Meh, other than the "OMG it's GT" aspect of the E3 demo, there isn't much separating PD's switch from Grid's. They look very similar.

Ahhh, the driving... it's so painful.

My original impulse was to point out that while other games have done the day/night transition, they haven't done it to GT's apparent quality. However, that really was rather impressive. I see your point.

I think the last truly new thing PD has brought to the table of console sims has been... Photomode. Maybe B-Spec?

And they did it in their last full car racing game.

Btw. day/night cycles were already in PS1 games (Test Drive Le Mans for example), I'm pretty sure it wasn't in GT4 because of hardware limitations, they already maxed it out with the game itself.

You know Grid has day/night right?

Ignore the terrible driving and physics, that's day/night and done quite a while ago now. People need to stop acting like day/night is some new and revolutionary thing that PD is doing.

What triggers the excitement for me is that in GT5, you don't need to ignore the physics. If you choose to ignore you also add Burnout Paradise, GTA IV and Midnight Club:LA to that list but do it at your own peril.

On that note, is it accurate to say GT5 is the first racing simulator to have day and night cycles?

No, there have been several on both consoles and PC, the earliest I can remember is Test Drive Le Mans on the PS2.

In my opinion, not. ;) As other have mentioned, Test Drive Le Mans for the PS1 already had that, and I consider that game to be a simulator.

EDIT: Damn you, Justin! :D

"24 hour race part 1 of 2"

It's a 7 minute video... Does Grid do highlights in it's replays or are they seriously suggesting a 24 hour race can be squeezed into <20 minutes?

Does Grid even allow full 24 hour races? Does Shift? Does Forza 2/3? Do other console titles this gen allow races this long?

In Grid you can make it so the 24 hour race is the full 24 hours, you can make it shorter as well(as seen in the video).

Some driving games have Day night transition BUT Its different to see it with Gran Turismo 5 Graphical detailed ..More advanced quality and more realistic so yes you can say this is the first time to add this DnN thing to Genre with this quality and reality.

Well... GT always delivered on the lighting aspect, GT5 is no different, it has a mind-bending lighting (IMO), so, automatically, that pretty much makes its implementation of day\night cycle better than the other games, oh yeah *insert emoticon*

Plus, it's completely okay to go gaga over something so mind-bending-ridiculous-awesome-wowsome :P

So if the 800 standard cars are ports from GT4 and GTPSP, will they be the exact ones? What I mean is will they be the old versions of Polo Corsa Golf etc? Or will them type of cars be the updated models like 09/10 models?? I assume we all don't know but if anyone could shed some decent ideas that would be great!!

Well, it's safe to assume they're not updated, or else we wouldn't be hearing "from past GT games". They would be new to the series, since only a handful of cars haven't gone through at least one full generation change since GT4.

If they are ported I assume they are the exact same ones, otherwise they would have to remodel them as the newer version in real life are often entirely new ( not just a face lift ), I think I've read somewhere the only new cars in GT5 are the Premium models ( which also include new and classic cars already seen ).

Not only lightning issue You forgot Mind blowing detailed Car models Day n Night Transition changes everhything in the game. Both Car and Track reflections and colour in transitions are DEFINITIVE! Tail lights changes dust smokes colour at night Headlight reflect to direction plates. This is not only Lightning thing. It means Attention to detail in GT standards

Add in properly modelled lights, and high beam functionality - although some Japanese drift games have that as well :)
If the lights weren't properly modelled then the standard cars would have high beams as well, but they won't in GT5

Mhh the 10 th magazine about GT5 with some great cover... and nothing usefull inside...

Unless your into Australian cars that is, which is why it's an Aussie Playstation mag

Something I've noticed in the Standard car video is that the headlights certainly aren't functioning on the Bentley as they do in Toscana. They look just like they do in GT4...

On top of this, alot of people (in general) grab specific qualities from other racing games and say [insert game title] has it, I don't see why GT can't. Well, that single quality may be the only special thing that game offers. GT5 shares many, many different features from these other games and does it all in one package, and does it arguably to the highest quality considering everything else involved.

I don't understand why they couldn't add two different light sources to headlamps in Standard cars. Surely light sources are independent of a fully modelled light cluster. It's another one of those 'but why not use a generic interior for the 800 Standard cars' arguments.

I guess the answer is it's not good enough for Kaz.

Anyways chaps do you think we'll be able to use the day/night cycle on track days or maybe even set the time so we could make it stay dusk or dawn for the whole session?

Been playing GT5P today and I used, for the first time ever, the Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG. Amazed at the detailed handling...the thing wants to bob about through all the fast corner. It's ace.

I still regard GT5P as having the best AAA sim console handling model. I can't get enough of using rear wheel drives, giving them stick and watching the replays...seeing the back end kick/jolt/twitch out.

Everything looks so bloody natural.

As they say, you can't polish a turd! :sly:

Not sure if anyone mentioned this but yes, you can actually polish a turd into a very shiny ball of poop.

The SLR in GT4 had the standard 5-spoke 18" wheels. The 19" wheels will refer to the 19" 'Turbine' wheel option that most SLR's you'll see on the road (or in pictures) will have.

The 19" turbine wheels are the standard wheels as far as I could find. The only year that edmunds.com had options listed for the SLR is 2006MY and that car lists 19" as standard and 18" as options.

The Time Trial felt was even better than Prologue in every regard

holy crap, just bought the F40 in FM3... The Cockpit looks so bad... And also it sounds and feels completely different as in GT5P...

The thing you notice, especially with cars like the F40, is how easy it is to drive in FM3.

Whether that is more or less representative of real life, I don't know, I haven't driven an F40. But i'm going to bet it's not as easy to drive as it is in Forza.
