Perfect Balance's cars | Small update| 05/03/14

I got free Evo 8 Recaros and 300zx calipers, but free 5 lug would be nice. In any case I'm buying conversion hubs online, not piecing together a kit, so I'm looking at about $500.

When I'll crash my S14 during the first practice run I'll do this summer, and turn it into a misshapped ball of metal, I'll gladly send you the 5lug swap. :P

Do you have free Evo 8 Enkeis laying around too? đź’ˇ

So I've begun ordering parts for my 5lug/300zx brake swap.

So far I've bought conversion brake lines for the front, and a rebuild kit for the calipers.

Hopefully things keep going smoothly and I can get this done sooner, rather than later.

Great project so far; good to see you aren't cutting any corners, just making it happen with what you've got. Can't wait to see it "finished!"

 You said finished...

Yeah. Not for a long time.

In any case, I'm trying to build this car with the same mindset what I was building my Civic with. Buying cheap(er) parts, but not to the extent that I'm buying bad products or knockoffs (stuff like a lip is an exception, when it's just a visual piece). Seems to be working alright so far, and I'm loving the car.

Although you might not be happy to know it's probably going to spend most of it's on-track time drifting. But, I'm not building a "drift car." No high angle steering knuckles or hydraulic handbrakes for me, just a fun street car.

Nah, drifting is fun, especially when smart people like yourself keep it on the track.

I don't think a project car can ever really be finished so to speak... there's always going to be something more to do... hence the quotes around the word ;)

Been a while since the last update, I've been collecting parts, and figured as I'm getting close to having everything I need, I'd post up an update.

Here's a list of what's in the picture:

Ebay 5 lug conversion hubs. (Replacing the ebay studs and the bearings as they go bad)
10mm extended Nismo studs for the rear.
Generic blank rear rotors
300zx ATE front rotors
300zx 30mm aluminum calipers
Agency Power 240sx to 300zx SS conversion brake lines
Hawk HP+ 300zx brake pads
Hawk HP+ rear pads

Currently saving for wheels and lugnuts. (planning on 17x9 +17 MB Competition wheels, will replace them later with something better and use them for drift/track wheels.)

At that point, wheels, 5 lug, and brakes are happening at the same time.

MB Battles look pretty cool on 240s also. I know a guy with a set on a black S14 and it looks great. I just recently got MB Weapons on my Civic. MB stuff seems pretty nice. Heavy-ish.

Good to see the car is still in the making. Looking forward to seeing all these parts going on, and seeing a project of the same sort of quality as the old Civic đź‘Ť

You've also increased your selection of wheels by a great deal. Seriously, I'm having trouble finding 4-lug wheels without going into stock take-offs.

Yeah the MB Battles are the more typical choice, but to fit the 17x9.5 under the front requires a lot of stretch and lots of camber, both are things I don't really want a lot of. I'll have a bit of stretch, but not a lot. Not to mention I've only seen 2 pictures of MB Competitions on an s13. One on a drift car and one on a car without a motor, so it shouldn't look too typical.

The MB battles + coilovers are what they call the "Zilvia starter kit" on Zilvia.net.

How does it feel to finally have man-brakes?
I dunno yet, I'll tell you when I get them on.

Yeah, that was my main reason for going 5 lug. Finding proper sized wheel for a 240sx in 4x114.3 in just about impossible.

Well, I apologize for the crappy pics, but here's what's going on.

I purchased some awesome Blox Racing Aluminum lugnuts, like these:

Not my pic, but they were equally as awesome.

Then I got these wheels in the mail, slapped some used tires I had laying around on them. 225/45/17 in the rear and 205/45/17 front. Yes, front size is small.

When I just got them, I went to test fit stuff, and I discovered that they require thin tuner lugs, and my Blox lugnuts wouldn't work. I emailed who I bought them from, and the agreed to exchange them for some Muteki tuner lugs (also in purple, but not anodized), so I'm currently waiting on those in the mail. Once they get here, I still have to roll my fenders, but the car should be 5 lug with wheels sometime in the next few weeks.

In other news, my left rear caliper was found to be leaking. A new caliper was about $70, a rebuild kit was $4. Naturally I bought the kit and attempted to rebuild it myself today. Upon taking the caliper apart, I found this:

imag0079q.jpg

Which is no good. If the piston is pitted like that, it won't make a good seal. It was worse, in that picture I had already cleaned it up the best I could. I put the rebuild kit on, bled the brakes, and ordered a new caliper, which should be here next week. Kind of a set back money wise, but I'm still excited to get these things on.

Yes, my brakes are purple.

How good You found alu lug nuts? I remount my wheels often with an air gun so I'm a bit skeptic.

I liked them, I think they'd be fine. They're made from forged 7075 aluminum, which is VERY strong. I know a lot of people that run them, on track, autocross, and drift cars, and have never seen anyone have problems with them.

I don't think an air gun would make a difference as long as you're using a torque stick or something to make sure they're at the proper torque. If you aren't using one, then it's not safe regardless of the kind of lugnuts you have, overtorqued is overtorqued.

Overtorque is not an issue, but worn out socket spanner can make trouble when used on air gun. Thanks for feedback!

Like the purple caliper and wheel combo. Should look great when fitted!

Thanks. Unfortunately I'm having some electrical issues with it right now, battery has been progressively dying the past 2 weeks, and now barely wants to start the car. Alternator SEEMS to be working, but I haven't had a chance to really look at it closely, we've been busy at work.

I was always surprised how well torque sticks worked on an impact. Fantastic pieces of kit, those are. I don't have air tools at my house so wherever I would go I'd just take my torque wrench and my super duper special socket.

Aluminum 7075 alloy can be strong, but it mostly depends on the temper. There's a few different kinds, the best of which literally having twice the tensile strength of the worst. That particular temper can be as strong as cheap steels though an impact can still rip out the threads, but the lesser tempers aren't nearly. I've never seen an ad for 7075 lug nuts cite the material's temper, but I have seen some that cost twice as much as others. As for my Buddy Club nuts vs. the $30 Blox all my friends have, the main visible difference is much more precise machining on the BC, and probably also a better temper considering how both brands wore after a year of threading and torquing. When it comes to metals, you get what you pay for.

It was an Ebay deal they happened to find so they all bought a set almost 2 years ago. A month later when I needed lugs they were all sold out. The purple will start to fade in about a year's time, FYI.

So I finally got around to mounting all my parts, making sure everything was working right, replacing my leaking coilover (Free replacement under warranty, đź‘Ť Fortune Auto), lowered the car, did an alignment, and had some time to have a small photoshoot.

Need to buy shorter springs to go lower in the front, so when I do that I should be dropping another inch or so all around.

Anywai...

And finally, the new key I got for Christmas:

Definitely more proper than before. A little more low and a little more fender pull and that thing will be sitting pretty.
