The Pole lap is brilliant, not because it's fastest but because it was a lesson in how to deal with double waved yellows and traffic and still keep going.

So Q1 Nico got lucky, Q2 Lewis got lucky and Q3 Nico gets his luck back.

Exactly he utilized a better position than the three challengers he had to worry about.

At first I thought Lewis has done well there being at the front as he has less chance of running into a yellow flag. Irony there.

Well DR ran a personal best first sector, and Lewis ran the best first sector of the session, so it stands to reason those two had a chance, but luck wasn't on their side.

Dan was driver of the day for me, Tomorrow should be fun with Dan and Max close enough to mount a fight.

There were double waved yellows, but he backed off.

I've not seen the lap since C4 cut straight off but it Seems unlikely given his first sector was nothing special, a backed off second sector would have left only S3 to make up the time. Probably more likely the yellows were gone just at the right moment for him but as I say I've not seen the lap so I'm just guessing and obviously a moot point if it's been shown there was and he did.

He went purple in sector 2

He had them waved for one corner he did lift there, it's a combination of both, he did lift in the corner and the flags were gone before he reached another corner IIRC.

What is the rule anyway? Croft said you only have to lift, some were saying you can't get a purple sector, I'm only going on based on Brundle's word that his minor lift is enough.

That's pretty much how it played out. He backed off, and then realised that the track was clear.

The on-board from Hamilton showed two yellow flags, one on the entry to Turn 8 and another on the approach to Turn 9. It's probably because a whole lot of the sector is unsighted. The Turn 8 board was yellow for Rosberg, but the Turn 9 board was clear.

You just have to back off in the two hundred metre timing loop. In theory, you could back off and still set a purple sector time if there's a high degree of track evolution.

Yellow were on both corner for Rosberg too, you could see it clearly on Sky. But I do think it's too close to be called he lift enough for me and saw no danger or flag at exit so he went on.

Well done to Nico. He certainly seized the opportunity at the right moment. Should be an interesting race tomorrow.

Well it seems Horner is going to instigate at least a casual look into it, if not a formal investigation.

Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner says he wants stewards to check that Nico Rosberg lifted for double-waved yellow flags on his pole position lap.

EDIT

"For sure, there were double-waved yellows, but I had a very, very big lift," Rosberg insisted in the post-qualifying press conference,

"Lost a lot of time as a result and, also slower than on my previous lap in that yellow segment, so I am sure it will be okay."

If that is true then he should be fine. As PM says it's only the small segment with the yellow he has to demonstrate slowing down on, not the whole sector.
