The moment I picked up my copy, I headed straight into the career with Lotus and was very disappointed when I saw it raining heavily in the opening practice with rain in the forecast for race day... Seriously? Bahrain?

I've had lots of fun with this game. Yes, there are lots of problems, but most can be overcome. It's not unplayable. You just have to tailor it to make it suit your wants/needs. My first experience with a racing game was the Indy 500 sim by Papyrus and just about everything since then.

However, people who claim that tyre punctures are from abusing the car are not 100% correct. Yes, I'm sure punctures occur from abuse, but they're also just happening randomly. I've had an experience where I left pit lane after a puncture and was just babying the car in an attempt to just finish the race and move on to the next round. No spinning of the tires, riding the curbs, or just general aggressive driving. Just trying to bring it home. 3/4's of the way on the outlap with fresh rubber.....3rd puncture of the race.

I thought maybe it was a setup issue that was causing the punctures, but it appears the default setup still produced punctures. I'm not abusing the car and taking it over the rumble strips. Some people swear they have no issues with punctures. Could there possibly be different versions of the game that made it out? That's the only conclusion I can come to. It just doesn't make sense. I run lap after lap after lap in practice and never experience punctures and have very minimal tyre wear. But come race day, it's just one puncture right after another. I think some copies of the game got packaged up and shipped with this bug in it before CM caught it and corrected it.

Who knows... in the mean time, I guess I'm going to give it a try and play with damage off I guess. Oh well, it could be worse. There could be no current F1 console game.

I think in your case your wearing out your tires to the point of destroying the carcase. You only have a limited about of rubber for the weekend 3-4 sets with prime and option depending on track.

If you run too many laps in practice and qualifying you probably wearing down all sets, if you damage a set during race then they have no option but to use a worn out pair.

Try running less laps or keep an eye on your tire condition.

Yeah I am still not getting many punctures, I got a few more but nothing like you guys are describing. I think I got the most bs one though, although it did not impact my race because I just restarted (see below ).

In my Lotus, 17th position in the grid at Malaysia. I'm running on option tires and I do short weekend so they are new rubber. I hear the engines start revving so I get mine up, cars start rolling and I nail it. I make it to about 100km/h and I hear "poof". I got a puncture, at the start of the race! And what is even better? It was my front right tire ... now how the heck did that get a puncture

Could there possibly be different versions of the game that made it out?

No. The puncture bug is related to driving style in most cases, I had two yesterday after pushing hard for 80% of the race on Hard tyres. You have to conserve the car. I was more relaxed at Bahrain and didn't get one. Besides, Australia is hard on the brakes. Second one was on Option in light rain conditions.

I think they need to work on the variables and I'm quite sure there is a random variable for a blow-out, as well as the general wear, so I think they should work on that too.

Thing is, punctures in F1 are very rare, mostly because teams track tyre pressure so well, if this was communicated better in-game I think that would help factors too.

I just purchased the game. Will report back later how it all went. Judging from the latest posts I'm expecting to start a career in a Lotus and get a puncture the very first time I touch the controls !

I started a career when I got the game (even though I dont really like role-playing ..except in sex) anyway, in my third race I got a puncture and then on the last lap there was a spin that lowered my finishing position drastically. It was then that I realized part of the 'live the life' scenario was exactly this kind of seemingly random, but actually quite programmed, misfortune. So thats the moment I exited career mode and have not gone back. Why people would want to experience programmed punishments is a mystery to me. I certainly do not need set-backs and let-downs to make me feel more alive. In life or in a game.

Whenever I get a puncture I just use a flashback to drive that part of the race again and I won't get one.

Installation was a success, started a career but haven't made a profile yet which means I cannot save the game yet. I just think it's weird you cannot save your game without making a profile to play online...

Anyway, my laptop seems to run this game quite smoothly. All settings are set to high, AA is set to 8 by the game itself. I don't know how much of a framerate improvement I'll get by lowering the AA, but the current framerate is more then anough for me. I'm impressed at how good my laptop handles all the games I've thrown at it so far, and that for a model that's not even close to ASUS' high range laptops! 👍

Anyway, this game is awesome fun so far. I decided with all the bugs that I'd stick to arcade racing; no tyre simulation, no damage and no fuel simulation. All the aids were set off except for the ABS and medium traction control. I started a career at Lotus in easy mode and in Bahrain I qualified on pole, 5 seconds ahead of Webber (!)

Yeah, probably might need to set the AI to hard :P

The race engineer's a funny guy, though a bit annoying. He'll inform you about everything as though you were watching an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. When I qualified on pole, he went "You're in first place, right where we expected to be. Nice job!"

Wow, didn't think Lotus expected me to qualfiy on pole

I skimmed through the results when 5 seconds later he went berserk, shouting "A Lotus on pole! A Lotus! Fantastic driving mate!"

!

Finished the race in 40% distance mode in 1st place, lapping the entire field except for the top 4.

Really need to get my hands on the lighting mod. The tint was acceptable at Bahrain, but at Melbourne it's just awful to look at.

Not Done Melbourne yet to see how it is, but just so you know the actual race is held much later in the afternoon In F1 and finishes closer to dusk.

Well, I just won in my Virgin in Montreal, and then finished 6th in Valencia... hmm, very realistic.

Anyway, the good thing I will say is I like Valencia, it's a very good track.

How come I cannot fine-tune my DFP wheel? For some reason I cannot access the force feedback and advanced wheel settings windows.

And how do you set the game back to fullscreen? I alt-tabbed, but it just minimized it. I can't find the option to set it to fullscreen either in the graphics window.

Thanks 👍

I fixed the DFP issue. I just had to set it to the DFP profile. All force feedback options set to 100, and it's a huge difference. Much heavier wheel, more life in it and I can finally feel the surface.

I also successfully installed the realistic sunlight mod. Awesome stuff!

Everyone should just set the game to legendary AI and have done with it, then you won't be winning the races and you really have to practice hard to get the results. Otherwise you're always going to find it too easy....

Yeah, I think they just need to refine their algorithm a little more. They seem to have made a pretty tricky tire model with a lot of things implemented and just have a few things they need to work out.

Another problem I think that a lot of people are having is that they just do not realize how much strain they are putting on their tires. It's really easy to lock your brakes up and also very easy to get wheelspin out of a corner, it is just that you get no feedback that these things are occurring. If you look behind you sometimes when accelerating away from a turn at full-throttle in low gear you will see the smoke and tire marks but won't feel or hear a thing.

You've raised a good point there on the FFB, I've just about trained myself to now recognise locking brakes and spinning wheels through hearing than feeling it through the wheel in F1 2010. It's not a major issue, once you settle in to it, it's fine.

Trail braking is essential in this game to not lock up the brakes/destroy tyres in slow corners. Some may be more used to doing that than others, but it's not a technique you have to use in all racers. But still, I don't think the game should be driving people away with how hard it can be on tyres. Yes, make it realistic, but sensible realistic, none of us would ever be able to drive an F1 car properly, but we want to think we can!

Balance is a tremendous thing within computer games.

I did, they're still too easy. Ok, so I had medium traction control and ABS on. But they were still too easy.

I just finished my Bahrain race and enjoyed it a lot. Sounds and AI have to be this game's strongest points. I love hearing the flames in the exhaust when you downshift 👍

I started in 6th position, and overtook Kubica for 5th after a 6-7 lap battle. Then I harassed Alonso, but pitted in before I made a move. I rejoined the race in 9th behind Petrov and suffered a puncture. Back into 24th, but I fought my way back. There was one spot in which all of the AI cars had the exact same off moment which lead me to an easy overtaking maneuver.

Here's the thing though: I crossed the finish line in 9th right behind Button and Koba on my tail in 10th. Webber lead the entire race and won it, but when the results screen came up it showed Di Grassi finishing in 8th, with Button winning the race. lolwut?

Please don't tell me the results are randomized...

Doesn't make sense. I was driving 50% race distance, and when I see Button finishing in front of me and even my race engineer confirms it and every single widget on the screen confirms Webber in 1st by at least half a lap, how can Button be in 1st? :dunce:

If you're racing with a wheel you should turn TC and ABS off. IMO it's much more challenging and interesting.

The AI does have their weak points where you can pass a few easily but overall they're pretty tough. I hate Barichello because I have to fight so hard to get the position from him and we usually have a few bumps

BTW you don't need to create an online profile to save. You can create an offline profile in Games 4 Windows.

As for that bug I have not experienced it yet so I'm not really sure. According to CM the lap times are not randomly generated it is just the first lap that is not properly tracked because of the start/finish line.

Yeah I read about that one, but it doesn't explain Button's and Di Grassi's finishing position.

You are right about Barrichello, though. He really is harder to pass then some of the other drivers. I especially like how they anticipate to some of your moves and close the door on you. I don't like, however, when they shut the door on you and you get blamed with a warning :grumpy:

Why do some some cars suddenly reduce speed considerably? I did a 100% race on Hockenheim yesterday where I overtook two cars which were driving at reduced speed all of a sudden. They were not blue flagged as I was on the same lap as them. I had been chasing them for several laps and then that happened without warning or explanation. A bug?

My above post, was driving on Legendary.

I would love to see some proof as its impossible if its your first season. Although, I haven't yet reached those races so I don't know whether the AI takes some of the corners too slowly like some other tracks?
Even so, just on the straights alone the AI should be far ahead. For example, at Malaysia you would never be able to win the race, the AI are just far too quick for the new teams to win.

Did Bahrain today in a Lotus. Legendary difficulty, 30% distance. Qualified 21st, finished 20th (took out Trulli after a spin :D), only just holding off De La Rosa. Odd thing is that Buemi was 3rd and Hamilton 19th! Did part of Australian too, Qualifying 19th, will do the race at some point. Has anyone else noticed how slow the AI can be in the wet? (Either that or I kick ass in the wet :D)

Strange! I did Bahrain with exactly these settings (Lotus, Legendary, 30%). At the end of my race, I was last but Petrov and Kubica were first and second with some of the big runners such as Webber, Hamilton and Massa back in positions 10th - 20th. However, Melbourne seemed to be a more realistic result with the expected drivers in their respective positions.

Quite right. Lengendary AI, all aids off (traction control, braking assist and ABS), fuel and tyre simulation on, and full damage on. I'm finding it very challenging but good fun. Can't see how people will get the bottom three teams battling in the top 10 with these settings... or maybe I just suck. Perhaps with the wheel it's easier. I'm using a Sixaxis.
