Playstation 3 System Update Thread

After trying it out, here's my take on the new Youtube App: While Navigating is abit odd now, Video quality is so much better. Videos play with little to no buffering, Sound quality is better, There is no terrible Audio/Video sync issue and the videos are actually HD (not horrid Standard definition). My only complaint is the navigation itself. Would be great if I could actually access channels instead of just doing a blanket search. And one small nitpick is the fact that I can't use my USB Keyboard for typing, which is odd considering I can for every other thing that involves typing. Other then that, Like it. Big plus from me 👍

Youtube app is just OK. It a few yrs late but whateva. Stupid thing is that pressing left or right on D-pad or left stick jumps out of video completely and jumps to next video- Stupis control scheme.

I've been usin PS3Youtube for a long time and I usually just download videos in 720p or 1080p and watch them in XMB. Well, yesterday PS3Youtube was broken and now this app comes out. PS3Youtube is way better than this app, but the app does stream better.

Searching for a way to download my videos yesterday I find this ''bookmarklet'' thing that allows HD downloading and streaming (up to 720p streaming) directly on Youtube page in PS3 browser.

http://danielb.info/ps3/bookmarklet.aspx It works great and I downloaded all the vids in my sub list no problem.

I'd much rather have Youtube just work in HD in browser than this dumb app that totally separates Youtube from the rest of the internet which is stupid.

Isn't the YT app still in beta? You'd expect a few bugs etc. Same when the BBC sport app first came out, it was rough round the edges by a long way. But they sorted it by the time the Olympics started.

Navigation is a bit quirky but for the most part everything is in sync minus a few very small audio drops

Just logged in and there was a prompt for the to download 4.25 - I wasn't able to log in without updating it either, so that's just a tip to others 👍.
Seems like is only benefits those with PS+ as the update increases the 150mb of cloud data to 1GB.

Is there any way to choose video resolution in the Youtube app on PS3 ? or Is it pre-determined by connection quality by the app ?
I've been using for days, listening to music section, flawless streaming, not even a hiccup once, but the video seems to be 720p only and they are from VEVO.

The new update has improved the web browser by a long way. Its now much faster and smoother but heres hoping they ditch it altogether and replace it with Firefox in the near future! :)

I wonder if there's updates to the browser?

Nope, The firmware was just for the Storage upgrade.
So they pushed out an update just for PS+ members...Wish there was a lifetime plan, Pay once get PS+ forever

They don't always list all changes, I'm sure they also changed some other things in the background.

The amount of saved data you can save in online storage is now increased. To use this feature you must have a Sony Entertainment Network account and subscribe to PlayStation Plus.
The maximum available storage capacity for one account has been increased to 1GB, and the maximum number of saved data items that can be stored to 1,000.
(From PlayStation UK)

So, yes only the extra cloud storage, for PS+ users. Atleast according to PS UK.

The browser just gets a new Playstation website landing page specifically created for access through the PS3. That's about it apart from the cloud storage.

I don't think the EU store have even got the YouTube app yet! SCEE always giving us the short stick... just look at the Fifa 13 demo.

The Danish haven't got the Youtube-app, yet. We've only got VidZone and MUBI.

Still can't get the YouTube app to work for me...

Maybe it hates older systems.

I am hard wired to my laptop, I am always signed in into my Youtube account, all of my preferences, settings are reflected on the Youtube PS3 app. Try to do that, see if it helps. The profile playback settings affect the PS3 Youtube playback res, and all subscribed channels, view history, search history and channels are also in sync with the signed in profile.

Is it just me, or others having trouble with getting the last couple of updates to download?
I bought Sleeping Dogs today and the entire download update/download bonus content/install game process took about 20min. Then I tried to do the PS3 update, and I cancelled it after 5min at 3%. I know the bonus content for the game was 25MB, and saw it download in less than a minute, so unless the PS update is GB, there is something wrong. I had to cancel/restart the last update a few times before it eventually worked and updated in 30sec.
Urgh... I will download it to a USB tomorrow and see if that works

I didn't have any problems yesterday (around 30 hours ago).

Problem for me is it won't boot up. I get the little loading circle down in the corner, then the YouTube logo in the middle, then the screen goes black and stays like that.

Did the problem occur happen when you try to open the Youtube app while you are directly hardwired to a PC where you are currently signed in on your own Youtube account ?

I don't have a PC so can't do that. I am hardwired to the internet though.

I'd just tried launching the app while signed out on the computer, it has a circle spinning on the right bottom corner for a few seconds, then YT logo appears in the center, circle still spinning for another 3 or 4 seconds then it loads up fine. You have to sign in on the PSN and make sure your MTU is optimal, you will need a PC connected to the modem used, and run the ping command. Here is a detailed instruction to do it :

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/5793

On my PS3 network settings, my MTU is set at 1471, 1 point lower than optimum 1472 based on the ping results. Very smooth internet so far, no issues with GT5 as well. Try 1471, then 1472.

I don't have issues with my connection though. I never DC from GT5 online races, and I host with no problems all the time. I don't think the internet is the problem...

Mmmm, that is really weird, I have the 1st release slim PS3, just updated my OS to 4.25, and I am using Internet Connection Sharing to share internet between my laptop and PS3 via CAT5 LAN. I have Youtube app version 1.01, maybe it's the DNS setting ? I used 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 ( Google public DNS ) and I set static IP ( 192.168.1.2 - PS3 and my laptop 192.168.1.1 ).
With this configuration, I could play GT5 online with no issues while downloading "stuff" using P2P on the laptop. I also disabled QOS packet scheduler service on the laptop.
Youtube app streams videos without any lag/stutter even at 720p while browsing other vids.

You're not speaking my language, sorry.

It's not a huge issue, I'm not a daily YouTube viewer. Just thought it would be nice to have it.

Yeah I was wondering about hidden updates..

Here's some helpful links. The post above mentions Youtube bookmarklet http://danielb.info/ps3/bookmarklet.aspx

But that stupid PS3 Youtube App advertisement basically tries to block you from Youtube on the PS3 browser. Bookmark this link and until your cookies get deleted, that page won't come back to bother you. http://www.youtube.com/index?persist_app=1&app=desktop
Then you can use the bookmarklet.
To save you from having to use extra bookmark, you can use PS3 Bookmarklet on pesky app page. to setup re-direct to standard YouTube (loads same page) :). Either way, this restores full access to standard YouTube (e.g. external video links on Google etc and bookmarked vids work again), until associated cookie disappears (PS3 browser has a long term habit of forgetting cookies...).
