th MPH
1000 Foot
1/4 Mile
1/4 MPH

It would be cool but not really practical to have actual drag cars like pro stock, funny car, and top fuel. Polyphony usually ramps into features like this like the Nascar thing.
I just want to Drag my cars that are in GT. GT had a few good HKS drag cars in previous games. They could bring them back for this as well as a few similiar cars.

Prolly wouldnt hurt to make a few actual races in the game for drag racing but i would be happy with whats above.

I also know that after a racing game has been out for a while and its been beat people will get bored of it. At this point ALOT of drag racing goes on especially online. If the feature is in there you will please alot of people. If you dont like it then dont use it. No hard done.

I also think they should put a Mile track in to imitate the well known Texas Mile. But thats a different topic.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem drag racing will be included. Maybe in GT6 though, as the news page hints that:

"Many things didn’t make the cut in Gran Turismo 5, and work on Gran Turismo 6 has already begun."

were still 2 months out from the release. There is alot of unconfirmed stuff still. If however you were expecting more than the dragstrip and the 400m machine test then yes it wont be there.

How can you be so sure?

And since when is the 400m machine test drag racing? Unless it uses a functional tree and the ability to red light and test your reaction time, it isn't drag racing.

Because we dont even have a full track or car list yet. This is still a tight lipped thing. Trust me ive seen every GT launch.

the 400m is drag racing just like the las vegas strip was. Both go off a 3 count and work the same. Your definition of Drag Racing isnt fact. A 1/4 Mile is 400m. Thats how it was in all previous GT games.

Thats like saying Going off a spotter or a 3 honk is not drag racing because there is no tree.

Drag Racing be definition: Drag racing is a competition in which vehicles compete to be the first to cross a set finish line, usually from a standing start, and in a straight line.
