Formula 1 to award double points for the final race.

I've always missed Eddie Irvine in F1, even if only for his quotes.

Wow, has it really been twenty years since he and Ayrton Senna tussled in the paddock after the race? Yes, it has.

They need to award points back to 33rd place, but only if all the curbs are made of Crisco.

It's been suggested that the teams were facing pressure from broadcasters to find a way to make the championship fight last longer, which is how we got double points in Abu Dhabi.

The final 3 races having double points would actually be better, but still hilarious.

One point per position. 22 starters? 22 for win 21 for 2nd and so on until 1 point for last. No point for disqualification. No bonus points.

The driver with the most points has the highest average finishing position, The championship is nearly guaranteed to go to the last round.

Not the best solution, you can win loads of races and still lose the championship, but at least it's consistent, not one race is worth X and next Y.

The reason for increasingly more points as you get higher up the places was to encourage overtaking, I believe. If you're in second, there's a lot more incentive to push for first when there's 7 extra points on the line rather than one.

Whether that's required or not with DRS/KERS is another thing, and racing drivers would naturally try and go for a pass if it was there. But I suspect you'd start to see strategically aborted passes. In the last phase of the race, people would likely just hold station rather than risk their points unless they were seriously out of position.

And then thinking about it, I think we've missed the genius of this business model, I'm sure Bernie realized that other GP organizers wouldn't go for this. Furthermore, with this knowledge he probably could raise the overhead on groups and have them pay more to be that final race of the season. The GP organizers will obviously pay because they know others will come to see a double points race where second third maybe even fourth or fifth have the ability to win the WDC or WCC in the final round. Though this isn't guaranteed, obviously owners are still going to feel left out and not as important as the final one so it not being a guarantee in that regard wont matter.

Why not take away all rear wings in the last race also to "spice it up for the fans". Old farts @ FIA don't realize manufacturer dominance will stay a F1 trademark no matter how many Mickey Mouse rules you implement...
