Playstation 3 System Update Thread

Correct. I guess when I used the term "login" I basically meant power on. I don't see why there is not an option to require a password when changing from one "user" to another in "offline" mode. It just seems to me a more efficient way to control/limit the content access of the sub-account users as compared to the current setup, while still giving the master account user full access without the hassle of entering additional passwords.

It's really not an issue for me, just a random observation. I suppose since I don't use it regularly the current elegance of Sony's implementation might just be lost on me.

Erm, I think you might be able to password protect user accounts by hitting triangle while highlighting your account and selecting some option, but I'm not sure. I'll have to check.

What he's going to brag about now I have yet to find out.
That the guys at the X360 service center know him by his first name? ;)

Interesting. I thought there was an option for also requiring passwords for logging onto any user account, even when offline, only that the default setting doesn't requite it.

Initially that's what I assumed but boy I haven't been able to figure it out. And that's even after taking time to RTFM on the subject :D

Its funny, because about 3 weeks ago his 360 did the "no disc" problem. He got it working for a couple of days, but then it went down again. He called MS and they told him they'd send him a box to ship his in, and within 5 days he will have another 360 which lead him to brag about their "excellent customer service". 5 days pass (that doesn't include the weekend, which would make it 7 days) and he finally recieves the box and quickly ships his 360 out that day. A week passes, and still no 360 so he calls MS and they tell him that they recieved his almost 5 days ago, but they have not yet shipped another one to him at this time. That was last tuesday, and he still hasn't recieved another 360 from them. The best part? I brag everyday about all the cool things that had happened while playing my PS3. What good is his "amazing library of games" when he doesn't even have a console to play them on?!

Awesome, time for me to import my picture gallery onto my PS3!
Did a test last night and it appears that importing them isn't necessary if you are using Media Sharing. I loaded up a GT4 photomode picture off my PC and made it my wallpaper.

I wasn't sure if it would allow that or not, but it did.

But I decided that I prefer the default background, so it was pointless.

I like the new wallpaper facility 👍

And not having to scroll through an increasingly long list of demos to get to GT:HD is very handy too :)

Let me guess it was the first game you downloaded, so by switching the date order its now at the top of your list.

Exactly the same as me :)

This sounds familiar to me as well. Except that puts every other full game I downloaded at the bottom, below my demos. I would have preferred a drag and drop style feature, but at least this is something.

Flash wallpapers. Everything is also a lot faster (XMB, icons, games, controller connection), and I heard something about a music equaliser. There's a new screensaver. I also heard they have some fixes for Warhawk (apparantly you can actually get into games now!), which is the best news from this update. Also additional support for PS3-PSP PSN games via USB.

There's also rumours of .avi support, which apparantly aren't true. There are a lot of rumours floating around, and none of the above are officially confirmed, but it seems that's at least a few of the updates.

Oh, and the reason the update is so slow is because it apparantly downloads the entire OS over again.

Well, I hate this update. It froze my PS3. It's stuck on a black screen and nothing short of turning it off does anything.

I think I'm really screwed.

Try reseting?

EDIT: Reset by holding 'On/Reset' button for seven seconds, or so. It shut off. Turned it back on, and all was OK. The update took. I guess the PS3 had trouble reseting. That never happened before. Freaked me out a little. I thought I was FUBAR.

This is from the Sony site:

An update to the PS3TM system software was released on September 4, 2007. If you update your PS3TM system, the system software will be version 1.92.

The PLAYSTATION®3 system software version 1.92 update includes the following:

Playability

Playability status with the PS3TM system has changed for some PLAYSTATION®3 format titles*.

* This does not affect titles in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Oceania.

Note:

* This system software update includes all features contained in previous versions.
* The new system software will preserve any settings previously made to the PLAYSTATION 3.
* Depending on the software title, you may not be able to play without first updating the PS3 system software.
* Do not perform updates using any data other than the official update data provided by Sony Computer Entertainment over a network or on disc media, and do not perform updates by methods other than those described in the product documentation or in this site. If an update is performed using data from another source, by another method, or with a PS3 system that has been altered or modified in any way, the PS3 system may not operate properly and may not be able to install the official update data. Any of these actions may void the PS3 system warranty and affect your ability to obtain warranty services and repair services from Sony Computer Entertainment.

The .avi rumor won't die.

This is either a bad rumor or people just don't understand .avi files. The .avi extension is fairly generic and can run with many different codecs, so it is quite possible that the PS3 will now recognize .avi files, but if it doesn't use a supported codec the file will still not work.

It has alos been my experience that the generic form of .avi allows viruses to easily be embedded within the file. Unless you trust your source it is best to stick to more codec directed file extensions such as .mpg, .MP4, and .wmv.

If your worried about this in future download it using your computer then transfer it to the PS3... That way it will be all complete and it can be read strait from the flash memory. Less chance of connection muck ups.

Thats how ive done my updates everytime because of where the PS3 manual basically said that if something goes wrong in firmware installation youll be left with a 7KG paperweight :nervous::scared:

So I guess this update was to fix some PS3 game issues.....odd when it says playability status does that mean some region games may NOW NOT PLAY??? or now so games that dont will? Wish they were more clear!

+REP Well said & good info to share. 👍

I always have downloaded it straight to the PS3, but your right, it's probably safer to simply download it straight to my PC and then to the PS3. The problem right now though is that I don't see where you can download it to the PC. Sony's PS3 System Software Update site only shows 1.90 being available for download.

BTW: How large is the 1.92 update file?

It's one of those things people don't realize unless they actually do a lot of video editting and conversion. When I first started messing with it my free editor I used just put everything as .avi - divX, MPG2, whatever, but I found that it made it hard to tell the difference and during my piracy days movie files were more likely to have viruses than video. It's odd how when I quit downloading pirated stuff I quit having virus issues.

Not much difference in the two methods actually, when updating via the PS3 its still a two step process. First the data is saved (and this process can be cancelled if required) and then the installation is carried out; its the installation process that can cause a problem if you cut the power while it is happening and that is regardless of how you got the data to the PS3.

I've had my network connection drop-out during a download and I simply started the download again, the PS3 will not allow the update install to start until the complete download is done.

For anyone who has downloaded the update to a PC, can you please tell me the size of the file? Thanks.

File Name: PS3UPDATA.PUP
File Size : 122,344 kb
File Type : PUP File
Thanks!

122MB... I barely have enough room... time for me to move more files off the PS3 to the PC.... I really need to make a decision on whether or not to replace the HDD with a 250GB one or just use an external USB drive. :indiff:

122mb, you mean.

Also, it downloaded super-fast for me, so I'm not sure what everyone's complaint was. It seems it downloaded super-fast for some people, and super-slow for others. Whether that has anything to do with different countries I'm not sure.

:embarrassed: I do that more times than I care to think about. :)

It's just like for other downloads. Varying speeds can be attributed to so many different things, much of which may not even have anything to do with Sony's servers. Fortunately at least for me, rarely have I had any serious slow downloads, even when downloading off other regional sites. 👍
