Formula 1 to award double points for the final race.

Why is double-points such a bad idea?

If it is as much of a bad idea as everyone is saying then my worry turns to talent like Lucas Auer, Raffaele Marciello, Cameron Twynham, Stoffel Vandoorne and Pietro Fantin. The emerging talent in series like FR 3.5, F3 and GP2. They are going to need another string to their bow and not just focus on driving in F1 because (and I am not saying it will happen but I am saying some might be of that inclination), if they are willing to abandon plans to race in F1 in protest of this new ridiculous and pointless rule then where can they go if they are so focussed on a career in single-seater? They may have to do AutoGP or IndyCar or something. But if they are so focussed on F1 then they will have nowhere to go really to make it big. They will need to do what Raffaele can do and do another form of racing like the DTM.

The same ridiculous, over the top responses here as in every other F1 forum. How is this a worse idea than, say, dropping the points from a driver's worst five races, the system that in 1988 gave Senna the title over Prost?

Edit: Some response was inevitable after every team save Red Bull blatantly tanked the second half of the 2013 season.

The responses are perfectly justified in my opinion, there's an odious little troll trying to bring yet more gimmicks into this sport when the vast majority of [soon to be ex-]fans want the sport to be more like it used to be. This is over the top:

unless you get me drunk then mention Bernie Ecclestone. Life doesn't bleep. :D

Seems the teams have rejected the mandatory pit stops, at least they have some sense.

That is the day F1 will go straight to hell where NASCAR already resides.

So does this mean your going to post how your done with F1 in F1 threads every week now?

Honestly, why not just have Austin be the last race of the year, it's much better then Abu Dahbi.
Also, I half expect the championship to be decided by blue shell.

I don't know what's worse, the double points or only just finding out Abu Dhabi is the last race of the season again. Why has it gone back to Abu Dhabi?
I think there's supposed to be a young drivers test there a few days after the race.

Okay, hyperbole aside, awarding double points would be a good idea if the driver's championship was close; look at 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012. All of them came down to the last race, and what I assume the FIA/Bernie/@xX-RandomF1Yahoo-Xx wants is a final race which isn't decided by a points front-runner trundling around in eighth place, so he can clinch a title by a whisker. It wouldn't be the most absurd idea, although only one of them (2003) involved driving in such a manner. Also, so that the sixty-seven or so folks that actually care about the Constructor's trophy also can't accuse Ferrari / Red Bull / LotusCapitalGroupStockBrokerMarchBenettonGeniiEnstone of mailing it in. Still, why minimize the impact of the other 18 races on the calendar?

I only approve of one double-points race; Spa-Francorchamps, run with twice the laps. No exceptions, rain or shine.

As for the numbers - since it doesn't matter for squat anyhow; but do the teams own it, or do the drivers' posses it while they're active? The numbers on F1 cars mean next to nothing; the team logos are almost larger, so we might as well go back to when the race organizers handed out numbers based on the order of the entry lists. I'd like to see the German GP organizers hand out some triple-digits again just because they could.

Good luck with that spending cap, guys. Do the catering departments have to save all their receipts for those supermarket trips? Are they only permitted a maximum of two grocery stops per week, with one at the local butcher and a mandatory cart-pushing session at the grocer in the next town over? Also, no refueling along the way.

Surely the double points race should be Monaco. The whole calendar is organised around said race, it attacts so much money, it is the jewel in F1's crown and the one race (apart from their home GP) that drivers want to win.

More rule changes

They should also add 1 point for pole.

Which would throw an extra 18 points into the mix.

Extra CC points for the team that uses the least engine and trannys.

Or fastest lap. It could mean that people in the lower teams could swap a low placing for a new set of options and try and set fastest lap with 3 laps to go.

So now that I have a chance to somewhat read the stuff, I wasn't too surprised more so asking myself do they really want fans to stop watching? The FOM has some say I think in matter of the FIA, hell they have an influence on who gets to be president of the FIA after all :sly:

I feel the FOM is equally alright with this because it will draw people in, I think it's a stupid rule and I think the only decent rule I've seen in the driver selected numbers.

Everything from the stupid noses next year to this last chance effort is stupid, points should be linear and this gimmick is just that.

Because Bernie needs funds to build his supervillain fortress in the Indian Ocean.

It will also have a death laser that Todt can fire at countries that don't endorse Road Safety.

Even funnier, in one sweep they made F1 in general a bigger gimmick, but just made one of the most unwatched races (next to Bahrain) potentially the most watched in one action. Thus not only does Abu Dhabi get watched with much angst, yet much excitement due to a potential from behind last race WDC or WCC victory. As if they haven't already happened in the last few years without this joke.

Abu Dhabi 2012 was actually a great race.

If it was double points for Brazil... hell... even triple points... I doubt anybody would complain. :D

I know I wouldn't.

I like this idea! How does everyone hate it? I don't get why?

I personally hate it because someone can go into the last race with a 49 point lead and end up losing the championship if they happen to finish outside the points. That scenario seems like the only situation this would actually make a difference in the championship as if all the drivers in the hunt finish in points it will be no different than the current system.
