Is the game really that bad? I've tossed around the idea of picking it up off of Steam for $40. I'm not a huge F1 fan but I enjoy a racing game and this one at least looks good. I'm not looking for simulation either, if it's real enough I'm ok with it and I'll more then likely be playing it with a 360 controller on my PC.

It's fine. Some people are just nit-picking every possible problem they can find. Some of the problems and annoyances are founded, others are just slightly bordering on "Just shut the hell up and either play the game or sell it."

Does anybody know how to take the last chicane on Catalunya without spinning out? I feel like i loose a second there...

Yeah its tricky, the trick is you have to be content to sacrifice the absolute fastest line for the most consistently fast.

As you crest the hill for the 1st right hander you should be on the brakes and down into 3rd if on fast engine setting and 2nd if you are on standard. If you have braked early enough you should be able to give it some decent throttle at a relatively flat angle so wheelspin shouldn't be an issue. They key coming out is to only give it enough throttle to get to the next gear and is most important to get to the right side of the track for the chicane.

Do your braking and downshifts before you turn-in, I repeat, for this chicane do you braking before your turn-in. You want to be in 2nd after you brake and as you start to turn-in and let the car coast and use engine breaking to hit the apex, be patient. I always run just the edge of my tire over the strips. A very, very short squirt, no gear change, still in 2nd, again let the engine break and decreasing speed help you meet the apex. Do not turn the wheel as those back tires are going over the second strip. I can take a fair amount of curb here as well and then gun it out.

Thats it in a nutshell, it is the most consistently fast technique that minimizes risk during a race. I have raced 50 lap races there with not one incident in that corner. While it might not be the absolute fastest line, the point is that online, literally 90% of the drivers will have some sort of incident so it really turns into risk management and what can you do consistently fast with little risk. Someone will probably tell you drive through the curb and all that, but it will only lead to disaster eventually.

I found this game cheap and decided to buy it despite my previous refusal. I have played some single GP races as I decided to wait for a patch before starting on the career mode. No major bugs seen so far but I am confused about the warning system during races.

Am I right when I think I can get an unlimited number of warnings without peing penalised or black flaged at some point? I have received warnings from cutting of corners and minor collisions. However, it seems that repeated warnings have no conseqeunce or haven't I got enough warnings? I play on the second hardest difficultity if that matters. Don't confuse my question with penalties.

Wait, what?

You're asking for your question to not be confused with penalties but you're asking if it's possible to get an unlimited amount of warnings without any sufficient penalty? Does. Not. Compute. :P

While you clear that up, no, you can't go through an entire race weekend getting nothing but warning after warning without any serious repercussions. If you repeatedly cut corners that will result in an invalidated lap. If you repeatedly cause collisions (whether it's your fault or not) you'll either get a drive through penalty (only during a race event), or a 5 place grid penalty (only during qualifying). Should you choose to ignore your drive through the AI will take control of your vehicle and you'll be disqualified. Take it from me, should you ever get a drive-through penalty, pit on the same lap it was issued.

Don't attempt to use any kind of strategic gain from it because apparently in it's current form the game frowns upon such things. :grumpy:

Just finished qualifying for my first career race, I'm driving for STR on Legend AI difficulty with ABS on and TC on medium(Yes, I know it's not realistic). Wound up 7th(guess all those laps paid off:lol:), much better than Buemi who couldn't even make it out of Q1. Will probably do the race Thursday as I'm doing races 100% length.

Just make sure NOT to pit the first time your engineer calls you in or you'll be very frustrated having to wait for all the other cars to pass you before you can go back to the track. :ouch:

hi all :) i have a question about qualifying if i may...

i have my career set to short weekend because i don't want to go through 3 practice sessions

i was surprised to find that qualifying only had 1 10 minute session and not the 3 parts as irl i was expecting

is this because i've selected short weekend, and do you get the proper 3 qualy sessions in long weekend mode?

thanks up front :D

Yes, you get the three sessions of qualify in the long weekend option. And you can skip the practices if you want to.

My two cents: Not nearly as polished as the other codemasters offerings (Grid, Dirt etc, but same goes even for their older CMcRR games). A bit disappointing, because I was willing to take a bit more in the arcadey-physics department as a trade-off for something that had the level of finish and playability of Grid/Dirt. The menu system is also fairly obtuse, which wasn't the case with their previous games. All that said, I'm sure a lot will get patched out, hopefully soonish.

Smacks of very poor quality control - a lot of the bugs are glaringly obvious. Somewhere between rushing stuff out the door, and the ~6yr GT5 release cycle, is a happy medium...

And you can save and quit in-between sessions as well as speed up the sessions themselves by 6x or 30x.

Awesome......... i've been waiting for one of the guns to arrive and test the boasters out...... but i'm most eagerly waiting for GagTooth from the earlier pages who has apparently won 24 races out of 32 over 1 3/4 seasons and has 2 x WDC's on Expert/Legend with No Aids to take you up on your challenge.....

Now i finished Top 20 in the Academy in Australia also.... but i can tell you there is no way i'm gonna win a WDC in the HRT, let alone a race. Maybe at Bahrain or Catalunya i might be a chance, but thats it..... i'll find out when the season arrives at the 2 circuits in question!
Hey osrg I remember your name from the Prologue leaderboards mate, we were very often very similar on times!

Just so happens, I've had one offering via PM for this challenge and it wasn't even someone who has claimed the game was too easy - it's from a TORC_ member who quite clearly just wants a good race or two...

So as it stands, everyone in this topic, is talking BS about the game being too easy. Glad we cleared that one up :)

I'm enjoying the game, can be frustrating when I'm pushing. Races are fine but quali is full of mistakes for me.

I don't think I'm that slow, I do well in online and I'm getting some tracks really nailed (Especially Montreal). So I think the key is to do lots of mediocre practice laps, then gradually push on each corner.

Yes mate we were! I think you've got the wood on me though well and truely, i got lucky and had a talent surge in the last few days of the academy:crazy:.......

Anyways........ started my season last night @ Bahrain and Melbourne, just 20% races for me on Expert/Legend, No Aids. A 6th place @ Bahrain and 10th @ Melbourne in the HRT i think is out of this world.... having said that i know Bahrain like the back of my hand and Melbourne i know well also, but have a bad tendency to overdrive that circuit.

Kuala Lumpur now...... don't know Sepang real well, but just running TT's at the moment to get my head around the circuit before going to Practice 1.

And practice. I touched someone very lightly in practice twice and got a 5-place grid drop... :grumpy:

Really? Wow, does it automatically apply to the next practice session or qualifying or just a straight grid penalty at the start of the race?

I think the problem is not that the top tier cars are not fast enough or that the AI is too easy it's just that
A) there are no penalties for us pushing too hard
In real life maybe you can push hard too but the risk of damaging such an expensive vehicle or losing spots because of a spin is not worth it.
B) the slower cars are too easy to drive fast

It is quite possible however, that the lower tier cars are boosted up a bit for career mode just so that people jumping into racing or who don't race frequently are not overwhelmed from the start. As we can see in the youtube video posted before there is a decent difference between the car's lap times.

Anyways, I was practicing at Melbourne on Legendary and the AI was posting up times in the dry 1st being at 1'28.xxx, my teammate (Trulli) posting a 1'31.xxx and I was posting a 1'32.5xx.

Then in qualifying, in the rain, the AI posted a fastest time of 1'36.xxx, Trulli did 1'41.xxx and I did a 1'35.xxx.

eh???

I'm going to try to make a video of my finishing the race in pole on Legendary  I did not think I would even qualify above 20th because of the practice times but the rain gave me pole ...

I don't really understand.

Did my first race in the STR @ Bahrain, 50% distance with tire/fuel consumption on, professional AI and no aids.

I qualified 14th but I crashed into someone in practice (locked up going into the first corner) so I was given a 5 grid spot penalty, down to 19th. The race didn't go very well, I missed the braking zone into turn 1 and fell to 24th, I was able to make it back up to 17th as I was on option tires, everyone else was on primes,. I got a speeding penalty coming in for my pit stop, had to do a pass through, went down to 24th again, made it back up to 18th and ran out of fuel on the final lap and finished 21st.

Ok, how the hell do you guys cope with the heavy rain? I'm at Malaysia right now, and it just started raining at the end of the practice session. Went out on the wets as advised and its impossible to find any sort of grip whilst trying to keep myself from sliding off the track.

I may just need to really tone back how fast I'm trying to approach the corners.

Be careful when you're braking too, remember there are no easy to notice indications of tire lockup so you have to get used to how much it takes them to lock in the rain. The best way to learn when the tires lockup is to brake look at the inside of the tire for the Bridgestone logo to see if it's spinning or not.

I find that at lower speeds they lockup easily so you have to be careful.

Are you using any aids?

What quick setup are you using?

For the rain, I'm running abs and medium tcs. I originally switched to the 2nd to last wet setting once it started. The forecast for my race says there will be heavy rain in Q1 &Q2 so I will have it to the next Wet quick setting.

Anyone know what song plays when you speed up time as your sitting in the garage during a session?
Its got the lyrics, 'just stay where you are' and a guy's voice in it, sorry if thats none too descriptive that's all I can put down (even though the songs in my head at the moment lol).
