Redmalloc is right on point, only think I would say other than that is use your spotter. Your spotter is your best friend!Be patient, patience pays off big time and is what ultimately defines your racecraft.

I've been working w/ mx5 cup car. Is there a specific track that I should be working on first? I'm so bad w/ the wheel haha. This is tough, but so much fun.

edit:

I also watched all the driving school videos.

I have so much to learn. Even just about taking a corner, breaking, etc.

For this week you should be practicing Okayama Short, for next week you should practice at Limerock Park Full.

The MX5 is really not an easy car to drive in my opinion. It has gone through some evolution recently with the "new tire model". It is better now than it was initially but still hard in some respects - and a real rude awaking from GT5 :scared: Far better to drive conservatively than push too hard.

Once you get tired driving, try exploring the forum. There is a thread in the rookie road racing forum that has tons more to learn :)

Amazing link, thanks so much for this post.

Whatever happened to Laguna Seca with the Rookie Solstice? Looks like they got rid of it. I got most of my wins there back in 2010 (11/39). They should atleast put it in the Mazda Cup. It's a staple track of the Miata Series' in real life.

It is in the advanced rookie, inRacingnews series. Solstice/Spec Racer Ford multi-class.

Agreed. I did my rookie racing at Laguna Seca and Lime Rock in the Solstice and loved every second of it. Especially at Laguna.

I reckon the rookie series should visit Okayama Short, Lime Rock Full, Laguna Seca and Summit Point Full. That would be awesome. 👍

I managed to bypass it and download it, now next problem sorry (Atleast I think it is) Everytime I try to update the new cars it closes the window when I press update and does nothing.

What browser are you using?

Same.

From a second look, the Solstice/Spec Ford does have it on the schedule, but only 1 out of 13 weeks? Madness!

But yeah, it should be on the Mazda Cup schedule. Laguna, Lime Rock, then Okayama Short.

What browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.)are you using?

When I press "update" I'm pretty sure it opens a new tab in my Firefox window which is blank. Does it close your entire browser?

Thanks I figured i'd spend a lot of time on test tracks.

I have a few questions about wheel setup.

Should I be using h shifter or paddle shifters?

Should I use the cluch? It seems to shift without it, it just revs for a second.

Anything else I should know?

This is an entire new experience since I've only ever used automatic + controller lol.

Cool! Welcome to the dark side!
:)

With the G27 I use the H-shifter with the clutch or the paddle shifters with the autoclutch depending on the car and how I feel at the time.
When you enter the track if you go to options you will see a box for 'autoclutch' to select/deselect. I think someone hear said that the game is setup so that it you use autoclutch, brake assist, acceleration assist, and/or driving line you are handicapped with slower laptimes using these assists(?). However, I am already so slow that using autoclutch is not an issue for me! LOL

I did a time trial last night w/ the Legends Ford 34 Coupe.

Hit the wall a couple of times even though I was taking it pretty easy.

Only managed a 16.920 on Lanier National Speedway.

I could see how much nicer the entry and exits are if you brake late or enter at the right place I just couldn't find/hit that point regularly.

My rookie oval rating went up to 2.53.

Internet Explorer, im guessing its crap . No it closes the window for the update page and refreshes the quick start guide screen.

Edit: Downloading firefox see if that helps..

Edit2: Its updating on firefox :D. (Thanks Nastra btw are you still going to continue FMSC or is that it fior GT5 series?)..... 1500mb so may take a while :P.

Sweet!
I think you will know my answer to this question as soon as you take iRacing's MX-5 out for a spin. ;)

Sadly, I don't think I can play GT5 anymore. Cockpit views, No ABS, full damage, long term consequences for crashing, cars that are genuinely difficult to control, and many more things that iRacing has but GT5 does not. The new team feature for doing endurance races sounds AWESOME!!!!!

Do you have a G27? If so, be sure to use the recommended settings:
Go to the iRacing member's homepage, then click FAQ in the top right corner, then click DRIVING CONTROLS, then click "Logitech Wheel/Pedal Settings".

To change the wheel's settings you will need the Logitech Profiler, which can be found here:
http://www.logitech.com/en-us/441/5184
Then go to "Downloads" and choose your operating system (windows vista).

Not sure Jav hope so and no Nastra only got my trusty DFGT will that be good enough for iRacing?

So w/ MX-5 cup on Okayama Short my times seem to be right around 1.06

The problem is consistency. I only get those times like one time out of five because of all my incidents =\.

This wheel is tough!

Are there any tricks for learning to be consistent? No sense even working on my lap times until I can stay out of the dirt.

Hey Josh
No tricks, just practice and patience.
Lots of practice sessions first, then try the TT's to confirm consistancy, then take on everyone else.
For me the big thing is to always stay calm - angry=slow
You'll get there
👍

Go SLLLLLLOOOOOOOWWWWWWW.

It doesn't matter if you are doing 1:20 laps, just start very very slow, learn the track and *gradually* increase your speed. You need to learn the proper racing line too, so turn on that aid.

Smoothness and consistency will come, but you can't jump in head first.

I'm super excited about this next round of updates.

The thought of a team of drivers swapping through a 24hrs has me giggling like a school girl.

Man that's gonna be awesome! We better start getting a GPLanet team ready! I'm signing up on a Riley DP league wich is going to use drivers swap so gonna be needing a teamate! If anyone's interested let me know and I'll post up the details. Hopefully we can get a few teams to compete!

Would be perfect for me, because the only leagues I'm lined up with as far as time zone goes is Australia/NZ. So I could finally get with some US leagues and still participate in races. Depending on how soon this next update comes out I'll consider joining that league, but I need to wait and see how my cockpit build is going to go, I'll probably be less than functional for a few weeks at least.

Well im really confused ive done all of the updates yet every time I log in on iRacing it directs me to the update page only to tell me ive done all the updates .

"here currently is nothing for you to update. You may be seeing this page because you own a pre-order that is not available for download at this time" Thats what the page says then I go through the rest to the finish and click finish and it still directs me back there...

Also the pages on configuring your hardware and calibrating your hardware just load blank pages, this is on firefox.

Im going to join iracing when I get back home. Whats the first thing I should do after downloading? I know (or pretty sure) my laptops going to be running at low settings. Should I get that worked out first or is there some important reading or something I should do first? Thanks for any help.

Maybe try contacting iRacing's support. I haven't had to use them yet, but I have heard they are helpful:tup:

First thing to do is probably look over the sporting code and some other reads about the iRacing set-up as far as SR, iRating, incident factors, etc. Can't remember what tab this is on screen, but its all under the same one I believe. Then go into a test session with whatever car or track you want to get your graphics and wheel settings setup. I suggest setting your steering dampening to 0 and keep your fps at or above 60. For whatever reason, iRacing below 60 fps can start to stutter. Also if your having trouble with wheel settings, there is a thread in the forum with settings for all different kinds of wheels. This is what I used to get my G25 setup with.

Beyond that, just practice. Before entering a race, make sure you can run consistent laptimes and good lines around the track. Don't worry about speed, just consistency and staying on track. Use the spotter and the relative timing black box to be aware of others and all should be fine.

Above all, have fun. This sim is awesome. Spec and mixed class racing at its finest.

Something that many rookies bypass/ignore is the iRacing Driving School videos. Watch those videos! They explain so much about what is needed to be a good iRacer.

Starting to have withdrawls. Ever since I set up my triple projector setup (and one of the projectors go bad) and now rebuilding the cockpit it's been about 3 weeks since I've raced. :(

I watched those on YouTube, they're excellent little videos, anybody that plays any decent racing game/sim, not just Iracing should seriously watch them.
