Playstation 3 System Update Thread

I mean ive been to it, but do you really get anything for it?
If you ever get something like cancer or Alzheimer's and they have developed a cure by then it may very well be because of Folding or something similar.

So, yeah, I'd say you could get something from it.

Does this post have one? None that I can see.

It does if you take it in the context of the conversation. He was saying that FK has a point about curing cancer, etc from using F@H, which would be a sort of reward for doing it.

But I see where you are coming from, Duke. ;)

Thanks for backing me up. HAHA Sorry about that post. So, anyone hear of any rumors about 2.43?

Well guys, we all know the PS3 system updates of recent months have given a small few a painful time but on the whole its been pretty normal. For me its been a mixed bag from 2.4... onwards I've had a minor problem with the system.

1. After a DVD/BD had played and I quit playback either by pressing stop on the remote or just ejecting the disk the PS3 would freeze on a blank black screen and not budge, a soft reset did nothing and the system just beeped at me, so all that could be done to get back the XMB was a hard reset.

Now this was doing my nut in, and I was getting to the point of just switching playback of regular DVD's to our Sony DVD/HDD recorder. But today I formatted my PS3 with the PS3 system restore, I did a Full restore after backing up all my save games to a memory stick, I didn't care much for the obvious Demos and Games I've bought and saved as these could be re-downloaded as soon as the system was done.

Restore went well but took it's time 4 hours!! after the initial set up I re-logged all the profiles we had originally with the usernames and passwords. Then I began to notice all the new stuff on the XMB like the shut down system button above the profiles, this was never there before. Now after doing the full restore the PS3 was automatically on the latest firmware, so when I originally updated it, some how things must have been missed from the firmware install, so I conclude I must have had an incomplete installation of the firmware on my PS3 hence the buggy playback of DVD's and BD's, now I will admit there was nothing else wrong with the system apart from fan problems which disappeared but everything was fine.

Anyway I thought I would share this with you guys just in case someone can gleem some help or direction when this sort of thing rears its ugly head again.

However, LIFE was leaked out to a few people. One of them is my son. So, WHY could I not grab it too?

Because it was non-intentional so they pulled it out as soon as they found out, but we should see it in an update pretty soon.

if you want Life with Playstation, all you have to do is open folding@home. it will update and change to Life with Playstation

What is the story with this?? I start at 9.45, go to system update and start downloading 2.43. It takes until 12 to download!! I think it might be just because the PS3 is unusually far from the modem. Then when its done I start F@H, it then tells me its downloading something, that only takes a few minutes, then it installs it, then I start F@H again, thinking everything is pretty much done, until it starts downloading another file, this time it tells me it is LWPS and its 126MB. So almost 3 hours after I start, wasted a whole night of possible usage time and still no weather map. Did everyone go through this, or did I do something wrong??

It only lists the 60 most popular city's so I'd take a huge guess of a big no...

I had to do 2, one in system update, one in F@H and i was done. My connection is generally not brilliant and i was on here to, took me under 45 mins to do the lot.

3 hours, thats just too long. My system update took less than 20 minutes to download and intall, and folding@home in less than 10. Anyway if you run wireless it seems to take so much longer, this is why I bought a 60ft ethernet cable wich I only break out when I update my PS3.

So, am I the only person slightly underwhelmed by Life with Playstation?

I guess in comparison to the News Channel and Weather Channel on the Wii it is very limited in its coverage.

I think I was just hoping to see Louisville, KY on it. I was going to make my first use of it to be to check on the power outages and the Ryder Cup. I can't even see my current weather.

And I thought it would give more weather details than just current conditions.

However, the real-time cloud mapping is nice.

And I am slightly disappointed that the Folding@Home leaderboard did not pull all your data retroactively.

Well, they have already said that they will add more information as time goes on, so I sure they'll have a feature where you can enter your ZIP code (US), and your city will show up on the map.

I have a strong feeling that they just waited a week to release it so they could take some pics of Hurricane Ike to show us on the PS blog :P

From,
Chris.

Nope, not the only one but hey look at it this way, you at least have a city in your country that you can check, the rest of latin america only has 3 cities and sadly none of Mexico are in there so it's pretty useless for me.

But yeah I also think that the real-time coud mapping is pretty cool, at least something I could use from time to time.

I'm disappointed with it as well, and I was excited about it too. When I was first reading about it, it appeared to be the next best thing to sliced bread in terms of getting information. But now it's just sort of meh.

I can't get Detroit as a city, which is lame, I would like to know my weather. Also the only music I can get now is "Recommend", how can I "unlock" the other music?

I'm sure there will be updates and I'm sure it will get better it is just right now I don't feel like it was worth the hype it got.

If you press the Triangle key when on the "Live" channel, there should be an option for music in there somewhere.

Only if you have a crappy router or your connection is very bad. I have a decent 54 MBit wireless router combined with 8 Mbit down/1 Mbit up internet connection and I installed the new update in something like 10 minutes.

Overall I like it. It was what we we're told to expect, or heard what was coming. So for people to be disappointed I cant understand why, yes some of you didnt get your cities included, but lets be real, its just been launched they cant put every city in the world into it.
Someone else commented that Sony was very sly for putting this into F@H, as if the Sony Executives are laughing "Muah ha ha, we've forced them to try and cure cancer". Like it should be something you are doing anyway, regardless of energy costs or the PS health.

It'll be the same when Home is released, people will say regardless of how good or bad it is that it didnt live up to the hype.

To some up, yes LWPS isnt as good as it could be, but it has huge potential so I am more then happy with it. Dont forget, it is free!

Oh and another thing, mine took so long because I have really really bad broadband suppose to be 1mb download, but it never is and I was about 25m from the 54Mbit router.

Edit: I find it strange that the update was called 2.43, should it not have been 2.5 or what does sony have planned for the near future, or are the rumours true that this was an accidental release of maybe the test version?
