The Canadian Grand Prix gets underway in just over 24 hours. The teams have already arrived and begun setting up for the first of two back to back races in the North American continent.

Ferrari and Michael Schumacher are looking for their 7th win of the season, and their 3rd in a row in Canada. Rubens will be looking to avoid a repeat of last year which saw him exchange his front wing for some paint from Alonso's Renault.

Renault are sporting a new engine that they hope will provide more top end power. On a circuit where Michael's fastest straight line speed last year was around the 350km/h mark, that may prove crucial, given the Renault's generally impressive performance in slower turns.

BAR will also be sporting some engine refinements, Honda continuing to further their F1 program following the sudden surge of form from the British based team. Button will be hoping to put the Honda's speed to good use, whilst Sato will be looking to finish for the first time in 2 races, and avoid any controversy for the first time in two races as well.

McLaren will be hoping to finish as they await the race launch of their promising new MP4-19B. Insiders were apparently so optimistic about the car they wanted to have it ready for racing in Canada and the US, but the car now looks set to debut in France in July.

Williams will be hoping for a better performance than their rather dismal Nurburgring showing. The BMW boasts power aplenty, and with reasonable reliability, Canada may give them a chance to shine as they did last year.

Sauber will no doubt be fuelling their cars heavily and continuing their focus on reliability and consistency with the two stop strategy that has served them well so far and seen them rise to 5th place on the ladder.

Jaguar's future looks more uncertain as HSBC looks to pull their funding, which accounts for some $30 million of Jaguar's budget. The Austrian owner of Red Bull is tipped to pick up the team. Their testing pace at Silverstone recently was promising however.

Jordan and Minardi will be hoping for high attrition ala Monaco to give them a shot at some world championship points.

Thus is the state of play, and here's the place to post as the weekend goes on.

I'm looking forward to this race, then even more so to the US Gp. I'm hoping Williams will be able to put on a show and get there act together. It should be a good race but I'm pretty confident (unfortunatly) that Ferrari will take the win.

This weekend Ferrari are using a new optimised fuel which will give them increased fuel economy, which will give them an advantage high speed circuits like Canada and Indianapolis.

Good on Ferrari for being so dominant but really, can't the other teams catch up, it's making the racing (for first) boring.

Its not Ferrari's fault that Williams and McLaren cant use their budgets as effectively as the Scarlet boys. As Paul Stoddard pointed out a while ago, his team has run more laps in GP's this year then McLaren, and his team budget is less then what Ron Dennis's mobile home costs.

I want rain!! It is about time we had a wet race. Other then that, I expect Williams to be more competitve this weekend then previous races as they have done well at Montreal in the past.

I'd say that racing in the rain won't prove anything except Micheals dominance. Unless Juan tries a muppet move in the wet and ruins Micheals race (we can only hope).

Yes I specifically mention JPM as he is the only one with the balls to try something crazy in the wet. Except Sato but he's just insane.

DC is also very good in the rain watch for him if it does

canada is a killer on brakes.....expect a few to retire with brake problems of soughts

Actually, although I'm a McLaren fan, I can only hope they finish the Canadian and US GPs... the car has been less than reliable in the season and being that these two North-American races are so hard on the cars, I see no reason why they shopuld even finish, specially since although the MP4-19B is on the way, the car that will be on Sunday has nothing different from the last ones.

Hopefuly Sato will do something... I really have to say F1 has been less fun than last year. This year all the fun is in who's fighting for 3rd and 4th position, since 1st is a bit predictable. Although I don't mean to insult any racers, I admire Sato's daring and aggresiveness on the racetrack, as Senna did in his day. At least he isn't dying because Schumi is already going to be the world champion this year again... he's actually racing and giving it all he's got. Monty also does this well, but we haven't seen much results during this season, unfortunately.

I hope for rain on Sunday... specially since we haven't seen any this year, except for 10 minutes in Australia. But even though Schumi is the "rain man", remember how he spun off in the Brazilian GP last year... Nevertheless, it seems rain will be very unlikely. Schumi has won this race 6 times already, and I really don't see any reason why he shouldn't win again.

One of my co-workers won passes from BMW... he's going to meet Monty and Ralf tomorrow in the paddock... may I use the word Bastige? :grumpy:. Anyway, JV's absence from the grid, Bernies high demands to keep Canada's GP on the calendar or Ferrari's dominance until now didn't hurt the event much, everything is already sold out.

This weekend is just crazy, you're able to see more Lambos and Ferrari on the street in one day than for the rest of the year.

Yeah, you forgot to mention 6 other cars going off at that same corner during the race. It was the streaming water, same thing that makes the dip at Road Atlanta hard to handle in the rain.

I'm just hoping the last four at the finish line aren't yellow and green, if you know what I mean. Ferrari is going to win this year's cup so I'm just gonna root for the under dog, how shocked would you be if a Jordon or a Minardi podiumed?

may I use the word Bastige?

You may, I shall also use it....Bastige! I really want to get some tickets to the Aussie GP in the next couple of seasons, I've never seen an F1 race from the track so I really want to experiance it.

One thing I don't like is the fact that the GP and 24 Hours of Le Mans take place this weekend. I love Formula One but the 24 Hours of Le Mans only occurs once a year.

Canada would be interesting indeed if it rained. I hope that engine for Renault really does help their overall top speed. They're fast already though what with the superior aerodynamics of the cars.

I wish the USGP would get here quicker! I can't wait for it.

Thank you Firestarter, amen.

We've had rain at a few events, never on the race itself. Hell it rained on Sunday morning in Bahrain :embarrassed: The current weather forecast shows nothing till Monday, but that may change soon enough.

I don't think you can commend Sato for some of his passing attempts, even if David Richards of BAR came out and defended him. I believe most people agree the Barrichello incident was amateur, and hitting the pit lane speed limiter whilst dealing with Trulli? That's just accidental nerves each time, he's got to calm down in the cockpit and not get overanxious or overexcited.

Most people seem to be pegging Williams for a better performance. After Montoya emerged from his car at the Nurburgring he initially refused to partake in any post-race interviews. He was also quoted as reasoning that to Sam Michael with "What am I supposed to tell them? That the car's ****?". The catastrophic brake failure at Spain also has me wondering whether their brakes will last the distance.

Go Jenson! *does little dance* ;)

I think it's fairly certain to say that Ferrari are going to win this year, and there is a very good chance they will win the next GP, so i take my attention away from them and focus on who will get second and third as that is often where most of the racing takes place, while our friend mr Schumacher disapears of into the distance.

The fact that Ferrari are way ahead of everyone else in terms of.. well, almost everything is impressive. Often it doesn't make for entertaining viewing though. :)

Yes....... Ok....... DC stays out in the pouring rain with slick tyres on. He loses minutes per lap. How does that make him good in the rain?

Does Micheline have a good intermediate-wet tyre yet?

GO THE RED!!!

Sato, IMO, makes alot of really muppet moves. I mean what the hell was that, diving down on Barrichello from 20 metres away! And Monaco, did his team tell him to keep going with that engine to help Jenson or was he just continuing for the sake of it? It either show immaturity of the team or of Sato!

If Montoya thinks the Williams car is **** I would like to hear him talk about the current McLaren car. Unless the "B" car is better Montoya wouldn't be happy:ouch:! Since Gilles is such a hard circuit on brakes it would be interesting to see what happens with brakes.

I'm also wondering why are McLaren not putting the "B" car into action, I mean it can't be any worse than what they have now can it?

I think they'd rather take their time and do things properly, not have it marred by rushing it out and having a bad launch. A lot is riding on it.

Montoya was apparently not feeling too confident about his move to McLaren last I heard, I wonder if the B can change things.

Well I hope BAR have a good race, I think they could be both in the top 5 with JB in second as long as they have no more techy engine problems, But it's probubly too early to start hoping for wins.
At least they are pushing Ferrari even if it's only a little bit...

(i like the new setup)

As the end of the first practice session draws near, it's Ferrari 1 and 2, but Anthony Davidson is pretty close once again.

just watching the first practice at the moment, looks nice 2 ferraris the 2 BAR then nothing ;)
mclaren even switched back to an old engine spec hoping that won´t go up in smoke - they are 13th & 14th right now - might be able to stand a chace this time...

Well Sato looks strong taking 1st in the 2nd practice session, 2nd is Alonso, 3rd M. Schumacher and 4th Raikkonen!

It looks like being a more competative weekend. But I shudder when I see JPM in 20th! He only did 6 laps but still, he was the previous lap record holder.

Anyway go BAR and Renault!

I'm curious as to how Schumacher can hit a wall and get away with only a slowly deflating tyre. What the hell are these Ferraris actually made of?

Ok so it was only a graze :P

Trulli and Alonso look to have some stunning pace in the Renaults, finishing 1st and 2nd respectively in the second practice session this morning. Times have tumbled a further second and a half compared to yesterday. Button finally eclipsed Sato to be 3rd, with Montoya finding some pace in the Williams for 5th, just ahead of Michael Schumacher. Ralf continues to languish in 12th however. Barrichello is 9th, the Ferraris split by the McLaren pair of Raikkonen and Coulthard. Rubens was the slowest runner under the 1'14 mark.

1 and a half hours till pre-qual... I think I'll choose sleep.

I did however check the TV guide and coverage begins at 2:15am, and the race at 2:30 officially, so perhaps we'll actually get a live telecast.

Too bad for Sato,he was on a good lap.As i said 2 weeks ago,he wants too much, too eager. But anyway,R.Schumacher had a fantastic lap, deserves pole although Button was so close(0.066 sec.).Promises to be an exiting race tomorrow as i think that the Ferrari's race pace is faster then the rest so M.Schumacher will have to make his way thru 5 other guys and that won't be easy.

Yep, poor Sato, also very bad mistakes from Montoya and Schumacher. In fact the actual qualification format can be very interesting to watch, when the result isn't as expected, and it was funny to watch Glock drifting in the first session. It's not exactly the one I'd like to see in front, but it's well deserved. There will be a lot of action in the first chicane tomorrow, and hopefully an exciting race! :D

Agreed!

This race promises to be great!
I cant belive my dad dint get any tickets for me... :( guess his contacts where busy with others...

Hey did any of you go down on cressent street. Its allwayz pretty nice to go there during GP time.

Well anywayz... Lets hope for a good one.

btw Jpmontoya did you whatch rds? (t'est tu francais?) The interview they did with Frank williams and others! heck frank seems pretty optimistic about Jacques! :D

poor Frank... he really looks beat up...

Final grid seems nice. Good for Ralf on pole. NIce to see Klien make it to the top 10 as well. Schumi on 6th? Guess he'll go for the 2-stop strategy and leave everyone 20 secs behind. Nice to see both McLarens as well, although I'm not as optimistic of seeing both of them on the finish line.

At least it seems that with Schumi in 6th place and Barrichello in 7th (never in front of Michael!) we'll see a bit of racing going on. We'll see after the checkered flag goes down.

now taking the bets.

who else thinks Schumi (the red one) will win after all?

1. michael 2. ralf 3. jenson button
