Please, please please be backwards compatible and have massive hard drives. 1tb anyone?

I can't say I am overly impressed with these rumoured specs. An octo core, with 8GB of RAM and something comparable to a GTX 680 would have been welcome.

Here comes yet another generation of consoles holding back what technology can really do with games. One of the big three surely has to pull something amazing. I'm starting to feel like I'm done with consoles - where are the 3D VR headsets with motion tracking? Where are the bleeding edge systems?

It's all shaping up to be very lacklustre.

consoles, by their very nature, will never be truly cutting edge. Gotta keep in mind these are made by corporations to generate profits. Cutting edge is great for R&D but not at making profits.

Looks like this thing won't even come out till after the next Xbox is done.

Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), has said his company is more concerned with making the best games console possible as opposed to being first out the door with cheaper hardware.

Chatting with GTTV this week at E3, Tretton observed that Sony has never been first to bring a product to market, and would rather develop a better platform than rush something into stores.

“We’ve never been first. We’ve never been cheapest. It’s about being the best,” said Tretton.

“If you can build a better machine and it’s going to come out a little bit later, that’s better than rushing something to market that’s going to run out of gas for the long term."

“In a perfect world you want the best machine that ships first that’s cheapest. But the number one goal is to be the best machine and that’s what we’re always focused on," he added.

Elsewhere, Tretton was quizzed on the status of Rockstar’s elusive Agent, which has failed to put in appearance at E3 since its unveiling in 2009.

“You couldn’t have said it better when you said Agent from Rockstar. I work for Sony Computer Entertainment. The second I start working for Rockstar, I’ll have some definitive information for you on Agent.”

Sony seem to have this late to the party attitude because it worked for the PS1 and PS2 but certainly didn't for the PS3. They need to get in there early IMO.

I personally don't mind a late showing, I have plenty of games I want to play on PS3 so Sony showing up late to the party with PS4 is fine. JT is correct in saying its about having the best, so let's see if they live up to his hype, at the beginning of the Sony press conference he said everything he says and shows will be scrutinised and he is spot on, he said it will be the best console so let's see.

I could do with a few suggestions for games I might have overlooked, to try and keep my PS3 from feeling stale.

Currently I own: Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne 3, GTA IV, BF3, COD MW, COD MW2, COD BLOPS, GT5, GT5 Prologue, Dirt, Dirt 3, Fallout 3, FONV, Oblivion, Skyrim, Demons Souls, Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 3, IL2-Sturmovic, Dead Space, Dead Space 2, Bioshock, Bulletstorm, Killzone 2, Killzone 3, LA Noire, Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, Heavy Rain, GOW3, GOW HD Collection, Deus Ex HR, Heavy Rain, Uncharted, Uncharted 2, Uncharted 3, MGS4, Super Streetfighter 4, Flower, Journey, Flow, Pixeljunk Eden, Wipeout HD, Lemmings HD, GT HD, Starhawk, Rocket Knight Adventures, Sonic 4 Ep1.

There may be more, but that's most of them, I think.

Have I missed anything truly remarkable that would make me want to hang onto this gen?

If you enjoyed that get the sequal Birds of steel.

Otherwise I don't know. Erm I am assuming you don't have much interest in the F1 games?

On the topic. I hope the PS4 is the best specs. I would rather pay and wait than have a not so good console.

Personally, I'm not even sure that developers have released the full potential of the ps3. If so, there is absolutely no rush to release the next one.

Unfortunately, my worry is that the next ps3 will infact be not-so-great in the spec department, but cheap and early. This is due to the simple fact that it worked for Microsoft with the Xbox 360. Of course, the PS3 is a vastly superior console. I think there is a chance of Sony veering towards the tactics of Microsoft. On the other hand, Sony have a great history for brilliant hardware and not rushing releases.

A APU and a CPU? A APU has a CPU, GPU, and Northbridge all on one die. Why would they want effectively two CPU's and integrated graphics? This will just hold computer gaming back. This article just holds too much information back and confuses it, check this. It's actually just a APU only. 3.2GHz Quad core with a special GPU chip which is supposed to be an downclocked HD 7970(from 925MHz to 800MHz).

So when you think about it, it's not that bad, that is, if the rumors hold true. That's actually pretty decent and will bring a lot better graphics for the improved hardware if, again, if the rumor holds true to what it says.

I wouldn't call either of their first two systems deliberately late. Sega released the Saturn early, but it was a surprise launch and it wasn't really ready anyway. As for the PS2, Sega again went first, but Sony's real competition at that point was Nintendo (and MS, as it turned out).

- The PS3 is maxed in terms of performance. I die from laughter, on the inside, every time someone says the PS3 is capable of more than it is doing. Many fail to realize how limited their games are in regards to graphics and features. For example, since this is GTP, GT5 had tons of issues with frame rates immediately after launch. How did they fix this? They removed track items and lowered the texture quality on various objects.

I have stated this multiple times but I will reiterate here: If the CEO of Crytek has stated that CryEngine 3 (the engine used for Crysis 3 and subsequently any game built using this engine) will NOT run at full capacity on next-gen consoles, then how do YOU figure that the PS3's "potential" has yet to be "released?"

- The PS3 is not "vastly superior" to the XBOX. They offer extremely similar performance. Some games run better on the PS3 while others perform much poorer on it (in comparison with the 360.) From media features and peripheral support perspective, the 360 IS "vastly superior" to the PS3. Even with Playstation+ the PS3 is poor in comparison. The ONLY thing PS3 has over the 360 is Blu-Ray; which doesn't really matter anymore since we are in the transition to digital copies.

Personally, I will most likely only be buying the next generation of XBOX.
-Kinect, media, Windows integration, better network, exclusives (Forza, Halo), smartglass, etc etc.

However, I do hope Sony comes out with a great console if only to push console technology further in competition with Microsoft. But, I am not holding my breathe for "cutting-edge" technology. It just will not happen at the price point of a console.

Facepalm. They don't even know how to decipher the spec sheet. Plus the original website that the specs came from the website said that the 16GB of flash is to hold the OS. The most powerful Llano fusion chip is a 3GHz Quad core and has a integrated HD 6550D GPU that runs at 600MHz in stock. I think this will be the APU due to the specs above. Why? Because it's a 3.2GHz Quad core(one module is a dual core) and the GPU clock is near to what the information references. Plus the processor is due for release in a month or two.

But really in the end of it all, this spec sheet is based on rumors and "leaks", we won't know until Sony hands the spec sheet out in release.

The PS3 has many things that make it better than the 360. It has the best exclusives including Gran Turismo, Uncharted, Killzone, Resistance, Infamous, Motorstorm, God of War, Socom, Little Big Planet, Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank and many more. The controllers are much better IMO. The failure rate of the PS3 is much lower than the 360; at one point it was at 54.2%. The graphics are also better. Bluray discs are much better and can hold much more data so you don't need multiple discs for one game. The network is better because it is free and still works great( I don't care about party chat). If you get PS+ it will save you a lot of money with the free games. I don't see how the 360 is better than the PS3 in almost anyway.

Xbox has better controllers and the online is more stable IMHO.

Also it's not burdened with GT5.

How is the online more stable? The online gameplay of each console is identical, the only difference is that ps3 is free.

Exclusives don't necessarily mean it's a better console. And the Xbox has Forza, Halo, Gears of War, Minecraft and all the Kinect games.

In your opinion. In mine the Xbox controller is much better than any DS3 controller. And PS Move is inferior to kinect...

Was lower. The new slims are incredibly reliable consoles and I can vouch for that personally. Also, Xbox Live wasn't down for months like PSN...

The graphics are not better than the Xbox. Maybe for some games, but not all. I have GTA IV on both consoles and occasionally while driving along textures won't load fast enough and buildings won't appear for a few seconds. This is on a slim I bought a few months ago with a scratch-free disc, and is a problem I've failed to replicate on the Xbox.

Blu-Ray discs are better but many games don't have a 2nd disc and the ones that do you normally put the 2nd disc in, it installs the content and you never have to switch discs again...

PS+ is a good deal, I admit that but I'd rather have the Xbox which freezes less than the PS3 and is much nicer to use in my opinion.

Down for maintenance. Down for maintenance etc.

Plus GT5 is crap online. Freezes etc.

It's free though so not grumbling.

Firstly, it wasnt down for months. Secondly, they gave us free stuff, which more than compensated for the down-time. Also, the Xbox Live was hacked in something like 2009, which shows that originally, the ps3's network was much stronger that xbox's, since it took a couple of years more to hack the ps3.

Well, it certainly felt like months. And free stuff does not compensate for the down-time. 'They've got your password and credit card details, but have a free game to make it all OK!'.

Xbox Live did get hacked, but because the PS3 got hacked later on it doesn't mean it's stronger. Maybe a specific group of hackers targeted Xbox live first, and a few years later another group decides to hack PSN...

Both consoles have their merits, but I personally prefer the Xbox. I find online more reliable and it freezes less for me, plus I prefer the controller. But the PS3 is not 'vastly superior'...

I can see your viewpoint, but barely any credit card details were stolen, just an extremely small minority. Also, Sony made people change their password, so at least they have really boosted their security now.

Sounds fantastic.

If you don't mind me asking. How many were stolen.

How many were stolen.
According to Wikipedia (didn't check the individual sources):
On May 2, 2011, Sony issued a press release, according to which the Sony Online Entertainment services had been taken offline for maintenance due to potentially related activities during the initial criminal hack that caused the PlayStation Network outage. Over 12,000 credit card numbers from non-U.S. cardholders and additional information from 24.7 million SOE accounts may have been stolen.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Network_outage#cite_note-autogenerated1-25
