Some serious fun in Monday afternoon Race C's today....

Only 2 races but they had all sorts. Managed to qualify 5th after a 9-lap warm up, thoroughly enjoying the combo.

In Race 1 I had a false start, a result of being too eager and jumpy to get going after a week away from Sport Mode. Then I totally rammed someone who was pitting on lap 2 because I thought they were going defensive after a poor corner exit. Karma came back to bite me as I fluffed my own pit stop completely, getting the dreaded 3 sec penalty as well as a nice 180 spin into the wall! Somehow, I didn't finish last.

Race 2, was a massive regroup moment. Started 5th again bit this time I pitted after Lap 1 so I could have to track to myself, by the tail end of the contest I had a couple of fast guys on my six, one of which was the Fastest Lap holder, I was fearing the worst. Luckily for me, one took the other out out-braking themselves and then I picked up a couple of places through penalties and people binning it. Came home in 2nd!

I think the 'pointless' pitstop is actually a really neat idea. It means you have (technically) 12 different strategies available.

I find it a shame for AT drivers who will be totally at a disadvantage no matter how fast they are, and this might affect participation numbers.

Ahhhhhh back to the forum for the italian late-night update...and.....for the first time ever I'm DR - B ranked!
Well, at least until tomorrow :D
 Yep, I know that feeling well!
Some of us use the tools we are offered, such as automatic transmission. Some of us lack sufficient dexterity to operate our controllers without that aid.

I was under the impression that the transmission choice was merely a device to move the vehicle, not a measure of whether or not I need to “Git gud”.
Absolutely! Don't let anyone try to shame you into driving any other way that what works for you. I drive with all assists on, and although I've tried numerous times to drive without some of them in the hopes I get faster, it just doesn't work for me. So drive proudly, and have fun!
I envy your position. There are those of us that have to spend days at work with no time available at all to race.
I know you didn't mean anything bad by your comment - I totally get it. Still, I have to respond because, well, that's just me!

Chances are that I've spent more time at work over my lifetime than most of you all that are still working. Having made it to retirement age means I paid my dues and then some. (Working in IT has meant putting in tons of extra hours. The term "second 40" definitely applied to my working days.) So now I'm gonna enjoy my second childhood!

And I'm pulling for the rest of you to survive the grind until you get to yours!

My apologies, I didn't take that into consideration, that makes sense. Didn't mean to offend, sorry that I came off that way.

Do any of you know whether this type of wheel is considered to be more ergonomic than the standard thrustmaster wheelz?

For some reason I enjoy the daily races on shorter tracks, even though you have to contend with more traffic
So much is personal preference.

I switched to that same open wheel after only a month of using standard and I believe it is more ergonomic. Definitely a natural feel for hand positioning and shifting.

I really thought I’d be switching back and forth from the open to round but I tried a couple of times and didn’t like the feeling that the round wheel gave.

Open wheel is all I use since the switch more than a year ago.

On the plus side, who knows what VR racing will be in 22 years when I can retire!

Had a couple of decent B races tonight.

Started p9 in the first one. No carnage into t1 and really a good race with lots of good pressure being put in all race long. At one point was up to p7 but finished p8 when a ford and another Peugeot passed from my slip stream at after the bus stop on lap 3. I trailed them closely on lap 4 and never had enough to get back by.

Second race I was shocked to land p4 on the grid. T1 was once again clean and on lap one I made up two places due to a .5 and a 1 second penalty on two racers in front of me so up to p2 to start lap 2.

The Fords seem quicker on exits and they excel in the slip stream from a long ways back so holding off p3 was a losing battle. He got by me on the right-hander after the esses (t4?) on lap 3
Stayed on him and he picked up a .5 in the bustop lap 3 so I got back to p2 and held it in a race to the finish line on the final lap.

Lots of adrenaline from just the two races and happy to have some success after a tough week last week.

cheers to the new week 🍻

Did my first race on my new account. Race B in the E/B lobby. Did one lap super slow qualifying as i just wanted to stay out of trouble to quickly up my SR. Was shocked that half of the field didn't do a single qualifying lap and ended up on 9th position to start. Of course it was a big mess and i wanted to stay out of trouble. Avoiding most divebombs i ended up on 4th place in lap 4 and due to not even a single driver being experienced i won on the last straight. Now i have one race won but i have a feeling that in these lobbies it will take a while to build up my clean race stats.

My goal is to do one race B per day so that i can build an SR:S until the next Gazoo race comes up in less than 2 weeks.

After not liking last week's races which I abandoned after two bad B races to focus on the TTs instead, I entered race B tonight. I had already done the esports challenge (for those in the USA) and was in the top 200 for that so I was comfortable with the Daytona road course. I find it funny that both the esports challenge and race B use Daytona Road this week.

I got my time sub 1:47. I think there is another .3s in me at least but I usually set my best times on Monday (before I ingrain bad habits) so I don't know..

Entered race 1 and I'm happy to see I'm Q2. I messed up the bus stop lap 1 and got a .5s penalty. That allowed a squad of Fort GTs to descend on me, that I had previously opened up a lead from, and I slipped back to 5th after a messy turn 6 entry as well. I bit rattled by all this I further messed up the bus stop and slipped back to 6th. At this point I was questioning my life choices! LOL. One of those cars, however, also had a penalty so 5th regained! But then through the road section 5th and 6th was traded several times but I came out in 5th. Lap 4 there was a yellow flag and then P3 disappeared from the leader board. I think they rage quit. Now in 4th I had better exit out of the bus spot and made up a lot of time on P3. I also had the draft and probably could have taken them but twice focusing on the drag I missed my shift points and bounced off the limiter. In the end I missed 3rd by 0.027s. It turned out to be a fairly eventful race.

Race 2 and I start Q3. This was a straight forward processional with the top 4 all remaining in the starting spots. Not sure what happened behind them. I was beginning to lose pace with the top 2 by lap 3 and ended 2.1s back from them. P4, who was over 1.5 seconds down at one point, ended up only .2s behind me. Why do I allow that to happen? That was a bit too close for comfort. Still a 3rd!

I think race B, if you have a good QT and are in the top 3 and drive clean can be a significant DR Booster this week. At least until your rating grows and you are no longer top 3! I need to get my QT into the mid 1:46s.

That recovered my DR from last week and then some. However I have a way to go to recover from the prior week's (28) carnage.

The Fords seem quicker on exits and they excel in the slip stream from a long ways back so holding off p3 was a losing battle.
Is a race between the Peugeot VGT and the Ford GT LM cars this week. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. Some points I found the Fords holding me up but I could not find pace to pass them and in other places I was surprised how quick the Fords can gain on the VGT. I would think one was better in the road course and the other better on the oval but then next lap it would switch.

I'm not sure any other car need apply though. Anything else got left behind.

could have finished 8th but got a 3 second ignoring the yellow flag warning - arrived into total carnage at a corner and went by some ghosted cars so did not think I was doing anything wrong. Bit unfair tbh but sure what can you do.
I assume the game wants you to come to a stop and attempt to identify which particular ghosted car brought out the yellow..

Yeah it's a ridiculous flag for a video game with minimal damage in which cars are ghosted when crashing anyway.

I'm probably still 5 to 10 years from retirement, but the idea of having a world of VR gaming to keep me entertained in retirement is a very enticing proposition. What's so great about gaming is it's dirt cheap to keep playing again and again. When you've got no job to do you can race all day for almost nothing. Sure there's a fair bit of up front cost to get a PS5/PSVR5/Wheel/Pedals to start with, but once purchased the running costs on top to spend hours and hours playing is negligible.

I hope where we are now with driving games and VR is the begining of something that will really take off and keep getting better and better. The one thing really lacking is now what we've complaining about in this thread, the lack of interesting races with good car/track/strategy combos. As more players join then I really hope that also expands the options, so we can all find just the right sort of races we're looking for.

And for any one envious of those who can spend all day playing in retirement, think how much better games you'll have when you get there.

Let's see... in 22 years, assuming I'm still around, I'll be 88. I hope by then that VR:
  1. ...is controlled directly by the brain, because I'm uncoordinated enough now as it is.
  2. ...no longer makes me so sick that it lasts for hours.
  3. ...can remind me which car is mine, because my memory is bad enough now as it is.
What's so great about gaming is it's dirt cheap to keep playing again and again.
That is SO true. I remember back in lockdown, I played Animal Crossing for more than 1,500 hours, which was pretty-much every day for 6 months. I just checked GT7, and it's more than 1,600 hours! Wow, I think I should be better with that many hours played

EDIT: I just did my first Race B this week. Lesson learned: Don't take the first turn wide. Unless you want to be forced to meet Barry R, and finish last.

Nice work on those races. Your qt time should keep you near the top for a bit. Getting more at this point probably means all sectors are very good. I keep nailing the first half only to go too cautious in the bus stop or run slow on in the first half and nail the bus stop to bring in nearly the same time 😂

I do believe the Supra will make a showing as well. It was fairly competitive in practice lobbies and in the right hands, it is plenty capable of wins.

The Pug is quite challenging in VR as it has you sitting outside the car like on the roof and you get no gauges and can’t see to the sides or behind.
I need to use radar for traffic and sound for shift points. Can’t even tell top speed unless watching a replay 🙄

You and I are in pretty much the same space, lol. The SO keeps asking me what I want to do for a hobby and, while accurate, stating that my 'hobby' is her never-ending stream of MUST-DO tasks around the house should suffice, it's rarely well received.

My argument is that anything 'real-world' I want to do from a hobby perspective is waaaaaaaaaaaay too expensive long-term to be sustainable. The only thing I really WANT to do is drive amazing cars at amazing places and at amazing rates of speed. Short of hitting the lottery, that's just not gonna happen. Cars? Karts? Local enduros at the dirt-track? While I may pull it off a couple times, I know that, at some point in time, imma hafta walk-away due to budgetary limitations. Sad. Nope. I'll be dying on this hill, of that I am confident. 😁

As for this weeks races, Daytona is gonna have to wait until I figure it out, lol. Took the Porsche out, which was a huge mistake, but even if it was hittin' 200mph on the straights I'd be doomed. Race C is fun but a bit more of a commitment than I've had time for thus far. And, really, I'm not confident enough at Atlanta yet, either. I think some more time in the track experiences is in order for these two before I put myself out there to ruin everyone else's day.

Race A, however, has my attention. It's still a relatively new course to me but I picked-up my groove pretty quickly. PLUS, I'm back in an old friend...the WRX. Love this car. It's only detriment is it's brick-like aerodynamics versus the BoP. Might swap out hardware for the Bug', which is another favorite, just not typically on courses this tight. We'll see, though. For now, I'm lining-up top 5 on the grid in low-A lobbies with a 1:12.772 in the WRX. Pretty sure it can get into the 11's.

So far since joining the fray of GT7, things have been going well. I'm moving up through the ranks and maintaining my SR, can't ask for much more than that. Happy racing, all!

I think I'll be sticking with Race C for the entirety of the week (I might have a punt or two on Race A, but I'll see how my ratings fare as the week goes on). BUT.….

I've got SLOWER in the Radical since I started following @Tidgney 's race guide. Due to the idea of double-shifting got into my brain box it's totally disrupted my race flow. Up until now I was blissfully short-shifting and doing just fine in the race with consistent and predictable laps, now I'm all over the place, not sure which gear I should be in!

It's definitely good for getting a quick quali lap, but there's so much going on in the first few laps of the race itself that I think I'm just gonna drive in a way that comes more naturally.

@Cherryturbo You bring up an important point for everyone to be mindful of.

Before you give anybody grief about the tools they use, or their driving methods, consider that there are certainly many people we share the track with that have physical limitations. Not everyone using a controller, A/T, driving aids, etc., is doing so by choice.
There are likely many racers that could never use the pedals, due to paralysis, or not even having legs.
Same thing with the wheel. Some people's arms aren't capable of manipulating it.

If the only way that someone can race is with a controller and A/T, and they get out there and enjoy themselves, god bless em. 👍

Personally, I would love to see the day that a paraplegic qualifies for the world finals with a controller, and PD is forced to let them compete on the big stage with it. :D

Loving race C. Small track, Cars don’t get too spread out, always seem to be battling someone.

Is the 3 second pit penalty when entering? Must stay between the yellow lines?

Too much to think about with the gears in race C. Ive gone to auto and accepting finishing near last and losing my DR A. The car is too fun to abandon.
I have taken the opportunity to do auto but with no ABS. Adds an element of interest, more fun and skill than looking for gears and rpm while in no HUD VR.
Getting a tiny lockup but good corner is satisfying.

You can also get penalties on the way out, but the slower speed usually means you are ok there.

Race B has been absolute shambles for me. I've taken a more safe approach to my driving, not trying to drive more than what my ability allows, but I always seem to get punted three, five corners into a race. My SR is A but my DR has been on a steady decline.

So I noticed my previous time of 1:46:28 dropped down from 198th to around 450th within just 24 hours, which let's be honest, sucks! I also saw my favourite resident leader board alien @Nebuc72 also managed to stroll comfortably into the 1:45's so I hopped back into my rig and...

Shaved almost half a second to set a 1:45:80 and jump back into the top 100's :) Hoping this evening's racing goes better than yesterday lol.

That is sooooo awesome! (Seriously - don't let the following hide the fact I really think that's beyond cool.) And to think: I knew you when. Don't forget about us little guys, when you're hobnobbing with the rich and famous.

It's only when the track and car combo suit me. Did about 10 laps for Race A and almost 2 seconds slower than @Leon Kowalski and I am ashamed to even mention the gap to EVERYONE else in my Race C leaderboard 😂

Nowhere close to alien yet lol. Sometime slightly alienish (like a distant 3rd cousin or 4th gen ancestor) but in 1 out of 50 events, just like this week's Daytona 😀

I feel the same. My race C pace is shameful but race B suits me. However, my high 1:46 time is seriously lacking now. I need to work on that. Not sure where I can find a second thought to hit 1:45s. Well done on that!

Impressive! Might have to try stretch my legs....
