Major League Baseball: 2014 Season

Even with all the insanity of the new season of college football, plenty of Major League Baseball teams are still trying to close out the 2014 season. So what did my Houston Astros do? Well... we blanked the Texas Rangers 2-0 here in Houston. The Houston Astros clinched the Silver Boot for this season after getting smashed last night, but we managed to get another cool little win against the boys from Arlington, TX. Our winning pitcher was Scott Feldman, who had himself a three-hit shutout. Losing for the Texas Rangers was Phil Klein. Klein is now 0-2 on the season. Game 4 of 4 of this series is tomorrow afternoon. Oh, and by the way... this was our 58th win of the season- five away from the magical 63-win challenge from a promotion made earlier this season.

Here's what I posted on Facebook:

"The Houston Astros won their 58th game of the 2014 season with a 2-0 victory over the Texas Rangers. They are five wins away from matching (or even bettering) the 63-win challenge set forth in that promotion by Gallery Furniture. The Astros have now won more games than they've won the past three seasons. For reference: they won 51 games in 2013 debuting in the American League, 55 games in 2012 in their final National League season, and 56 games in 2011. Here's hoping the Astros turned the corner for good."

We still stink, but we just stink a bit less this season. I can only hope for not having another 100-loss season. Astros NEVER had 100 losses prior to 2011- this for a franchise that dates back to 1962. We debuted [as the Houston Colt .45s] the same year the New York Mets.

Elsewhere...

* My Astros won 2-0 today at home. Also winning 2-0 at home was Canada's team- the Toronto Blue Jays defeating the visiting New York Yankees. Drew Hutchison won for TOR along with a Save from Aaron Sanchez. Michael Pineda lost for the Yanks.

* The Yankees lost; how did the other New York team do? The Mets also failed today. Their pounding headache came in the form of a 7-2 beating at Citi Field by the visiting Philadelphia Phillies. Jerome Williams won for PHI, and Bartolo Colon was the loser for NYM.

* NL Central action was in vogue in Pittsburgh as the Pirates hosted the Cincinnati Reds. PIT won the game 3-2. It was Vance Worley who got the win for the Pittsburgh Pirates along with a Save from ex-Astro Mark Melancon. Losing for Cincy was Alfredo Simon.

* Another 3-2 result was in Baltimore as the Baltimore Orioles defended home turf against the Minnesota Twins. Winning for Baltimore was Andrew Miller along with a Save from Zach Britton. Jared Burton lost for Minnesota.

* It was 4-0 in Atlanta as the Miami Marlins took down the Atlanta Braves. Jarred Cosart improved to 3-1 by winning for MIA. Sadly, Aaron Harang was the loser for ATL.

* TOUCHDOWN Rays! With college football back in session, it's nice to say the Tampa Bay Rays took it to the house by winning at home 7-0 against Boston. Winning for the Rays was Jake Odorizzi, and losing for the Red Sox was Allen Webster.

* Colorado, who are sick and tired are losing, got themselves a 2-0 win at the Arizona Diamondbacks. Both COL scores were solo homers. The Rockies have the worst record in baseball as they got their 54th win of the season. They are now 54-81. Arizona's fail tonight drops them to 56-79. Tyler Matzek was the COL winning pitcher along with a Save from former Astro LaTroy Hawkins. Losing on the ARI side was Vidal Nuño.

Congratulations to all other winners from Saturday.

The Tigers split a doubleheader with the White Sox today. The first game was a 6-3 loss, but the second game was an 8-4 win.

We took three out of four in this TEX at HOU series with a 3-2 victory today. Astros picked up their 59th win of the season to improve to 59-79. The win went to Jose Veras along with a Save from Chad Qualls (whom I thought was shipped off to Detroit or something). It was a No Decision for HOU's starting pitcher Dallas Keuchel. Neal Cotts was the loser for TEX.

Up next for the Astros... a quick two-game set at home followed by- wait for it... LATE GAMES! After a day off for Labor Day, we're hosting Patrick's Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim starting this Tuesday for two here in H-Town. Now the late games. We'll likely be Oakland's b:censored:es as we take on the Athletics in Oakland for this three-game weekend set (yay...). After that, we're at the Pacific Northwest's only Major League Baseball team- the Seattle Mariners for a three-game set. Seattle's battling for a Wild Card spot, so I'm sure they'll bring their very best to try to stay in the hunt. We're then going to Anaheim for two at the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim after the at Seattle series. Yeah- this will NOT be easy, as if anything other than beat downs are handed to the Astros.

Congratulations to all other Sunday winners. Hope your team(s) finished August 2014 with a win.

So the Reds decided to actually WIN a 1 run game today after dropping the first two games by 1 run against the Pirates.

Meanwhile, ex-Red Adam Dunn was traded from the White Sox to the A's, and current (though not anymore) Red Jonathan Broxton got traded to the Brew Crew. Our season is over anyway. No way we're doing anything at 5 games under .500. Unfortunately, likely two of our starting pitchers will also be traded before the end of the season or in the offseason as we can't afford to keep them with Votto and Phillip's (and to an extent Bailey's) contracts.

You know, I'm literally stunned the Astros let go of Bo Porter. Sports is often times a "what have you done for me lately?" deal. You don't perform; you don't stay. Conversely, with the Astros doing much better than they have in the past three seasons, maybe this is a chance for the Astros to keep on a winning clip by finding a manager that can really push the Astros back to relevance and back to being a winner. Maybe the Astros want someone who may give an attitude and a character more like what Bill O'Brien is bringing to the NFL's Houston Texans.

Again- the Astros have never been seriously relevant the past few years. Last real relevant team was the improbable 2005 Houston Astros- going to the World Series after such a mostly horrible regular season. I do wish Bo Porter well wherever he goes. 2014 is a lost cause and has been for a while. Maybe this will help improve the "team of the future" aspect of the Astros moving ahead.

I think that even a top tier manager would struggle there since the whole farm team was gutted along with losing the big names. Porter was doing a good job with what he had to work with in my opinion.

Just wrapped up...History made just now... the Philadelphia Phillies just put together a combined no-hitter at the Atlanta Braves. PHI won 7-0. It's the 12th no-hitter in franchise history and the first combined no-hitter in their history. Congratulations to the Phillies.

A's acquire Adam Dunn... Not sure if good or bad, since he's only hitting .220
Jason Hammel needs another good outing today if we're even going to have a shot at the AL West.

Also hoping the Giants will come through and smash the Rockies.

The Tigers just destroyed the Cleveland Indians with a 12-1 victory. As of now, the Tigers hold the second AL wild card spot.

This two-game home series with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim starts with an 8-3 victory for the Houston Astros. This is the first game where Bo Porter isn't the Astros' coach. Interim coach Tom Lawless gets his first win as Astros' coach. The first time I followed the score, I heard we were leading 5-0 in the Middle of the 4th. We are now in the 60-win club. MLB Network says we're on pace to win 69 games to close out the 2014 season. I think our record is now... 60-79 I believe.

Congratulations to Tuesday's other winners, including (but not limited to) Kansas City at home, the Chicago Cubs at home, AnthonyD1993's Tigers on the road, and Blitz24's Mets on the road.

It's like the A's have totally lost interest in baseball.

"Hey Bob, how fast do you think we can throw away a playoff seed? I need to hit the golf course"

"I don't know. Billy just traded for someone with a .220 BA so we're trying. As long as I can convince Stephen to keep having horrid at-bats we should be fine. And with you out for now, Coco, I think it's looking better each day. October 2nd, I'll see you in Carmel?"

Just keep throwing Sonny Gray out there. Not that he's going to reach any exhaustion or anything. Put Pomeranz in the rotation and move Gray to long relief.

I won't lie- I turned off the game and then later found out that the Tigers won. Now if only KC would start losing...

I think they should go one further and move Kazmir to the bullpen as well, and move Jesse Chavez back up to a starting spot. Lester seems alright (no run support), Samarzidja and Hammel are alright too. It's just the two "real" A's that are having issues.

And why is Sogard in the lineup? He should be a Defensive Sub or possibly a pinch runner. That's it. Callaspo is a minor liability at 2nd, but at least he can hit the ball.

The second game in this quick two-game LAA at HOU swing ends up being a 4-1 victory for the Houston Astros. We're not going to be involved with the Angels again until later in this upcoming road trip, when we'll have two matches in Anaheim against the Angels. The Astros led 2-1 for a good bit of the game. The eventual deathblow was a two-run jack in the Bottom of the 8th with José Altuve on 3rd Base following a balk call on LAA. More and more, Chris Carter is starting to really become a hero for the Astros. So we picked up our 61st win of the season. And so far- Tim Lawless is unbeaten as Astros' coach. The Houston Astros have figured out the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. But in our upcoming road trip, we have yet to figure out the other AL California team- the Oakland Athletics. So that's our next series opponent. OAK at HOU starting on Friday. Here's the setup for our upcoming road trip:

We're at Oakland to play starting this Friday night for a three-game weekend series. Then, it's off to beautiful Seattle for a three-game set there after taking next Thursday off. And finally, the road trip concludes in Anaheim when we play the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in their house for three.

Congratulations to all other winners from Wednesday, including the Washington Nationals winning that marathon of a game at the Los Angeles Dodgers in 14 innings.

The Tigers won 11-4 with a 7 run 11th inning. Yes, I said 7 runs in extra innings. As of my post, the A's, Tigers, and Mariners are separated by three games which is important to note. This is becuse the three teams are currently the top three teams in the AL Wild card race.

Kevin Towers is being replaced! Yay! About damn time...

Edit: Ron Washington has resigned his position as the Rangers manager.

Ron Washington resigned earlier today. With the Texas Rangers in turmoil right now, I wish Ron the best moving forward.

Good luck to all of your team(s) this weekend.

Yay for late games! So the Oakland Athletics are hosting my Houston Astros for a three-game weekend set. This HOU at OAK series starts with a 4-3 victory by the Astros. We picked up win No. 62. The Houston Astros Baseball Club is now 62-79 on the season. And the biggest surprise? Five-game winning streak. The Astros' next win will meet that 63-win promotional challenge. Not only that, but the next Astros win will snap our string of three successive seasons with 100+ losses.

Congratulations to all other Friday winners, including Milwaukee snapping their 9-game losing streak.

The Astros failed today by the same score as the Friday game. OAK won 4-3. So we got a Rubber Game for this HOU at OAK series tomorrow afternoon.

Congratulations to the other winners from Saturday.
