Well, nothing's changed for me. I haven't raced in 2 weeks, and... I still suck.

I didn’t do any of last weeks daily races, but have had a couple of goes on Race C this week. First run in the 911 was quick enough in qualifying to put me somewhat out of position in 5th surround by A/S drivers… needless to say, for my first race on the combo, mistakes were made! Car was quick but I made too many mistakes and took too much life out the tires and then compounded the problem by staying out a laptop long. Finished last 🤦‍♂️

Move onto this morning and had a run in the 650S. I don’t think it’s as fast over a lap (about 0.4s with me driving but then I usually drive the Porsche so am more comfortable with it), but I found the tire wear to be less and the car to be better over the curbs in the last chicane. My 911 QT put me second on the grid in a mixed lobby, and that’s where I stayed. Was within 2 secs of P1 for the first 4 or 5 laps before I had a half spin in sector one. Ran 9 laps on mediums and the last on hards but forgot about the put exit line and picked up a 3 sec penalty for the last lap which cost me my CRB (another 🤦‍♂️). I’m not racing enough to stay at the front or be really competitive (splitting time with Le Mans TT), but I did enjoy this race. My overall race elapsed time wasn’t that great, and I would have finished further down the order normally, but first lap carnage behind me gave me some breathing room. Reasonable start to the week all in

What on earth is this lobby? A+ S down to C S or B A? I've never seen anything like that!

Is this PS4? Or just really early morning?

Daily race B is not being kind to me tonight. I’m about two races away from being relogated back to a DRC rating. The last two races I’ve been taken out and ended up finishing in the bottom three cars. Amazingly in each of those cases, I was last until halfway through the last lap, and then I would gain two spots. So the morale of the story is never give up.

I keep on hoping things will improve, so I keep on doing the race. I must be mad.

That said I’m currently at a 1.39.9 something and I know I have another half a second in my lap. I need to improve my QR. that might help. I need to get out of the midpack.

Race at 5 AM in the morning and you can get wild lobbies like that. I’ve been in lobbies that have been A+ all the way to D.

Question inspired by RaceC, but really to be looked at more generally.
In races where a tire and compound change is required, how do you adjust the driving style in racing?
I'm not talking about strategy and choosing the right time to change, but just the fact that different tires have different performance.
Do you do free practice runs with the different compounds to get the different braking, opening and speed references in your head and apply them in race?
Do you know the references of the least performing compound and start from there and push a little harder? The other way around?
Leave it up to instinct?

I ask because I have noticed that when I change from a better performing compound to a lesser one I can manage by being a bit more careful and possibly adjusting lap by lap, whereas when I change from a less performing compound to a better one I make a huge mental effort to push harder and usually improve less than one could

For me on a wheel it’s all about feel and just instinct. What I feel in my hands and on the wheel determines how I brake and accelerate.

The biggest gain though I feel is doing offline practice rather than the TimeTrail on the lobby. The TT is good to learn the track, get your braking points and lines, but going into a offline multiplayer lobby where you can add BOP, tyre and fuel wear is where I pick up most of my knowledge. I start out by just doing laps on the softest tyres and once I’ve know the braking the points and lines to take, I then move to the next tyre up. Having known that braking point for the soft I then slightly adjust my brake points to compensate the less tyre grip. Also just knowing how the tyre behaves over a lap in race conditions will help in the daily race. Ive seen people just use the TT to do all this, but as they is no tyre wear or fuel the car behaves differently so you don’t get a true feeling.

One of my biggest flaw’s especially with this weeks daily race is getting used to the new feeling of the harder compound. Been on mediums for x laps and then switching to hards, it can take me a few laps to adjust but also the new tyre temp model could be a factor too. That’s something I need to improve on.

So last night I QT'd better for race B and got a decent 1:39.043 time. I then jumped on another race and was shocked to find myself in pole.
Pole_20230614011023.jpg

In the race I pulled out a lead of some seconds by lap 3 with no threat to me. At that point I guess I eased off too much and lost focus as my time started to slip and a certain car from south of the border started to gain on me. By the last lap they had caught me and was putting pressure on me. My driving went to shot (last lap nerves and pressure) but I thought I would hold them off and then this happened last corner.

My fluff (yes I did go wide) but was his punting me off track really unavoidable as they claim or did that look deliberate?

Yeah he just drove into you mate. Could get two busses side-by-side on the rest of the track.
Obviously just punted you and then lied about it.

Been having a great time with race A this week, sorta.... lol

Great fun in q laps between races, but i can not get through the first sector in race on lap 1 without catastrophic errors. The cold tires and fuel weight are really messing with me this week it seems.

Will be trying more again later today. Apologies in advance if you see me out there and you get cought up in my mistakes lol

He could easily have got the win without hitting you. Unnecessary contact. I think you missed the apex on every corner in that clip - but you already know that I think!

I might've discovered a bug. I have been trying to do the Manu cup two times this day but both were ruined before i could start them because of rain coming in in the last 3 seconds while waiting in the lobby for the race to start.

I did try to race, but i was sliding like an iceskater in the first few corners unfortunately, and i'm not gonna waste 30 minutes twice. So twice i left the race, but for some reason it added a top 5 to my stats? I was on 65 before them, now i'm on 67. Must be a bug.

After I did my first Race B on Monday, I was quite surprised to read about dirty driving yesterday, as my race was very clean!

Then, I did a race just now and quickly caught up with your annoyances 🤣 Jesus, it was an assault on the senses! I started P15 in a mostly A+ lobby thinking ok, this should be interesting...

It was, but for the wrong reasons ⚰️ Still driving the 650s in a sea of Silvias, it was hard enough to keep up but when I did, it was all about trying to avoid the swipes and ramming 😅

Thankfully, I managed that 90% of the time, which meant I finished in a relieved P13 🤣 I can't seem to improve on my 1:38:4 though I came close a few times. So here it is:

Good luck friends, you will definitely need it! 🫣😅🤐

Shift the McLaren at about 55-60% on the rev bar (I do it just as it passes the current gear in the HUD) and you'll shave off a few tenths instantly. The car bogs down real bad when you rev it out.

Yep, last lap went to pot. Kept on focusing in the car behind and not my line and lost the plot. Sometimes I hate being in the lead... Luckily, that is a dilemma I don't face very often! :sly:

I've had some nice clean races with CRBs and some terrible ones. Last night I got in a bunch of terrible ones. Remember no one ever b*tches about the races where nothing ever happens.

How do you figure out the best shift point? Is there a cheat sheet somewhere? I'm always wondering if I should rev a car out or shift up earlier. Sometimes I see the rev needle stutter when accelerating and not sure if that is because I'm losing traction or if the engine is bogging down. When I see that I am beginning to shift earlier and I think that helps but still learning this...

To be honest I don't know, I just was losing time in the straights when I used it so checked the top McLaren replay, saw what they were doing and copied it lol

I think it's something to do with the power curve in the car settings, but I don't know what 'point' reveals the optimal shifting RPM.

Blatant punt. No doubt about it in my opinion. He could have backed off and still beaten you out of the corner.

When you qualify for a daily, find a reference shift point and stick to it for your first lap. When you have a ghost you can adjust shift points and see the difference. Set your ghost to 0.3 or 0.4 difference and you can see if a gear change is better or not. I used this method on the M4 as it really dies if you rev it out.

Shaved off 2 tenths within a lap haha and loads of potential to go faster. Thank you, sensei 🥳 Will try later on or tomorrow as got things to do right now.

The thread has wandered slightly since I just caught up to the latest posts...

Driving the Ferrari 512 around a legendary fictional circuit is exactly what Gran Turismo is all about. Given the absence of a suitable challenge in single player whereby I can test myself in race conditions, how else am I supposed to try out the limits of each of the countless cars in the game?

Now, I'm not begrudging the 'serious' racing of Group 1/2/3/4 because that is totally amazing, too! Obviously the BoP could and should be sorted out for more variety, and variety is exactly what I'm looking for!!

TLDR; Would be happy racing road cars in single player if there were a good challenge available.

I went out again to try and grab some races last night in daily A. Got frozen lobbies both first 2 races. Got to the title screen before the grid walk and no further. So I did a bunch of qualifying laps for a while.

Finally did get in a race and can say I've made massive gains through sector 1 off every start. My routine is to never hit the throttle full blast unless I'm on a flat straight until after the back straight that first lap. And I do some throttle feathering to keep it settled. Not exactly sute how it works, but still pushing to get a race time under 9 minutes. There's always a mistake or 2 thwarting me. Stuck with a 9:00.8 as my best.
