Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), has said his company is more concerned with making the best games console possible as opposed to being first out the door with cheaper hardware.
Chatting with GTTV this week at E3, Tretton observed that Sony has never been first to bring a product to market, and would rather develop a better platform than rush something into stores.
“We’ve never been first. We’ve never been cheapest. It’s about being the best,” said Tretton.
“If you can build a better machine and it’s going to come out a little bit later, that’s better than rushing something to market that’s going to run out of gas for the long term."
“In a perfect world you want the best machine that ships first that’s cheapest. But the number one goal is to be the best machine and that’s what we’re always focused on," he added.
Elsewhere, Tretton was quizzed on the status of Rockstar’s elusive Agent, which has failed to put in appearance at E3 since its unveiling in 2009.
“You couldn’t have said it better when you said Agent from Rockstar. I work for Sony Computer Entertainment. The second I start working for Rockstar, I’ll have some definitive information for you on Agent.”
I could do with a few suggestions for games I might have overlooked, to try and keep my PS3 from feeling stale.
Currently I own: Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne 3, GTA IV, BF3, COD MW, COD MW2, COD BLOPS, GT5, GT5 Prologue, Dirt, Dirt 3, Fallout 3, FONV, Oblivion, Skyrim, Demons Souls, Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 3, IL2-Sturmovic, Dead Space, Dead Space 2, Bioshock, Bulletstorm, Killzone 2, Killzone 3, LA Noire, Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, Heavy Rain, GOW3, GOW HD Collection, Deus Ex HR, Heavy Rain, Uncharted, Uncharted 2, Uncharted 3, MGS4, Super Streetfighter 4, Flower, Journey, Flow, Pixeljunk Eden, Wipeout HD, Lemmings HD, GT HD, Starhawk, Rocket Knight Adventures, Sonic 4 Ep1.
There may be more, but that's most of them, I think.
Have I missed anything truly remarkable that would make me want to hang onto this gen?
Sony seem to have this late to the party attitude because it worked for the PS1 and PS2 but certainly didn't for the PS3. They need to get in there early IMO.
motorazaPersonally, I'm not even sure that developers have released the full potential of the ps3. If so, there is absolutely no rush to release the next one.
Unfortunately, my worry is that the next ps3 will infact be not-so-great in the spec department, but cheap and early. This is due to the simple fact that it worked for Microsoft with the Xbox 360. Of course, the PS3 is a vastly superior console. I think there is a chance of Sony veering towards the tactics of Microsoft. On the other hand, Sony have a great history for brilliant hardware and not rushing releases.
More rumours.......

II-zOoLoGy-II- The PS3 is not "vastly superior" to the XBOX. They offer extremely similar performance. Some games run better on the PS3 while others perform much poorer on it (in comparison with the 360.) From media features and peripheral support perspective, the 360 IS "vastly superior" to the PS3. Even with Playstation+ the PS3 is poor in comparison. The ONLY thing PS3 has over the 360 is Blu-Ray; which doesn't really matter anymore since we are in the transition to digital copies.
Personally, I will most likely only be buying the next generation of XBOX.
-Kinect, media, Windows integration, better network, exclusives (Forza, Halo), smartglass, etc etc.
However, I do hope Sony comes out with a great console if only to push console technology further in competition with Microsoft. But, I am not holding my breathe for "cutting-edge" technology. It just will not happen at the price point of a console.
The PS3 has many things that make it better than the 360. It has the best exclusives including Gran Turismo, Uncharted, Killzone, Resistance, Infamous, Motorstorm, God of War, Socom, Little Big Planet, Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank and many more.
The controllers are much better IMO.
The failure rate of the PS3 is much lower than the 360; at one point it was at 54.2%.
The graphics are also better. Bluray discs are much better and can hold much more data so you don't need multiple discs for one game. The network is better because it is free and still works great( I don't care about party chat). If you get PS+ it will save you a lot of money with the free games. I don't see how the 360 is better than the PS3 in almost anyway.
motorazaHow is the online more stable? The online gameplay of each console is identical, the only difference is that ps3 is free.
E28Also, Xbox Live wasn't down for months like PSN...
Firstly, it wasnt down for months. Secondly, they gave us free stuff, which more than compensated for the down-time. Also, the Xbox Live was hacked in something like 2009, which shows that originally, the ps3's network was much stronger that xbox's, since it took a couple of years more to hack the ps3.

motorazaI can see your viewpoint, but barely any credit card details were stolen, just an extremely small minority. Also, Sony made people change their password, so at least they have really boosted their security now.
According to Wikipedia (didn't check the individual sources):How many were stolen.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Network_outage#cite_note-autogenerated1-25On May 2, 2011, Sony issued a press release, according to which the Sony Online Entertainment services had been taken offline for maintenance due to potentially related activities during the initial criminal hack that caused the PlayStation Network outage. Over 12,000 credit card numbers from non-U.S. cardholders and additional information from 24.7 million SOE accounts may have been stolen.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Network_outage#cite_note-autogenerated1-25
