Gran Turismo 7 takes center stage in an all-new State of Play, arriving Wednesday at 2pm Pacific:

I think the odd campaign structure was decided on because of future DLC. Now they can probably add tracks post-release and make it look like they were part of the campaign all along, unlike GT Sport where new tracks were simply slapped onto the end of existing events like some late arrival. Just a thought, but not one I particularly like.

Master car list seems to have missed the Honda Civic (FK2) Type R. I remembered spotting it in the State of play vid.

We have more than a few new members and returning members who seem to have forgotten the AUP they agreed to when they joined.

In particular this part:

  • You will not behave in an abusive and/or hateful manner, and will not harass, threaten, nor attack any individual or any group.

That means if you are referring to people as fanboys, haters, etc. you are ignoring the AUP.

Argue the point people, don't attack the person

Posts of this nature have been removed from view. Those continuing to do so will see moderation action taken.
Amusingly, GTPlanet gets accused of being anti-GT just about as often as we get called a "GT fansite". Which broadly means we're doing it right, because neither's true.

You'll find as many people who are insanely overly positive about it as there are people who are insanely overly negative about it. More often than that though is people who express mildly positive opinions being portrayed as overly positive by the overly negative, and people who expess mildly negative opinions being portrayed as overly negative by the overly positive.

The simple fact is GTPlanet allows all points of view, so long as they're expressed within the relatively simple bounds of the AUP - which amounts to not insulting or abusing other people while doing so (as well as doing it in English, and not swearing).

An "echo chamber", as recently floated, is a place in which one point of view is overly promoted by those in charge, resulting in that point of view echoing around as it's expressed and reinforced. Expressing your opinion and having a bunch of people say they don't agree with you isn't an echo chamber, it's an exchange of ideas, thoughts, and opinions. Or, dare I say it, a discussion!

Those who can't handle having their opinion challenged are probably not best-suited to giving it in an environment like GTPlanet which foments discussion. Though that doesn't really stop them from doing it and crying foul (or "fanboy" or "hater") when it's discussed.

I don't quite get who is so emotionally invested in companies either way that any negativity is "hating" or any positivity is "fanboyism" - and bearing in mind my actual livelihood rests on these games, so I'm more invested than most - but it is so, so weird.

Although not as weird as the idea Reddit is ever positive about anything.

1st place in every event once, with no clean race bonus or car handicap bonus gets you 28,785,500 Cr.
Just in GT League? No one-timers like Mission Challenge/Circuit Experience/Licence Tests? Surprising.

Master Car List hasn't been updated since the day before SOP, because guy who does it been busy with SOP, then GTP's articles, then sleeping because SOP landed at 10pm in his timezone.

Great summaries. That covers most of the stuff I was going to say, just to add a few of mine:

  • Not a fan of inflating the price of old JDM cars. IRL it's because these cars are rare, but in game there are no limits on quantity. It's just more grinding to do.
  • They still haven't explained if UCD refresh every in-game day, or every actual real life day.
  • Brand central looks lifted straight off GTS.
  • Drag racing looks very bare bones. No burnout/tire temp prep and no staging. It's like having F1 race without pitstops or NASCAR without drafting. What's the point?
  • Still no tune sharing. Kaz explained it's because you may have different parts installed - then just include the parts list in the shared data as well!
  • Still no 24h or rain on all tracks.
  • Music replay/rally - if this is the best new feature they can come up with, well, I've got nothing to say. It's basically Sierra Time Rally with music. Real creative PD.
  • Still don't know if replay controls are improved (e.g. slow mo, fast forward instead of skip by 10 seconds).
  • Career mode, AI, car sounds, damage and physics looks much the same (meanwhile they spent ages talking about weather/stars simulation - and Driveclub still does it better).
  • Lots of talk about PS5 Dualshock, but not steering wheel improvements (didn't even namedrop Fanatec GT DD Pro).
  • No talk about Sport Mode, whether FIA championships return, improvements in DR/SR (will they carry over?), penalties and points system.
  • No mention of detailed telemetry like GT6.
  • No course generator/creator :(
  • HUD still looks non-customizable.

Now moving on to the good:
  • Rain radar and the wetness indicator seems to be instantaneous (i.e. based on the part of the track you're driving and not whole track average).
  • Puddles and drying line (though if the wet physics are still bad, there's no point).
  • More Manufacturer paint chips! No need to find the RGB to get exact shade anymore  The question is whether we have to buy the chips with the cars (like GT5-6) or buy them separately (like GTS in MiEx).
  • More bodykits and rims (though it remains to be seen whether this applies to all cars. and they are still generic PD designs instead of branded kits).
  • More detail in tuning screen (e.g. 0-60, lateral g), but I would've liked for Machine Test to return as well. Also they still haven't showed what are the Extreme tuning options (engine swap???)
  • Livery import from GTS 👍👍👍 But no word on whether Search function is improved.
  • Graphics & scapes gorgeous as usual. Was hoping heat haze effect in replay returns from GT3 though.
  • Museum is still there, and GT Cafe looks to build on this.
  • Updates (hopefully free) planned. More guessing car silhouettes from Kaz
  • No release date delay :D

So yeah, my expectations of GT Sport V2.0 with home screen and upgrades from previous games are on point basically. Music rally is a non-event. Most looking forward to figuring out how the weather radar works. Now just waiting for the full car/track list and we're good for 4/3/2022 :) 👍
RE: JDM cars, I think it kinda makes sense because although the quantity seems "uncapped", it helps make them feel more special to people who might not understand the significance/importance of those cars.

Also this was a "skim the surface" type look, so don't be surprised if those increased value JDM cars are RNG-cycled to make them appear rarely in the used dealership like they did with some cars in previous GT games.

The screenshot is 20x20, so 400 cars in the shot. Still some omissions :)

I actually spotted what looks like aquaplaning in one of the B-Roll footage. I uploaded a short clip:

The car twitches after driving through a puddle at high speed.

Niiceee. This gives me hope they glanced over other important things like the rest of the physics, AI and even tyre temperature. How Kaz, 5min dedicated to music rally and replay and no single 2 second mention of actual relevant stuff like aquaplaning

I was only interested in learning more about Split Screen and Local multiplayer. Was very underwhelmed with what they showed.

I hope there is more to it, like actual racing with ai cars during split screen. Otherwise this is a sale purchase.

Oof... I am honestly happy for all you people who are happy with what they saw. Nice to see in a way that the same old, same old GT for the 7th time still will give people enjoyment.

I, for one, am totally turned off now. All this fluff they showed is surely well made but useless for me when added around a game which still has the exact same gameplay that was outdated 20 years ago. All this stupid chase the rabbit stuff against braindead AI just as it was in the PS2 era just ain't racing and it just doesn't cut it for me anymore in the slightest. I am bored to death watching the gameplay portions of the videos, sorry. Wait, thats not true. The music rally thing had me pissing my pants laughing. Surely he can not be serious, that is so embarassing, it almost hurts in a way.

Overall, if Kaz would be consequent, GT8 would be a game where all you do is look at cars. The racing part feels like a nuisance to him at this point. It is such a shame, since he actually participated in real races, he knows damn well how exciting and visceral racing feels. Why he refuses to bring this to GT is totally puzzling to me, but it is what it is. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Until Kaz’s design leadership remains GT will never be a proper competitive racer.

For all we know you could 100% speed run this game in 5 days, given that literally all they said about career mode was that it was similar to previous games.
If the prices in the Video was anything to go by, 120 hours of grinding wouldn't be enough and that would be before you got GOLD in every event.

I thought the game looked very good, looks ready for release and polished to within an inch of its life and given the current climate of gaming in general that's a lot to be thankful for. What we're going to get out of the box is likely to be an oustanding product and I am looking forward to it.

However, I can't pretend I'm not disappointed that online racing appears to have been an afterthought and we look to be stuck at GT Sport with no significant advancements to talk about in a last minute reveal. "Players can compete against others from around the world" is literally the extent of the online content in last nights media briefing...

GT Sport was not a backwards step, it was ahead of the curve in many ways, and it's disappointing that PD have caved to the single player complaints and focused this game entirely around their experience instead of pushing forward with further advancements in online play, which is the future of racing games and of gaming in general.

Congratulations to those whom the game is made for, I'm sure I'll have fun with it as well, but I really hope for them still pulling something out of the hat when it comes to online play, otherwise my interest in the game may wane quicker than I'd like.

Wow! The presentation last night was really nice and I had a thought back at the time when I would have bought this instantly on release day. Aawwwwhhh man...
I’m really glad for all the GT fans out there with this next GT coming in March. A lot of good stuff in it!!
Personally, I just can’t go back after I have experienced sim racing on PC. Even when I value a lot of stuff shown last night, I don’t need those role-playing game aspects and/or collecting credits and cars and such anymore. The driving itself, the learning curve involved, is challenging and rewarding enough for me. 😍
All you guys enjoy this game as much as I enjoy my sims!!

This is what I just don’t understand, and it’s not just you… why do people say GT is not a proper racer, or GT is not about racing? GTS in my opinion focus on more of the racing aspect of GT and I think they did a pretty damn good job, is it as hardcore as ACC, not at all but it stills holds its own and when it comes to racing on a console I still think GT is still the best. I race with about 30 people on GTP, Porsche cup, GT4 series, and a multiclass gr.1/gr.3 and the racing is crazy intense and fun. I feel like people are upset with the offline mode, and they have a right to if it’s not up to your standards, but to say GT is not proper competitive racer come on!!!!

There's also still an odd vibe. It seems very focused on aspects of car culture that feel kind of elitist, for want of a better word. It would seem a little mean to call it Gran Turismo 7: The Car Hipster Simulator but that's the way it feels to me. It's something different from what a lot of other games have that tend to be either "super serious motorsport" or "The Fast and the Furious", but it's not something that clicks with me. I still think there's room for a game to do the Best Motoring/Top Gear vibe better. Historically Gran Turismo seemed to be the closest thing to that, but I think they're steering away into this Jay Leno/Jay Kay/Chris Evans ultimate car collector simulator.
To be fair, PD would be crazy to mess with their winning 'car museum' formula now, which so many people identify and love the series for. But personally, I do agree it's not the be and all of how to present motorsport, at least not as a whole. I much prefer PC 2's presentation, those samples and voice-overs go along way for me. I also appreciated the video clips that were part of Dirt 2's historic mode. (I'd love to see more of this in games and not just sterile voice-overs or text.) I also loved the clips in Sébastien Loeb Rally, the dubbing really made it like a european TV documentary lol. And of course FM4's intro.

Looks more to me that the online part will build upon what GTS had. There's still sport mode, and I doubt there will be major changes to lobbies.

If anything, the single player content seems lackluster.

What I feel is that they have built a very solid foundation of a game, they are just lacking in the actual 'game' part of it.

A full career mode is not rocket science to build. It's mainly a matter of tying together some menu screens and configuring events. All I would want from it is to have a championship mode, which has a load of championships to choose from in varying classes and with varying track lists.
Selecting a track and having a handful of events available there is just not much of a single player mode. They say 100+ events, but even GTS had more than that I'm pretty sure.

And AI is still just sub-par.

Call me a grumpy middle aged man, but this SOP was disappointing. No really interesting cars, besides the CSL. This is going to be a very boring car list. At this point the vast majority is either a coupe or a race car, and most of them are both. If PD wants me to have fun collecting cars, they should implement cars that are appealing to collect and not just the cars 'that you want because he has one'.

I thought they were going to talk about how much the AI has improved but instead they talk about music rally and music replay? When I saw that I felt a slight irritation running over my spine, remembering some of the most annoying parts in GT history...

I think they probably felt there wasn't much need to go into detail with it. The Sport mode is probably a like-for-like with what we have with GT Sport encompassed in GT 7. The title on the race lobby screen said Daily Race, so at least we know that's one aspect that will return. They made a huge development with the online and there's no way they'd just abandon it. Even the current bunch of races in GT Sport is called Road to GT7.

If anything, I doubt it was an afterthought at all. They look to be keeping the online aspects, but including the campaign mode that the die hard Gran Turismo series fans have been calling out for. It should be a win win for everyone.

Having been a Gran Turismo fan since GT1 (I was around 30 years old back then) I have to say I’m hugely disappointed.

For me Gran Turismo has always been the journey through the vast career mode. This was absent in GT Sport until GT League came along.

I had hoped and believed that GT7 would offer the largest deepest career ever. Instead it’s restricted to 100 races and limited to selecting a track and picking out a couple of races tied to that track. Absolutely pitiful.

I’ll still get it. It is what it is. But my excitement has been completely and utterly destroyed. I’ll have to approach the game in a different way and just create my own events. That fails to give me the progression I crave.

Flame me all you wish for my opinion. It is valid and just. Everyone is entitled to one. I just hope there are enough improvements in Custom Race to give me at least a little pleasure.
Yeah, I’m not a big fan of how the career is designed in GT7 and it’s probably the thing that disappoints me the most from this event. It looks like a step back from just having the career structured with different categories (Beginner, Professional, Endurance, etc.) like in previous games.

By how GT Cafe was described prior to this preview, I always thought that it was just a optional side mode that is geared more towards people who may be new to cars, but it really does look like that it is the major part of the career mode itself and you will have to do it to unlock more events.

My excitement for the game is still intact though and I’m very much looking forward to playing it. But it seems like once again, Sport mode will be where I’ll be getting most of my replay value at the end of the day.

Graphics and sounds seem more of a enhanced GT Sport. On the graphics this isn't a bad thing neccessarily but i expected more from the sounds.

I will keep my judgement for the AI, the physics and the career mode for the actual release.

As is typical, the fan base and dedicated forum are rife with negativity and people being overly dramatic. I don't know why people keep expecting a *console racing simulator to turn into or have features from a full fledged hardcore sim like Assetto or R Factor. Expectations need to be tailored and Gran Turismo was never meant to be like those other games and never will be. It's one of the best console racing sims out and is pretty much in it's own lane as far as detail and presentation goes. The game definitely looks good for what it is and as a car enthusiast, I'm just glad there's another mainline GT game coming soon.

People should stop complaining about weird stuff in GT .

You don't know what's going to popular. PD/SONY doesn't even know what's going to be popular.

They'll add some extra thing like Music Rally where the music fits your custom livery, and suddenly people will go nuts.

I mean, it looks like they've finally put together the game they should have put together in 2013. Time will tell whether most of this stuff is just set dressing/new menus on top of the same old game; and time will tell whether the stuff underneath the game is actually any better. At the very least they aren't promising the moon but it will only eventually show up in the game at some point after launch; which is progress over their previous decade of output.

Enjoyed the presentation. Looked to be an improvement over GTS. Some intriguing new features but will reserve judgement until I get to play it. However, in many areas the game is still stuck in the past. So many racing games do things better and GT has not moved with the times.

In the past two weeks I've managed to secure a PS5 and GT DD Pro and I know I'll be excited to boot the game up for the first time.

Yeah some people here are shocked that GT7 didn't turn into the new ACC or iRacing all of a sudden. The point of GT is that it's different from other games, it has it's own identity, making it like any other game would make the series lose its appeal.

That's why i love playing ACC as well because it offers me an authentic racing experience that GT can't necessarily provide offline.

There's no need to play just one franchise, there's more choice when it comes to racing games now more than ever.
