Your lucky we in the UK have to wait until a few days more as ours are out on April 1st. :(

Something I am glad about.

At least most people here a reading from the same page.

I'll get a good impression of what matters to me most from here, not ign or ISR who I like but probably won't get a review until October.

Maybe posted already, but he doesn't seem to like the physics.
The sway is certainly still there, though it wasn't my largest problem with the handling in shift1. (that would be the feedback around corners)

Also again, that is one hell of a Neo Geo collection. There's a fair chance that it's worth more than my car.

Shift 1 had a similar effect. I found it to go away for the most part if I turned the FFB strength down. At high FFB it just wasn't possible to hold the wheel completely straight against any bump, and it would oscillate around the centre in a kind of limited tank-slapper effect. If you turned the FFB down to the point that the wheel wasn't fighting out of your hands it wasn't a problem.

Note also, that we do have caster settings on the suspensions of the cars now too. Some of that may be a characteristic of the car settings, and may be able to be tuned out.

On another note, that Suzuka looks very nice to me.

He didn't say he doesn't like the physics. More that the standard wheel settings are not great.

His face tells me he doesn't like the physics.

Embargo, no demo. I smell a rat.

Why can't they get a damn wheel dialled in.
Disappointed.

Lol. How about his face tells me he doesn't like that he has a copy of the game in his hands but he's hamstrung by EA's ridiculous information management program that forces him to smuggle stuff to us one 30 second clip at a time. I suspect he's also got a limit of one clip a day or something too, or else the obvious solution would have been to post a whole race as 10 sequential clips. That'd make me unhappy...

Like in PC sims standard wheel settings aren't optimized, you need to work a couple of days to find the best configuration. I think some steering deadzone could help and maybe completely fix the floaty feeling. The good thing now is we don't need to worry about the crazy sliding and the insane bump bug. The floating could be fixed with a good setting.

video is strange, he drives awful at first but then he starts driving better and better and better. Why does the wheel wiggle?

That Nurb looks awesome. Very atmospheric, gives you a good sense of the space that it's in.

The driving poorly then getting better could be anything. It could be cold tyres warming up. He may not know the track very well. He may not know the car very well.

Part of me thinks that the floaty feeling is enhanced by the way they handle the camera. You know how GT5 shakes the whole camera when you go over bumps and it makes everyone seasick? Shift keeps the track and surroundings smooth and moves the car, which gives it an eerie floating look. It's just not what we're used to seeing from cameras that are "attached" to the car, so our brains interpret that as the car not responding to the bumps that we know are there.

And that's how it works in reallife, your view stays stable to the road because you eyes are focused. Your head+body shakes up and down in the car though. Shift does it just right :)

^ from 2.33 he used the helment cam. It suggest you the apex turning in the direction of the corner and braking points with the blur effect, good.

Yes and I completely hate that.

I don't think it's because of the cam, it really seems a steering deadzone issue to me and it could be fixed adding a 5% deadzone.

^ yes it's the deadzone, I've the driving force gt and in shift 1 you could remove that sense of floating "tuning" the wheel. They guy from vvv always run the wheel "plug and play" and except for gt5 it always sucks with tons of lag in inputs in every game.. WRC was the worst and he keep playing with that setting.. dont' know why. However that guy from vvv said that dirt 2 was the best rally game out there.. i don't know how people can trust him in judging the physic. Personally i don't give a **** about what he thinks or tell.. just watch it cause he has some footage of the game. Just the facts he's using the bumper cam in the game with the best cockpit ever makes me hate him.

Well, it says in the description of the video that he's using a pad. Dunno that you can add a deadzone to a pad. Dunno that you'd want to add a deadzone to a pad.

Just while we're here, 5% is a massive deadzone on a 900 degree wheel. You'd want more like 1% or 2%. But what you say is still true, adding a deadzone might help with a wheel (if he was using one).

yes, i was speaking about the team vvv video with the g27, not the video above of the porsche. However if i rember well you can add deadzone also to the controller in shift 1. Not sure.

I can't remember exactly but I think you can add deadzone to controllers too. Anyway yes it was refered to vvv's video and 5% is just a random value I've said.. Maybe 1 or 2 % deadzone is enough, I don't know yet. Will be interesting compare FFB settings between users.

With Shift 1 with my 180º wheel I used:
  • 5% dead-zone and
  • 25% steering sensitivity.

With a DFGT (or similar) I think that a
  • 360º maximum steering lock,
  • 2% deadzone, (or less, the minimum amount needed to battle FFB swaying on the straights)
  • 50% steering sensitivity
would be ideal.

About tweaking wheel settings... I always tweak wheel setting in every game, PC, PS2 or PS3. That includes Shift, Dirt 2, GT5 (change to simulation mode and slightly increased the FFB) and the various "serious" sim-racing on PC (like Simbin's GTR series) I find them undrivable until I tweak the wheel settings to my liking and then they provide a very good driving experience.

I know that every time I see helmet cam footage my eyes instantly focus on the apex and i even turn my head slightly...

Amazing stuff. It seems i'll adapt easily.

Anticipating a lot of disappointment in a few days....

I hope I'm wrong but watching these videos is really changing my mind... I'm going to wait and see what you guys say before I purchase anything, forget those other "review" sites that use D-pads and give every racing game a 9/10.

Agreed, i was really itching the wallet to run down to my local game store to place a pre-order down, but then changed my mind. Shift 1 really disappointed me only in terms of driving "physics". I'm really hoping that this one is way better because in terms of track list and cars, this game looks visually awesome.

Assuming the Official Playstation Magazine 9/10 that they mention is indeed the US magazine that I subscribe to:

Shift1 9/10
GT5 8/10
TDU2 5/10
blur 9/10
hot persuit 10/10

Not that I expect that to clear anything up, just mentioning scores of other games for comparison.

I'm already nitpicking but, is there someone constantly flinging paint at the windshield? The windshield is constantly getting dirty and then the dirt just vanishes. What's with all the backfire, are we driving the Batmobile? Drifting and floating around corners? The NFS logo constantly being whored everywhere on every track. Yes, I know I'm playing Shift 2, thanks for constantly reminding me. Helmet cam looks obnoxious, but who knows when you're actually playing. Numerous other things I could complain about from what I see but won't...

The only thing I like from the videos are the graphics, the finicky steering wheel, sound and Porsche. I hope the game actually plays better than it looks...

Steering is very precise for me in Shift 1 with a wheel

Here's a Video I made, so you can get an idea of how a properly setup wheel / settings can work 👍

Overhaul 2 Mod - No Assists

Nice rig Raudi. Love the way that Lambo flew off at the last turn when he felt the pressure on. Was that online or single-player?.

Single Player, I haven't tried online since I'm running the Overhaul Mod - I figured the online servers would kick me for running modified files?
