Playstation 3 System Update Thread

What does this new update do?

That's a pretty technical question. If you're not an uber-videophile and/or don't own a HDTV, then the update does nothing. It doesn't have any "features" or enhance gameplay or functionality in any way, it simply alters the way your TV will need to be calibrated. We've been discussing that for several days, so you can read the posts about it.

What does this new update do?

Not much TBH, I think they have speeded up the web browser because now its just as fast as my mac, but also they have fixed the Wide colour thing, which IMO only makes the picture on the TV more contrasty, but I'm sure others on this forum will notice the actual real changes to the image (yes I have a TV that supports wide colour)

Im sure there will some behind the scenes security updates too, but who knows.

Thanks guys, I looked around for visual or gameplay upgrades, but couldn't see any. And that's why then, there aren't any. :D

I know I probably sound like an idiot asking this, but does the AQUOS (46" model if it matters) support full RGB? I'd assume that it does, being a higher end TV, but I couldn't find anything in the manual (which for the most part, sucks).

The best thing to do would be go ahead and try it. It has the timer going when you change modes, so if your TV doesn't support it, it will simply go to a black screen and then reset itself back to normal after thirty seconds.

As long as you still see the XMB, then your TV accepts the signal. The most obvious change is that the screen will get slightly darker and "more contrasty", and your TV will need to be recalibrated to accomodate the new color data. All in all, the change is likely to be minimal, that's why it doesn't bother me to continue waiting until they get all the kinks worked out.

Odd. It only took less than a minute to download the 1.81 update via my PS3's WiFi to my wireless router. What kind of connection and download speeds do you get from your ISP? Maybe your ISP or the servers were having some problems.
I just downloaded the new 1.82 update and it took a little longer this time...

2 minutes and 15 seconds to download and 2 minutes flat to install.

Interestingly both were slower up to about 50% completion and then zipped to 100%.

Anyone know what was added with this update?

MPEG-4 Part 10, is all I know about.

"We have a PS3 firmware update in the works. Scheduled for release in the next few days, firmware 1.82 is an update that enables the playback of AVC High Profile (H.264/MPEG-4) files. As most of you know, these are high quality files that you’ll now be able to play on your PS3. Hopefully this update is moving us closer to the audio playback features many of you commented about in my post the other week. We’re continuing to evaluate and improve things across the board, including PS2 software compatibility."

Thought I would copy this post to its appropriate thread:

• XMB backgrounds
• Change the folder classification
• Emoticons
• Change CD output to 44.1/88.2/176.4kHz

• Change PS3 video settings in-game
• “Bit Mapping” in the “Music Setting”

Looks like quite a pleasant little up-date, I assume the US will get it at the same time as Europe.

Thanks for the update Scaff. 👍

  • Ability to rearrange games on the XMB
This is going to be very useful! I already have over 20 PSN and demo games and never did like how they were listed by the date they were downloaded. Now, it sounds like we will be able to list them in any order we like, which will even allow us to group games by genre. 👍

  • Option menu now includes “eject disk”/Press triangle to eject games/CDs/movies in the XMB
The PS3 remote comes with a button for ejecting discs, and I always thought it was odd that they didn't have a key combo on the controller or menu option for ejecting the disc. Guess at least now there is a menu option.

  • XMB backgrounds
I actually like the current background so can't say this really excites me, but nice to have that option. I wonder if this also means we can choose what color we like of the current background and select it only instead of the time/date related color change.

  • Change the folder classification
I'm not sure I understand exactly what this will mean? I doubt it, but I hope this is a sign that we may finally be able to create folders for the video files.

  • Emoticons
    OK.

  • Change CD output to 44.1/88.2/176.4kHz
    👍

  • Change PS3 video settings in-game
    👍

  • “Bit Mapping” in the “Music Setting”
This sounds interesting, but I need to hear more details on this feature.

  • Save AVCHD type animations from a Memory Stick
    👍

  • Change settings like upscaling while playing PS and PS2 games
    👍

  • Add bookmarks
    About time! 👍

  • Web browser security function in the browser’s tool section
    OK.

  • Avatar moves during audio visual chat
I'm not sure what they mean by moves?
Al in all, 1.9 looks like a very nice update, with 2.0 looking to add even more welcome enhancements to the operating system. 👍

Here's the PS.Blog entry that explains some of the features.

A quick update: we have a new firmware upgrade in the works for PS3, it will be available for download in the next few days. Firmware 1.90 brings with it several new features, many of which readers of this blog have requested – I’m happy to report.

Customization is one new feature: you can now personalize the wallpaper on your XMB with a photo. This was one of the top three requests we received via the blog’s contact form. When viewing a photo, simply bring up the options screen by pressing the triangle button and selecting “set as wallpaper” from the options displayed. Additionally, you can now change the order of the games displayed under the game icon on the XMB.

Another new feature focuses on added communication elements: When you’re sending messages to friends on PLAYSTATION Network, you can now use emoticons. We’ve added a bunch of emoticons that can be easily accessed from the virtual keyboard. Also, another cool addition is, when an avatar is displayed during voice/video chat, the avatar will move in response to audio.

Finally, on the more technical side, you can now play AVCHD videos saved on a Memory Stick or digital video camera, and we’ve added the ability to upscale audio CD output from your PS3. Now, there are two requirements for this feature: the device you’re outputting to must support a sampling frequency of 88.2 kHz or 176.4 kHz, and your PS3 must be connected to that device with an HDMI cable or digital optical cable.
Oh, and one more thing: you can now eject discs using your controller by selecting “Eject Disc” in the options menu after you push the PS button.

Several other minor options will be included in 1.90 including a few new display options that will allow you to adjust your display while playing PlayStation, PlayStation2 and Blu-ray movies. More info on these options as well as detailed info on the rest of the 1.90 additions will be available later this week. We’ll update this post with a link to that info when it’s available.

We’re working on additional features for our next update that will incorporate more of your feedback, so as always thanks for all of your support, and please keep those suggestions coming!

So with the custom backgrounds, it looks like that proves the "leaked" 2.0 list was fake since it overlaps into that... but hey, I like these updates. 👍

Noticed one glitch already while sending DP some PS3 mail. The time stamp on incoming mail is off by one hour (behind).

Everything else is OK. But, it's not what I expected. The emoticons are kind of boring. The XMB desktop is the only cool thing. Sorting content for games is useless, too.

When are we getting custom avatars?

Well that was pretty useless. All it does now is sort by instal date or by platform (PS1,PS2,PS3)👎

It is nice having the eject option, but I thought it was also going to be in the PS button menu. So instead of being able to eject a disc at any time (like you can using the PS3 remote), with just the controller you have to first quit playback, then use the triangle button and select eject. Oh well... something to look forward to in a future update I suppose. :)

I've noticed a hiccup. Whilst setting a picture as a wallpaper, the console froze. But everything was fine as soon as I turned it off - even the wallpaper was set alright. Hasn't happened again, though.

Looking forward to custom avatars!

I dont really understand the point of being able to eject the disk with the controller. I mean, yea its cool, but you are going to have to get out of your seat to put a different game in anyway, So whats the point?? Also, how do you put the emoticons in text?

When you're typing your message, you have to go into the special characters selection pop-up and scroll all the way down, even when it looks like the text characters are running out. And then you'll have a bunch of smilies.

IMO, this was a pretty lame update. Manual game sorting is literally useless, remotely ejecting a disc is pointless, and I don't use custom backgrounds because I like the way it was before.

All I really need is custom folder creation and in-game XMB. Make it happen, firmware 2.0...

It can save you time if you want to play another game and have to walk 30 feet to your 80in screen, you can eject during the long walk ;)

Maybe I'm missing something but doesn't it seem logical that there would be a way to password protect any/all login accounts? I realize you can password protect the console's content playback and network sign in functions, but wouldn't it be much simpler to just have a master account that requires a password to even log into it? Basically like just about every other OS on the planet. :odd:

I agree

In fact, you could say it isn't really manual game sorting, as you only have two very basic sort criteria. I want a manual sort that allows you to organize them in any order you like, or at least add the option of creating folders to organize your games that way.

I might not understand what you mean, but you can/do password protect all users on a PS3, even the sub-accounts.

I've never really understood the point of this feature on anything. I had it on a VCR years ago, and then I had it on every DVD player I have ever owned, and now my PS3. For all of these I still have to get up and walk to the system.

The only benefit I can ever see for this is if the button breaks on the machine.

I'm just happy there is background images now (although I wish I could watermark it as it appears a little to bright with the menus) as it was one of the main arguements to get an XBox360 from my friend. What he's going to brag about now I have yet to find out.

I think he means to protect the offline portion of the accounts as well D-N.

Correct. I guess when I used the term "login" I basically meant power on. I don't see why there is not an option to require a password when changing from one "user" to another in "offline" mode. It just seems to me a more efficient way to control/limit the content access of the sub-account users as compared to the current setup, while still giving the master account user full access without the hassle of entering additional passwords.

It's really not an issue for me, just a random observation. I suppose since I don't use it regularly the current elegance of Sony's implementation might just be lost on me.
