Did anyone read Rick Reilly's 'piece' on the pace of baseball over at ESPN? It was quite infuriating to me.

Earlier today, I saw how the Chicago White Sox owned the Texas Rangers 19-2 in Chicago. I always feel a bit strange when it's TEXAS losing by a big margin. It is usually Texas beating the brains out of teams with a few swings of the bat. This one HAD to be bad for the Rangers. No worries, though... because they're miles ahead of .500 (unlike my Astros) and a good bit ahead in their division (again, unlike my Astros).

Enjoy Independence Day baseball! The real fireworks will be in the ballpark once balls are getting smacked for base hits and homers. So enjoy your baseball, GTP!

Seven straight losses now for the Astros, and I think nine straight road losses now. We lost 6-4 today. I probably won't even bother watching tomorrow night's game whether or not we get swept in two straight series. No fireworks in the Astros' lineup, not even any hope of winning. It won't get any better any time soon after the All-Star Break. After the All-Star Break, it's at San Francisco (3), at San Diego (4), and at R1600Turbo's Arizona (3) boys.

The failing continues in H-Town. I'm sure your team(s) did [much] better today, right?

I think I can help. Here is what Rick Reilly typed up. I at least hope this is what is up for discussion. If not, nevermind this post:

I guess now is the time to share thoughts now that I've provided this. So... thoughts?

The guy is an idiot who clearly has no interest in watching the game and has clearly never actually played the game at any sort of competitive level. Yes baseball games are long and yes there are things that seem unreasonable. But that's baseball. It's a slow game, it's been that way for 100+ years and because people are developing the attention spans of a flea doesn't mean baseball should have to change their ways.

Does he realize how much mental focus and concentration goes into every single pitch. God the best in the world do it 3 in every 10 times and that's with multiple swings per at bat. He has a problem with those stepping out to compose themselves or take a practice swings but I don't see him writing an article on golf. Somehow in golf it is perfectly acceptable to take many practice swings and think about each and every shot and that is with a stationary ball not one moving at nearly 100 mph.

I think every baseball fan would agree it can be dull at times when watching on tv but the game is meant to be watched live. When your at a game it's a day out at the park with a beer and a hot dog and it's a relaxing, good time. Baseball shouldn't change the game because a few people don't like the 30 seconds per pitch which in reality really isn't that long. I'm not really sure what he was trying to achieve with that article.

He doesn't appreciate baseball. He's probably one of those people who is absolutely enraged by afternoon traffic. He probably also spends a few grand a year on Starbucks and drives an Audi. He's an instant gratification fiend and doesn't appreciate the little things. I honestly wonder if he ever played baseball in his life. I would venture to say no.

Mets lost to Philadelphia as Cliff Lee FINALLY won a game.

Houston loses to Pittsburgh 6-4 and apparently then officially declares enough is enough, sending Carlos Lee to Miami for Matt Dominguez and Rob Rasmussen.

Rick is a moron, and like most people on ESPN don't know anything about Baseball. Its a network that only cares about Basketball and Football.

Giants have had a thing the past few years that they can't win in Washington, like at all.. Well and we've been absolute **** on the road lately.

I'm not really a baseball guy myself, but even I couldn't help but laugh at Rick Reilly's whining. Even I know about what makes baseball so unique and what really makes it such a great sport. Having such deep resumé and such honors doesn't mean all of your comments are smart or useful. What he typed up is honestly his opinion, but it doesn't mean we have to like it. Part of "ESPN" is the E- Entertainment (ESPN stands for "Entertainment and Sports Programming Network"). Well, that piece on the pace of baseball was anything but entertaining. Tell the umpire to eject Rick Reilly out of the game.

I'd wonder what Rick Reilly would write about cricket...

 If he cant stand baseball, he would robably commit suicide watching a test match (for the uninitiated, a cricket test lasts 5 days and may not produce a result).
I also get the feeling ths guy would watch a game of soccer/football and complain that there werent enough goals scored.

Although I have only been following baseball in earnest for a few years, I can understand and appreciate the time taken between pitches, but the massive delays between innings can be a bit much - the only players that could be excused for taking a minute would be the lsat man out/baserunners and the leadoff guy.

EDIT: Watching the KC/TOR game on TV - it's a struggle listening to Rex Hudler after playing MLB the Show on PS3

So, John, we stole your slugger. Can't believe how bad Gaby Sanchez is getting it right now. Last year he was an all star. This year he gets thrown in AAA, comes back, hits a game tying homer, then gets optioned back to the minors again. Lol. Poor guy. Wonder what the heck is going on since his contact stinks like sour ropa vieja this season.

All I know is... Carlos Lee provided solid service for my Astros. I wish him the best with his new team. I think we're done with Miami for the season, so I don't think we'll have to worry about him hammering a former team. My best Astros memory with Carlos Lee: on the night Craig Biggio hit #3000, Carlos Lee was the hero who hit a walk-off Grand Slam in extra innings to beat the Colorado Rockies.

Enjoy el caballo, Miami. :(

Jason Kubel in the last 2 games = 2 home runs including one grand slam. 7 total RBI's.

Edit: Had a couple chances that we screwed, now we can't seem to hit anything.

Edit 2: Un:censored: believable. :yuck:

Swept by the Padres. REALLY!?!?!?!?

Texas got swept for the first time since last year. Maybe we'll be able to win tonight and gain a game.

Darvish and Freese are the Final Vote players. No surprise about Darvish.

I didn't see last night's game since I figured my Astros would lose. And we did- 2-0. Bud Norris lost for HOU while Karstens won for PIT. I know D-Backs fans were upset getting swept by the Padres, but look at us- we got swept by the NL Central's last-place Cubs. If we lose tonight vs. Milwaukee and if the Cubs win at the Mets, WE will be in last place in the NL Central! And no way in Heaven or Hell do I want to see the Astros return to their 2011 form.

These are all the final series before the All-Star Break, so good luck to all of your team(s) in all of this weekend's series- including Yankees at Red Sox.

The 11AM EST start time against the Nats the other day is the dumbest thing ever. That's an 8 AM start, that means the players were at the park as early as 4AM on the second day of a road trip. Terrible scheduling.

Can't wait for the break... Give our guys a rest, we've been freakin' terrible on the road lately. Bullpen blowing up.. Starting pitching blowing up. Bochy being a bone-head (not unusual). Hitting has been rock solid all year until RISP which we've been unlucky mostly. Ugh.

Prosthetic

In professional sports you are never aware of what time it is. You just try to get as much sleep as possible before the next game. You obviously have not played in any pro/junior sports before. It's not bad scheduling. It's baseball.

Umm that would be incredibly incorrect. Guys get in routines and ever wonder why baseball keeps track of day and night games? The difference is more the time than the lighting since most parks stay naturally lit until well into the night.

Time plays a massive factor and the constant changing of schedules is incredibly difficult for a massive number of pro athletes who prefer routine. Some handle it better than others but pro athletes are creatures of habit more than your average person and when that routine is messed with it really screws some guys up.

When a team flies in at 2 am and doesn't get to sleep until 4 am it's extremely different than the home team who was asleep at 11 pm even if both teams are getting 8-9 hours of sleep.

Like CMV said, they probably had less then 8 hours of sleep over the course of 2 days.

Its not 'baseball'.. No Game should start at noon, yet alone 8AM in one teams time zone. Your internally clock and sleep catch up doesn't happen in one day.

As I said, neither of you have played a professional sport and haven't a clue how grueling it is, especially minor league baseball. If you can't perform in under less than favorable conditions, you won't make it very far. It is baseball.
