Why the FIA choose Gran Turismo?
It's the biggest name in computer racing games with the biggest sales hence the best marketing opportunity for them to reach a huge player base at a time when they are struggling to attract a certain demographic to their events.

Then the FIA is not worry about fantasy.

Still amazes me people still haven't heeded keeping expectations low when it comes to GT (GT5 alone should've been a massive lesson).

I know Kaz has said this and said that, but the picture keeps looking so familiar each time yet people still haven't taken the hint. I just don't get it.

For those disappointed with this new direction, sorry its really put you off (And I really do mean that). I'll see you guys on PCARS2 then (assuming PS Plus materializes in time for me).

Admittingly I do like having the option of doing stuff offline and online (for instance, I hate how SF5 basically forces you when you first start the game to have an Online name when you might not have any interest at all in it whereas I love how Tekken 7 doesn't make you do that from the start and its there as an option) so as much as I was aware of this being E-Sports focused title, I am rather bummed that Offline is more or less solely made to point you straight to online. Basically once the license central is done, I can only play it properly by going online (which is NOT always what I want to do). I'm still getting it obviously because finally I can put to rest the idea of getting another console (or giving money to EA) just to be able to make custom cars.

Then the FIA in not worry about fantasy.

In the same way that Hollywood doesn't care how good anything made is, "Its about getting people in the seats". Also its the FIA, is that really a surprise?

Do you run in fantasy tracks?

So many folks here are disappointed about the diminished offline modes.

To add some balance to the feels,
I have to say that the only offline thing I care about, if any, is possibly testing and tuning in preparation for Online Multiplayer Racing.

The campaign career mode, drivers' school, challenges, and photoscape modes, all hold absolutely zero of my interest.
In my eyes, it's a shame to waste tightly limited developer budget and memory space on these things,
when it could have been put towards more circuits, cars, better physics, weather & time progression, FFB, real audio, etc.
I see it as quantified resources wasted, diverted away from what I really want out of this game,
... a great multiplayer race driving experience with my friends & like-minded strangers.

While, a few people have expressed a satisfaction with the bias moving towards online play,
most posting have been those who wished for a more complete offline game.
I respect that everybody likes different things, I'm just chiming in for some balance.

Point is, In the same vain, FIA just wants exposure from a big name to draw a younger crowd. Doesn't even matter that not all the tracks are real, just how many of that younger crowd they can get.
Then, the 'fantasy'concept it makes no difference. Right?

It won't take that younger crowd very long to realise that what they're playing in GTS is not what they're seeing in real life or on TV, if they are drawn in to watching or attending motorsport events.

Then PD ends up with even more disgruntled customers.

Also if this game was really all about racing they wouldn't have modeled the cars to insane levels of detail that you can't see when racing, IIRC they even admitted that themselves. If this game was purely about racing as the focus, they would've taken far less time and produced more unique cars. You know, the thing that is paramount to racing. It would be detrimental to the scapes and photo mode, but those are side-attractions to the racing, right?

Oh, and anyone else find the new product page utterly bizarre? On gran-turismo.com? The first thing they want to talk about, the major headline for the game, is technobabble about the graphics, even with super nerdy color graphs! They finally get onto the racing half way down the page, after they've waxed lyrical about HDR and how pretty things are several times. Then of course you get onto scapes and there is that "true HDR workflow" yet again.

How is that supposed to sell your game, unless your audience are tech nerds? Truly perplexing.
This is what really bugs me.

Sure insult my intelligence, I really believe SDR looks that dull.
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/forza-7

First banner is True 4K, built from the ground up UHD, at 60 frames per second.

That's what happens when you are a graphical showcase, this time especially so in Forza's case.
You serve as a vehicle to attract those who cannot experience yet.
Guess what thigh? Turn 10 have 2 games behind them already on this gen and Forza 7 has 700 cars. More cars than the previous game were a given, so new features are their main bulletin points. GTS bulletin points should be about how great the features pertaining to gameplay are, but there simply nothing there, This is still a game aimed at the mainstream/casual players, but it offers very little, especially if you're coming from GT6 and don't race online. I still see some people online ( not on this site ) expecting a career mode, it baffles me that they don't do any hope work.

We still don't know all the details about the campaign and offline content yet. It's unclear if racing etiquette will have race series or if there will be seasonal events. So we can't draw any conclusions based off what we know so far.

While I am happy with what I've seen so far, I wouldn't be upset about more offline content. I agree with the sentiment that there can be both (offline/online), but we shouldn't just assume that PD have turned their backs on those that want an offline racing series... not yet, at least.

This is what really bugs me.

Stopping the level design team from designing levels and stopping the photography team from designing photomode doesn't give the track creation, vehicle creation, physics, environment and sound teams any more time or personnel. It just stops there from being a 'career' or photomode.

Has anybody heard V8 sounds?
I'm curious if Corvettes and the like still sound like Honda Civics with an exhaust leak at the catalytic converter.

Here's some awesome footage by a GTP member that shows how far, not only V8 engines have come, but all of the cumulative sounds (chassis noise, wind noise, exhaust backfire):

Lap and Replay footage.

That's to put into perspective the effect of HDR for people with none HDR displays.

I really don't like these sort of pictures as well. Everyone in the industry uses them because you can't show HDR (it's a you need to see it for yourself kinda deal). So it's a bit daft.

I'm sorry, but you're setting yourself up for disappointment if you think Racing Etiquette is going to be full of race events and championships. We learned from the Copper Box presentation that it's about learning how to drive cleanly:

I agree, whenever an illustration like this is used there should be something to explain what's going on, it can be confusing though.

I think it's way better to show it like this:

HDR_comparison.jpg

Doesn't look washed out but you see what the difference would be on a normal vs HDR screen.

Without HDR we will see more blacks and more blown out whites (in the picture above, more blacks) and lose the middle range. People with HDR screens can see way more greys/collors between the blacks and whites. I'd like to have an HDR TV/monitor but until I see GTS running on one I think I'm ok with a normal screen. :D

Hm.
Engine sounds better, gearbox whine (realistic but) which is kind of annoying.
The most notable thing I saw was immediately, the track seems really flat and smooth, less suspension movement than any of its competitors. Lifeless in comparison, really. Much like GT5 and 6.

Yeah, there was that, but I think since then, the number of campaign events has grown (not sure how many more racing etiquette events there are now though).

The main point I'm trying to make is that, fort it to be something that seems really easy to throw in a game, I don't see them not having some form of offline racing series, even if it is a rotational seasonal event (or something like that). Given how well they received feedback during the beta, they have to be aware about the concerns about single player - they even addressed it before.

And just recently we have seen credits, xp points, and mileage points, and we don't know how they all tie together. Those are three progression pieces - very interesting. There's just too many open questions to conclude that PD have forgotten their player base.

Personally, I am too excited about the arcade mode allowing me to earn credits with all of my vehicles, so I wouldn't be disappointed if off-line racing series weren't there. I just think it's very unlikely that they won't be included.

Since I discovered online mode, career mode bores me a lot. If I want to relax alone, I will do a custom race or a time trial. But most of my time, I'm with real players.

Online mode will be the heart of GT Sport and I'm very happy that the series takes this path. And a campaign mode to prepare, to perfect before driving against real players is a very brillant idea.

I'm very pleased that PoDi believe in their idea from the beginning. I wish them every success :) I really can't wait 18th october :nervous:
Care to explain how running alone against the clock or running against AI in very short challenges helps you to prepare for driving against real players and what exactly is brilliant about it? The only thing that prepares you for racing against real humans is...real humans. iRacing has a good take on this IMO. You are stuck in the rookie classes with all the other rookies with limited content options until you achieve a driver rating that proves you are capable of running cleanly against other human beings.

Forgive me if this has been asked / addressed already, since there's 1063 pages however-
I have two questions:

From a standing start without driving aids, do cars lauinch and kick out from power/road camber?

Also - launching from wheelspin in first gear into second driving manual, has that 'delay' been removed?

Thanks in advance!

As does GT Sport.

But again that isn't true. I don't have an HDR screen so "simulating" it doesn't make sense.

Do you have a link to explain how the driver rating system works and at what point you gain access to the content you weren't able to access with your beginner driver rating?
I was focusing more on the moving up through the classes, being able to prove that you can race against other people, not the content part. Should've been more clear, my bad.

But, you do start out with low Driver Rating in the lower classes and thenove up the ranks as you race cleanly and finish well.

Polyphony could probably implement it better, like it is in iRacing with the content aspect, but I think it may cause the more casual people to turn away as they won't be able to drive fast cars immediately.

Copying my thoughts about the game from GAF

Honest question: how can you have such a decisive statement about the online experience when you haven't experienced either of the other big titles launching within a month of GT Sport?

Online racing may be more satisfying for you. It isn't for everyone, though. It remains to be seen how much that matters, and with other games offering what on the face of it seems like similar amounts of esports features without sacrificing a more traditional offline approach, it's going to be fascinating to see how the sim racing community responds to all these games this autumn.

.

It's based on my experience of games released rather than upcoming. I didn't like the online in PCARS. I join a session, spend 10 mins Qualifying then realize there is still 10 more mins of it (I'm already getting bored). During the race which has 16 cars and lasts for 10 laps, I have a battle with one or two drivers because a lot have already crashed and rage quit, or they're aliens with tunes that I won't catch. Plus the fact there will always be a car at the start line that just sits there for the whole race.

GT seems to build on what Driveclub did. Makes it simple and fast to join an event. Qualifying before the event is much better in my opinion (or the option to have it) and entering race knowing full well that you'll have great battles is what kept me playing the beta.

@Johnnypenso I disagree wholeheartedly, maybe you can force a good race with the AI by driving very underpowered cars (tried that and even then they were bad). But having AI that lets you by easily and you starting from last position in every single race isn't good racing at all.

Have you played PCARS? now that's how you do AI, but whatever that was in past GT games certainly isn't "racing".

Given that many of us have been doing so in other titles for two years, no. Not as much as those who seem to be looking at this as if GTS is offering cars that have never been seen this generation.
