Project cars DLC

I agree with this. It's not the cutting of future content that's the problem, it's that they made everyone believe from before the game launched that things were coming to the game that they never got into it in the end.

It reminds me a lot of PD failing to deliver the course maker quick enough for most people to enjoy. It's just another in a long line of PR blunders. The worst part of it for them is getting people to trust them on their next game.

I still love Pcars, but I'm massively disappointed that it won't become as good as it deserved to be. I'll be doing the same thing with 2 that I will be with the next GT game. Not buying it day 1, just waiting to find out if it's worth it first.

I think Ian and devs actually thought that they could add this stuff. I think they found out that their game engine has limitations and they found out the hard way. There is a reason why every time something was added or changed it didnt go 100% smooth

Only read this page of the forum today, so what's the script with Project Cars? Are we getting more DLC in the future or not?

We will, but a lot has been scrapped and moved to Project Cars 2, like the rest of the historic tracks (Monza, Spa, Solitude), custom championship editor and possibly ovals, since they are struggling with the Ai.

Overall reaction by SMS:
"Well... gotta buy the next full price game, lolol"

DLC stops in 4 months. No classic Spa or Solitude. Ovals a 50% chance.

Thanks mate. Classic Spa I'm indifferent about, Solitude would have been good for a change of the usual racing game tracks, the Laguna BTCC I'm gutted about and the ovals I don't care much for unless there's licenced NASCAR cars to use on them. Just glad that isn't the end of the DLC.

I can't complain about the DLC they've given us so far, really good and at a great price. Announcing things they can't deliver though is daft.

The best thing SMS could have done is stayed silent about future DLC and features. Then we wouldn't be outraged since no one would know. Also, the DLC would be a surprise and not leaked early on, thus no hype :).
I find it amazing that a company would announce content without knowing it can be delivered. That is always going to end badly as it is, without being rude, just plain stupid.

This is pretty much the root of the problem. Why announce a car like the Laguna touring car knowing fine well that they would have problems sourcing one to get data from? Surely you hold off any announcement until it's 100% going to be in the game. Then with the tracks as well, I personally don't find it a huge deal if they replace them with an alternative but people will get sceptical about the reasons, especially since Pcars 2 has been announced and they'll undoubtedly show up in that game.

Does anyone actually believe pCARS 2 will have all this stuff in it? I don't.

I guess that all depends on what you think "all this stuff" is exactly. You read the official forums some people have way over the top thinking, and they all have to have it. Time will tell its 2 years away.

I will say that will take the devs statements and the WMD video's with a grain of salt.

Yeah I agree mate, it was becoming more and more apparent with each patch that the way they've coded the engine is a bit of a mess for adding things to. It seemed like every time they tried to add things the community wanted, it would take ages and end with "well we tried, but it's just too hard".

I find it kind of odd they ended up with a game coded in such a way that trying to add any features would break it, since it was meant to be built from the ground up with the community's input in mind lol. I just hope they've learned a valuable lesson from all of this, and build the next one from the ground up to be more patch-friendly and expandable.

As far as the content goes though, from Ian's response to me it seems they didn't want to fork out for a licence for any more DLC tracks in Pcars 1, as he was saying some places wanted the licence paid twice to use the historic version too. He was obviously talking about Spa or Monza, perhaps both, and this tells me the DLC isn't selling well, otherwise it'd be a worthwhile investment.

My guess is they've lost too many users because of all the bugs and stability issues, and the DLC isn't selling as well as they'd projected, so they've made the decision to move some of the more expensive content to Pcars 2, where they hope it will attract more buyers.

Also, from the look of it, if ovals do come, they will be time trial and online only. AI was the reason given for Ian's doubts about the ovals coming, and when asked if they could perhaps release them for online and time trial only to avoid the AI issues, Ian said that was his "cunning plan".

Same as any other game, buy it for what is in it at launch, wait for reviews if you're uncertain, come to GTP and you'll know within days what the issues are with the game, if any. Anyone that pre-orders a game or buys it day 1 without waiting for reviews from users (not reviewers) is taking a small risk. Goes for any game really, but from past history I suspect many sim racers will be extra cautious when it comes to Project Cars 2 for various reasons.

People are safe here in Australia with the major game retailers, they give you a 5 day? Full refund return policy,

It'd be a good time to pick up the game now. Forget digital copies on PS4, they're still full price, but hard copies at places like EB, they've had tons of returns over the months, you can find hardly played pre-owned copies for $15

And at the same time developers like PD are being roasted for doing exactly this (staying silent). So from a devs perspective it really doesn't matter how you go about it: you will get roasted either way. So in reality, there is no right way to do this. Stay silent: get flamed. Be transparent: get flamed.

I'd rather have a developer being open and being disappointed a few times along the way. At least this opens up the way of communication.

They really can't afford not to release oval tracks in one form or the other after all the marketing and hype that went it.

As for PC2: I don't expect that until late 2017 at the earliest to be honest.

Releasing the ovals as online and time trial only will still only satisfy some of the people that are hanging out for them. There will be people who bought the game on the promise of oval racing being a significant part of the game, and those people aren't likely to be happy hotlapping offline being the only offline use for ovals, especially when you consider the many coming soon icons in the career that are now going to disappear like the one on the main menu.

I agree with you on your point about they're damned if they do and damned if they don't when it comes to communication, but the real problem wasn't them communicating with the fans, it was committing to features they didn't know for a fact they could deliver. In any industry that's a major failure, and in some countries it's against the law to advertise features for a product that the product can't, and never will be able to, do.

Edit: To clarify, I'm not saying I expect anyone to take legal action over it, I'm just stating, that at the very least, if they don't provide the features, they're in breach of Australian consumer law, and Australians could actually get a full refund from it. No doubt it's against the laws of some other countries too.

Or deliver on your promises and build a good brand.

Is anybody really gonna be happy with ovals in online racing with those sucky magnetic collisions between cars? Guess it will be ovals for hotlapping only then, if they come...

Oh and about the Laguna BTCC being apparently unavailable for references. Well, with 30 seconds of googling you can find a Laguna BTCC that is used in hillclimbs since 2010 and located close to one of SMS empoyees. http://www.wiebe-motorsport.de/cms/content/blogcategory/10/13/ There also was another one at Goodwood 2014: http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2014/06/29/non-f1-cars-2014-goodwood-festival-speed/renault-laguna-btcc/

Yeah I found the whole Laguna debacle a bit suspicious. I thought "how could it be too hard to find a reference car for that, they should be able to find one in their backyard being that it's a BTCC car". Look at how rare some of the cars PD got their hands on were, and I know they've got much more money, but still, the Laguna would be so much easier than many of the rare cars in GT games.

SmS skipping the need of licensing fees, that's all. Same reason probably why they scrapped already created, historic tracks instead of polishing them from beta to a final release state. Just call them "Belgian Forest" or something if you want to get them into the game cheap, JESUS BLOODY CHRIST :yuck:

I remember the PS2 game "Racing Simulation 3" where Hockenheim ended up beeing the polish Grand Pix... :D

For sure many of the older BTCC cars are available for referencing, as you can see from this YT video of the "Super Touring Car Championship" that was revived last year and has been going this year too. And as you can see, a Renault Laguna has been taking part the whole time!

On a seperate note, how cool would these cars be in the game? SMS/WMD you have missed out on a big money spinner by not including some of these cars! :(

I remember a PS1 or PS2 game that had, "Road U.S.A" and "Road Geargia"

If the ovals come with road courses it will be extremely enticing, and even with the magnetising between cars its not really that big of a deal on an oval, because if wheels get tangled 11 out of 10 times both cars end up in the wall,

How is that not a big deal?

Thing is, when you're in R&D that's pretty much standard. You're doing stuff that's never been done before. The real problem is that they technically painted themselves in a corner so to speak. I'm quite sure they were able to deliver on their promises earlier in the whole process, but optimizations, features, etc. made it impossible at a later date. So I think it's not so much a communication issue, but their development process being broken (not just QA, but dev/design/vision as well).

Its dumb luck when cars touch, specially open wheelers touch on an oval that it doesn't end in disaster,
@HammyMansell I never knew those cars where competing again. That's some of my Christmas Eve viewing sorted then.

Saying they couldn't source the car is BS and a cop-out. I wonder if that video has been posted on the PCars forum.

My entire Christmas eve day has been filled with silence, cold beers and 9 races out of the 20 that made up the C.A.R.T world series from 1999, heavenly

Yes mate, only sadly they don't show all rounds of this series. This one off live showing from 2014 was live on ITV4, alongside the regular BTCC/Support races. It was great seeing the cars again, and imho they still look better that the current BTCC cars.

Yeah I'd say that's a part of it too. Really I think it's been a perfect storm of factors that have led to this recent wave of disappointing news. At least they finally came clean I guess. Would've pissed people off more if they had strung us all along into the new year expecting all this stuff.

I just watched 2 of those races and it was pure nostalgia. Wonderful stuff. Thanks a million for posting that video as it was like a little Christmas pressie.

Turns out the guy who owns the Laguna BTCC has 2 of them. 2! In the UK. SMS must not have tried too hard to source it. I guess we got 2 cool cars instead of 1 so it's not all bad.

Hopefully it makes it into a BTCC 1990s Pack for PCars2.
