First of all, there is no way to sure of the bold. It could end up that developers focus on the newer spec and don't optimise the lower spec as much as they would have if it was the only target. Second of all as I've already said, the difference is this is coming out x years after the original, only model. With a PC you always have that choice, you don't go out and buy a £400 PC and feel gypped your game doesn't look as good as your mate with a £1000 PC. You had that choice. Current PS4 gamers did not. They showed their faith in Sony and bought their machine day 1 and through to the present, believing what they had was the best and only model for Playstation games in this generation. They believed every game for that generation would play at it's best on their console, until PS5 came along with new games. Now you are potentially alienating that userbase by saying "Sorry we didn't give you the option, but hey, we've got a new, better model now. Fancy buying that one as well, it will actually play those games better than your model?"

Again, people had the choice there. Nobody could've bought the PS3 version and then feel annoyed because the PS4 version was better. They had the option to buy the better version when they made their purchase, they chose not to.

No choice here, if true.

Sell the old, buy new one, there's always a choice. PS4K will need 4K tv to get the full benefit, so those without 4K tv should get the tv first, then upgrade the console. If one do not wish to migrate to 4k tv, simply keep the PS4, games released on both PS4 and PS4K will have each version optimized, they are very similar anyway, unlike PS3 which was on totally different hardware platform. Games made for PS4K can simply reduce the graphic level to suit PS4, but I suspect most games will target for PS4 baseline performance, and upscale to 4K for PS4 version with some bumped up graphics. Of course, if one is power/graphic whore, would get PS4K even with 1080p tv, simply just to get that extra power in hand.

I don't see the big fuss about both PS4 and PS4K.

Because it destroys the one single advantage of the console. None moving target hardware. Games can be massively optimised in a way that is impossible on PC, plus multi million selling of machines is down to consumer confidence that if it's a PlayStation4 then it will be the same as every other PlayStation4 and that is that.
Two specs, that's it, not 20 odd different CPU's with 20 odd different GPU's on 20 odd different MB's as a possibility. If a Dev can't optimise for two different specs they they have no business being a Dev.

Apple ;) Change their whole product line every year and they go from strength to strength.

This is all about someone is going to have something better than me if I don't upgrade.

So than that just makes it sound wholly irrelevant. Why split the base if, going off your words, it's not going to change much. Either way, it just smells.
Because we are rampant consumers these days and Sony know they can make more money by doing it. Why else would they?

Problem is that some devs have a hard time optimizing for one. Ironically enough, one of which being the game this forum is based off of. That's where my issue is, at least.

Can't help you with PDI, they are a law unto themselves! I ran out of patience with them long ago and they will be the architects of their own demise.

I genuinely think that the reaction by some is making a mountain out of a molehill.

If the "significant" performance differences between PS4.0 and PS4K are to be believed, there's going to be a big fuss from PS4.0 owners.

That supposedly 2x GPU power will largely wasted on 4k res bump ( upscale ), I doubt it will be a big gulf in fps and graphical setting, but best to wait until the PS4K hardware is shown/sold and PS4K game reviewed by the likes of Digital Foundry to see how much difference it will be.

I know, but I was just using that as a prime example that things just might be a problem. To deny the situation, when we have such a great example right under our noses, and dismiss peoples issues with it, seems more like trying to turn a mountain into a molehill. The possibility for problems is what's worrying, but it's yet to be seen. I feel its a completely valid reason to be worried.

I will be perfectly ok with this whole "PS4K" deal as long as the standard PS4 ports don't suffer as a result. Ideally, games on the 4K will only be able to do higher output specs (resolution or framerate) or more on-screen assets over what originally would be developed for the 4. But I'm still concerned, because knowing the trends of the online era of gaming, the PS4 ports could very well suffer from launching with heavy optimization issues, forcing people to buy new hardware if they want a stable gaming experience. I really hope it won't go that route.

I really think this thread is way off topic, so I will end my PS4 vs. PS4K discussion with this: I wonder what will be the visual cue telling people "hey this is a PS4K game and not PS4". To clarify what I mean... Will the boxart for one say PS4 and the other PS4K? Or will it end up being the same disk that can play in both machines?

Questions, questions.... Still, I'm not buying one unless they offer a decent trade up. There's no sense in it as I said, when the PS5 is bound to be right around the corner.

A doubling of graphical power when making the jump from 1080p to 4K really isn't all that. Like I said, it'll be higher res and there might be a few extra bells and whistles but don't expect higher fps or vastly improved visuals.

Exactly the same, just like it is for PC gaming.

It seems like this whole idea is something much well better understood by PC gamers than it is console players... because to me and it seems a lot of others here as well, none of this makes sense lol

Like I've said it been happening in PC gaming for years and with much more extreme differences in spec than we are talking here. Other devs have coped with it perfectly fine, if PDI can't it's a failing with them not a difference in two relatively comparable specs.

For the record, the source of the rumours edited his post on GAF to clarify a bit:

Also the word "Sacrifices" is being blown out of proportion. There are sacrifices made when making a console version of a game as compared to a PC game or when making an XB1 game as compared to a PS4 game. Don't expect PS4 games to all of a sudden become **** just expect them to run better on PS4K. I would expect a game that is really pushing the graphics envelope to run at 1080p 60fps on PS4K while the same game might run at 900p 60/30fps on PS4. Just the way I took it.

Look at any PC game and you'll. Find a menu called display settings or graphics or something similar. In there you will find a bunch of sliders that let you change various in game graphical settings that effect how the game looks. Increasing them to make the game look better is more taxing on the hardware in your PC. PC gamers change these depending on their hardware and find a balance between graphical looks and acceptable performance (usually fps). And that's all done within the same game on the same disc. Two specs of PS4 will carry out those changes in graphical settings automatically for you. Each Dev will choose two sets of graphical settings that make their game look it's best with acceptable performance and those settings will be applied automatically depending on which console you have. Once again all on the same disc. You won't even notice any difference to your gaming ;)

This.... makes a lot of sense! Thanks for the clarification

There you go, as you can see not a great difference at all. So a slightly better resolution and frame rate but no differenc in how the game looks.

Except for the fact this isn't a PC, and is something new to adopt to consoles. We'll have to wait to see what becomes of it, but that doesn't take away from the fact that this can produce some complications. We'll have to wait and see, I say, but it's still a perfectly valid concern when you think about a top dev not even being able to optimize for one set of specs, as I'm sure there are plenty more. You have faith, that's fine. However, I'm skeptical not only for the split this is going to cause, but for the developers as well.

All in all, as you pointed out earlier, if the changes are going to be minimal it just seems unnecessary to even do so.

Maybe this does stem from most console gamers not being involved in the PC scene and a little lack of understanding what it all means. I really don't think anyone should be too worried about it. Those who want to spend the extra money will see a nice little performance boost but it's not going to make current PS4 users into lesser mortals or anything like that.

PS4k MasterRace confirmed. :P

If devs start optimising more for PS4K than PS4.0 then there's going to be trouble from the original userbase. Either way one end of the spectrum is going to be shafted.

They really aren't. Look at what the Neogaf dude posted in his clarification. Does that really seem like such a large performance gain to you?

Not sure why you're taking what he's saying as gospel. Still no idea who he is, where he is on the ladder and how much of what he's saying is just guesses or assumptions.

...I don't know man. I am worried. Looking at how it's been like with 3DS ecosystem, I can't help but feel there will be games that won't be playable on regular PS4s. If not immediately, then in a couple of years of time they could appear.

As I said before, the pricing strategy from Sony will dictate how well accepted this whole thing will be.

All PS4 title should be upscaled to 4K on PS4K when connected to compatible 4K tv, there may be titles with 4K badge ( specific enhancement for 4K ) that will get benefits of PS4K extra power, this may be shown on the box.

Optimizing on both PS4 and PS4K should be much easier than doing it for 2 generation of console like PS3 and PS4. This time, the major difference is only in details levels and native res with both console sharing similar platform. It's like having 2 PC, one with twice the GPU allows the game to run at higher res and some graphic slider on ultra or high and maybe better anti aliasing.

What makes wonder is will there be 4K assets ( textures ) for PS4K titles, and will PS4K really strong enough for that ? I highly doubt that, and most will be upscale to 4K from base 1080p.

Being verified as legit on Neogaf is, from what I understand, quite a good guide. Obviously they can't verify what was said in this meeting but they can verify that this person is who they say they are and would likely be present at such a meeting. You only have to look around the web at legit news sites to see that PS4K is real, Eurogamer.net have independently verified it's real for example, so it does exist and this guy has been confirmed to be who he says he is, so on the balance of that I'm prepared to believe what he says.
