I just had to share this...

After reading parts of this thread about how someone used a home theatre system to enhance the carsounds , i got the idea to buy a high quality headset and do the same thing.

i bought the PX5 from Turtlebeach because it has 7.1 dolby surround and programmable settings and al i can say/confirm is that there is infact a very nice soundnote to be found !

I can give my exact settings to anyone who wants to know , it basically comes down to more bass and less in the high frequencies...

For example , the other day i stayed behind the AI the whole race just to listen to a TVR that was driving in front of me , yes the sound you get is that good , a huge improvement !
( ps : i'm not advertising this headset , i couldn't care less what everyone buys ;-) )

The problem is that you really shouldn't invest in anything to fix the sound quality of this game, PD needs to patch this issue and it should've been a priority matter since day 1. Instead of focusing their resources in that GPS tracking thing they should've adressed this issue first.

I suppose you could say the same thing about playing the game on a SD TV. It should work, yes, and it does, but it's not the best way to play it.
In the same vein, it would be great if they found a way to make the "mix" pop a bit better on crap speakers (e.g. TV speakers), or anything "stereo", for that matter. It's still going to be a better experience with the better hardware, though.

Let's not conflate separate issues, either. Quite what the sound team had to do with the GPS data logger is beyond me. GT5's sound issues are due to a lack of samples, possibly because of a recording oversight and there being far too many cars to tend to ( / not enough people to tend to them). It'd also have to be one hell of a patch!
Sometimes I think some people have little to no understanding of the processes involved: it will take years to get the necessary data to "patch" the game, and there's little point in diversions (such as interim / stop-gap patching) that will only delay this further. They may have started already, I don't know. I still wouldn't hold my breath for a patch to "fix" GT5's sound.

There was truth to what was being said: better hardware does make the game sound better (especially if you can abandon the stereo mix), but of course it's not going to magically add those missing samples, and redistribute a few others. TV speakers are generally 🤬 anyway, so it's worth upgrading for everything. :P

The team that worked on the Sounds are not the same team working on the GPS Tracker.

I already have a 5.1 system in my cockpit, I was even contemplating the idea of switching the front/rear speakers arround!
For what I can see here people get the decent results by increasing rear speaker output, with the preset settings on my reciever there's barely any sound coming from the rears. Now I don't think it would be much of an issue for PD to change this on a patch.

I Have a 5.1 and a 7.1. With my 5.1 I never hear the back speakers. With my 7.1 the front act as the motor the rear acts like the exhaust. Its the best GT5 has to be played with HDMI 7.1.

Using the 5.1 setting in GT5's options, all levels come through about equal for me, (over optical: DTS, into my PC).

Could be a receiver thing; I know it's distracting with film to have the surround too distinct at times, so it might be deliberate.

Then again, try some of the other settings in GT5's config. There's "virtual surround", which comes through as 5 channel, but my headphones don't know what to make of it; and the 7.1 might still work on 5.1 (it's probably just up-mixed anyway).

My 5.1 system is shown as 7.1 in GT5, so if i drive in cockpit/hood view, engine/transmission etc. noise comes from the front, exhaust from the rear speakers. My system also "knows" where the car exhaust is and where the driverseat is. Which means, if a car has its only exhaust on the left side, the left speaker produces most of the exhaust sound.

None the less, it can not be the job of the players to optimise the audiomixture of a game, this is the job of the developer.

I think I'll be needing a new optical audio cable for my system, the PS3 only sees my system as a 2chnl...

So, any toughts on the "racing sound effects" update?

Indeed. They're a bit more bold on the US version; they're not just talking mere "adjustments", but straight-up improvements!

We shall see...

I'm hoping for the best!! Hoping for those sweet start up sounds in the garage to come into effect... Little worried about them saying "racing sounds" instead of engine sounds.

Racing sounds could be everything, including the return of wind noise. To be honest, I like the sounds in GT5, but you complainers are doing a service to those who want the BEST sounds across the board. One thing I'm hoping they do is provide level adjustments to various things, because I need to hear those tire sounds better. In the GTRs, I bumped up the tire sounds to unrealistic levels, but it was a big help in riding the edge of grip.

For replays, GT5 lacks ONE big thing: the loud pops and crackles for the racing cars, It would be amazing to hear them after this update.

The worst part is that GT5 has some decent sound samples, but they are applied wrong.

-The sound sample From the Ford GT Race Car is the sound sample that should me used by the RM Vettes, Mercedes SLS Stealth and most other big V8s with a race exhaust.
-The Sound sample used by the RM Vettes is the sound sample that should be used by the Ferraris and 07 BMW M3 with the Racing Exhaust.
-The Ford GT Race car should use the same sound sample the Ford Falcon Race Car uses.
-The Zonda R and all V12 cars with a racing exhaust should use the sound sample from the Veyron with the race exhaust.
-The Sound sample from the Audi R8 LMS should be used for all V10 cars equiped with a Racing Exhaust.
-The GT-R TCs should use the same Sound Sample the Fairlady Concept LM uses.

This little tweaks can be easily done by PD and included on a small update. Small tweaks that would make the game so much more enjoiable.

I'm pretty sure that this will be the only sound update we will get, so I'm hoping they at least reasign the sound samples like quoted above...

I think it is the transmission whine from the full custom box which makes use of it pain for ears.

To a large extent. Would be nice to turn down the gear whine some.

I just hope this update does not make my system sound like crap because with the right exhaust on a car it sounded great.

What I'm hoping for is that race exhausts and semi race exhaust sound proper on most cars after update. Race exhaust only sounded nice on a select few cars and on other cars it made a car that sounded great with standard or sports exhaust into a car that sounded like absolute garbage!!!!!!

If engine sound is one of the changes on the sound effects improvement, I really hope they change the sound of the Sauber C9. It sounds like a hair dryer.

Someone posted a video of a race car of some kind with that horrendous racing transmission whine, so it's evidently pretty close to that. The gears are straight cut rectangles, and they scrape against each other as the tranny rotates causing that high pitched screeching noise.

One thing to consider in all this is that Kaz has been racing in pro races for a while now, and along with our input from GT Planet, I'd expect that he'd be inspired to urge the sound design team to step it up a notch. Especially for those strange folk who really like the ridiculous roars made in that other game from stock cars. I agree that Gran Turismo could stand to be better, but I have to politely disagree with you guys who insist that GT5 is still just awful.

About the transmission whine...

Yes, it would be nice to be able to adjust the volume of this. The issue I have is not the sound of the whine but the fact that all cars with a custom transmission sound the same because the transmission noise is overpowering.

What I changed in red is dead on!!

I've driven a strait cut trans before....THEY ARE LOUD. And in GT5 sometimes when they are really loud it's due to the chassis or body lightening. They don't fully tell you it's like really stripping down an interior of a car.

I've found with my system I can drive with stock transmission and find out what exhaust has a proper sound then switch to the race transmission and the whine comes in, then when I stage 1 2 and 3 with the weight reduction the gear whine gets louder and louder.

I wonder what it would be like with a sound system.

That's a shame. Just try a setting with strong bass and lower-midrange sound. That should get a similar effect.👍

Hey yo, so I recently began to use an older surround sound system, and it is incredible! I'm thinking about buying a newer unit now...the game sound is much better with a good sound system. So ebay here we come!!!

Realistic compromise for transmission whine would be to allow final gear adjustment without adding whine.(changing size of gears at differential end of axle does not add noise)

This, I really hope we can get a finial drive adjustment setting. 👍

FOR THE WIN!!!!!!!!!!! I've always disliked how the rear end gears were listed with adjustable transmission. That's the adjustable rear end.

I don't have a problem so much with the presence of Gearwhine, its more of a problem with how its applied to almost every race car including ones that don't have straight cut gears. Its not really necessary to have on every car.
