Playstation 3 System Update Thread

PS3 System Software Update (v4.30)

blog.us.playstation.com
Tuesday, October 23rd, we will be releasing a new system software update for PlayStation 3 (version 4.30). With this update we have made several changes to how Trophies are displayed on your PlayStation 3. The Trophy Collection will now reside under PlayStation Network on the XMB. Trophies that you have earned playing PlayStation Vita games are now displayed on your PlayStation 3. You will also be able to see your Trophy level and progress towards the next level while viewing your trophy collection.

By the beginning of November 2012, we will retire the services available through the Life with PlayStation application. In conjunction with its retirement, we will stop offering the Life with PlayStation application to new users with the 4.30 update. This includes the conclusion of our participation with Stanford University’s Folding@home, a distributed computing project aimed at understanding protein folding, misfolding and studying the causes of a variety of diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s as well as various cancers.

We’d like to thank the more than 15 million users that have participated in the program since it started on PS3 in 2007. PS3 users have donated in total more than 100 million computation hours to the Folding@home project to date, and as a result, contributing greatly to Stanford University’s Alzheimer ’s disease research. Considering the contribution PS3 has made to the project, we decided to retire it as a result of discussions with Stanford University.

Not that I ever used it but yet another PS3 "update" that removes things rather than adds them. They seem to be getting good at that.

- The only "good" thing that have happened, for me, is that they've removed the annoying add, in the XMB-menu.

Exactly. And they don't even give good reasons for what they do. What was Folding at Home hurting?

Support costs, perhaps? I imagine after all these years it finally became so little used that it wasn't beneficial for Stanford or Sony.

Removal of "features" can be a good thing.

Especially when use of said feature could have been the cause of killing so many PS3's. On my first unit when I wasn't actually using the PS3, it was F@H always! My refurb SONY sent never F@H and lasted longer. I'm not blaming F@H solely for the death of my 1st PS3. The hardware was not designed to endure the heat complex computations creates.

Firmware Update 4.31

Digital Platforms Community Manager SCEA
Hi everyone,

I’m posting this message to inform you that there will be a minor firmware update (v.4.31) released on the evening of Monday, October 29th.

There will not be PlayStation Network maintenance during this time; online play and access to apps will not be affected during the release of this update.

This is not a mandatory update. However, we suggest you keep your systems updated with the latest firmware, as these updates further improve overall system stability and help provide you with the best online entertainment experience possible.

To update to v.4.31, select Settings from your Xross Media Bar (XMB) > System Update > Update via Internet and then follow the on-screen instructions.

Lulz. They updated the blog before they actually updated the ability to download the firmware. It's not on the download area yet, and people trying in the comments can't actually download it through their PS3.

Yet another time they release an update then release the X.X1 update right after  clearly they don't test properly! I hate these updates because they add basically nothing and often take stuff away.

I updated, to the X.X1, and it apparently helped on some stability problems.

^^^I cannot stand the lack of sorting in the new store. Terrible to navigate.

Glad to see its not just me. Could we at least group DLCs from the same title together? I go to check out be Rock Band songs and have to look at the entire week's listing to see if there is a bundled pack.

The old store was a milllion times better. Especially for Rock Band songs. I don't want to scroll through 4,000 songs just for one. Use the name by letter organization from before.

I'm annoyed mostly because of how poorly it runs. Even going from menu to menu gives you a two second pause before it tells you if it recognized your button presses.

That is also another large issue. The new store is terrible.

The only positive is that they wrote it in HTML5 so finally there is also a web store that is easier to use by virtue of proper mouse and keyboard input.

I also hate that the searching requires you to scroll through the alphabet, as you do in the YouTube application. That really annoys me. Why can't we use the normal keyboard?

Looks to be based on a type of predictive text as the matches mount up on the right.

You can sort by various criteria to the right, where is says 'sort'...:sly:

It should be like the old one.

I will go with the majority here, the new layout is a total mess. The search feature is reasonable but for general browsing, it is a disaster.

I am with a minority. Games are easy to find by type and by price range, AND the "new" predictive search mode makes items easy to find.

However, one gripe that I do have with the search engine though is that when you search you search through everything in the store, and I do mean everything. Movies, games, TV shows, and the whole nine yards. It is a mixed bag though as I found an old anime that I watched when I was a child on PSN.

Currently thought to be to keep people from using the newly-unlocked PS2 emulator that Sony have apparently been using rather than patching the games individually like was previously implied for PSN classics.

I can still play my ps2 games from psn on my 3.55 Kmeaw ps3, this update only strengthen downgrade possibility. Since it's only mandatory update so safe issue for newest firmware must be priority now.

Mind reminding the rest of the class of what? Some of us have been sleeping under a rock.
