Got a third place last night in Mosport with the Star Mazda, this car is really fun. Next week there will be an event with it at Watkins Glen, I'll try to participate.

Thanks Patrocles! I think my iRating is climbing upward in a good way. Will be nice when I graduate and be able to see it directly. 👍

Yeah Dijital Majik I've looked at your racing history a few times and was amazed. You're definitely doing amazing work

livemusic, I was thinking bout giving that event a try as well it looks like it might be fun if I can tear myself away from ovals long enough to practice

Jav, I need to buy that track sometime to see for myself. Looks great in that screenshot btw

On a serious note tho I saw a thread at iRacing where they were talking bout using ATLAS to improve their times at Lime rock. You just need to save out yer telemetry and compare it to Jans' times.

I have been exploring Atlas recently. It is obviously amazing but pretty tough to get started with. The Lapfaster pdf that is linked to in the iRacing forum is very helpful to understanding the basics.

If no one has the link handy I can dig it up if need be.

I did see the excellent thread on using ATLAS at LRP, but I'm finding it tough to get my data to show up. I didn't get a sample workbook like the quick start pdf suggested, and tried making my own, but still no data showing. Going to have a good look at it when I get more time.

If you are getting in the low 59s at LRP then you are on track to be an Alien! At this point only other Aliens can help you! Check for them at the iRacing forum. good luck!

There seem to be an awfully high amount of people hitting 58s/low 59s (it's a little depressing to see just how many!).

Thanks dude, still have a lot, lot more to work on though. 👍

Guys I'm thinking of hosting an LMP/GT session at Limerock later on this evening, everyone here is welcome to join in!

Here's a video of my best lap with the Star Mazda at Mosport:

Still 1 sec off the top times but I didn't try to change the setup, I'm just using the low downforce one.

It was nice to see you in the Lotus today.

It was a lot of fun! I jumped in at the last moment with no practice or preparation! When it turned green I couldn't find 1st gear, then it hit me! I had this car setup for the h patern shidter...duh! Had a lot of fun with the guys at the back for 10 laps till I managed to f....it up!
I love the Lotus, just wish more people would run it, such a sweet sweet car to drive!

True,

To go fast you need three things:

1. learn the line
2. never plant the throttle if you don't know you can keep it there.
3. Details... to go really fast you need to work on the details in your driving to get that extra 0.1 in each corner.

Atleast thats my point of view to go fast :)

Hey guys! I'll be hosting an MX-5 session at Summit Piont today at arround 18GMT, that's 2PM USEST. It will be a 1hr free practice/15minutes quali/35 min race, everyone here is invited and welcome to join! The password for the session will be GTPFun .
I hope to see all of you guys there! Everyone has this track and car on the basic package so you won't need to buy anything!
Look for Javier Torres on the hosted session get in and have fun!!

Password: GTPFun

Server is up guys!

Thanks Jav for hosting 👍

Again I had tons of funs battling with "The Greeze". Man if everyone on iracing could drive like you Simon...! At one point, i was not afraid to be side by side in corners, and i cant say this when it's official races. That was awesome man 👍

Yeah that's a fun track to drive on. I practiced a tiny bit with the star mazda on that track. Looking at your stats I'd say you're hitting very nice times on it esp in that race you took 3rd place (been eyeballing your stats)

Yeah, that was the only decent race I had with the Star Mazda so far. In the other two I damaged my car in the first lap, which also damaged my times.

Yup, the key to going fast is planting the throttle where you have never planted it before. This does usually end up on the side of the track if you are still learning but once you are confident enough, full throttle everywhere that you possibly can is key to going fast.

I really wish more people raced the Ford Falcon. Its an absolute awesome car and hardly any of the races go official. I'd race the Australians, but my schedule don't really allow for that.

Excited for some Mustang action at Spa this week though.👍

Man I missed the racing at sebring last week on the Mustang, Couldn't get in an official race... Will definitely be doing a lot of Spa this week!! GT5 and iRacing!!

I don't think they get it... Smooth = fast.

If you know that once you put your foot on the throttle you are able to keep it there then you're not pushing hard enough. There has to be an element of risk when you transition to the throttle if you're going for a really fast lap time otherwise you'e just being conservative.

Don't get me wrong, being conservative isn't a bad thing. It helps with consistancy, reduces risk, etc. But when you're going for a really fast lap you do need to take some risk with your inputs.

I think it depends on the car. In the skip barber it tends to push you wide if you get on the gas too soon, and you lose a bunch of time as a result.

Interesting advice. I think that's my problem I'm super conservative. I still seem to be doing well and my iRating is steadily advancing. I don't ever really take any risks during a race. Just getting lucky in Legends due to everyone's elses incompetence cause they hitting up faster laps than me but they out of control, just wrecking each other like nobody's business. When I lap folks they are often in the pit lol

I worry though once I get promoted upwards in Ovals and continue to get into higher and higher splits I'll have to work harder to drive fast. Tonight I'll just try keeping my foot on that pedal in a practice session and see if I can hit faster times

Agreed with what Blake says. BUT for me that is only the case on the Old tyre model. I've found driving in the NTM cars that I need to be smoother with my steering and throttle/brake applications. Not completely road car smooth, but a considerable amount. Old Tyre Model is simply drive the wheels off it and make as many small corrections as possible. It works for all cars including the F1 car.

By feathering the throttle through/out of turns you loose time because you first of all unsettle the balance/geometry of the car through the turn.

Being smooth and hitting the gas only once is the fastest way out of a turn.
If it felt like you could go on it sooner then do that on the next lap.

This quote that i use is actually from a 3 -time F1 World Champion, Sir Jackie Stewart.

Also, just because you are smooth with your throttle doesn´t mean it´s conservative. Imo it´s the other way around.

I was wondering when you would drop that :)

I think those here are mainly agreeing with the intent (or side-effect) of the quote from Sir Stewart i.e. non-erratic use of the controls is generally better. I am sure there cases of racing lines that would benefit from some addition of throttle and keep in mind Stewart's context is RL where you can die getting it wrong.

Here is the throttle position for a :58s LRP run (obviously not me!).

:) it's true,

do you have a 58 time from a person you know is smooth?

its not as important for slower cars but F1 cars it's very important due to the narrow operating window on the limit.
the tire model we have now on the F1 is pretty unrealistic in certain areas.
Hopefully the NTM will fix this un the same philosophy as driving the lmp2 and GT2 Ford.
