So nearly all of you have been on this road?! Then my "I'm da man" mood kicks in! :D
Yes I'm sure we all have. I started using standard transmission in Nascar 03 by Sierra Papyrus back in the good old PC days. It takes time, don't give up.

We don't want no cans, buddy! ;)
All good. My word correction gets me crazy all the time.
Stupid phone and auto correct,on PC now.

I played that too. How lovely the graphics were at that times. I was so fascinated after having hours of playing frogger or prince of Persia. :)

I do most of my comments on iPhone. Like 90% of the time. I have to switch between German and Englisch all the time. That makes it even harder.
Not it hard a shifting though. ;)

It gets really confusing when you can activate german AND english for your keyboard. After writing something on gtplanet and switch to whatsapp my phone always corrects "im" to "I'm"..which goes me on my nerves quite badly (this is a german saying btw)

I don't like that "looking into the corner thing". But i do like the wobble and motion stuff. But I'll stick with regular cockpit cam I think. For better lap times bumper cam and for immersion cockpit cam!
As I mentioned earlier, if you get used to it, I don't think you give up any speed in cockpit cam. Your vision is more limited of course, but like anything else you adapt.

As a child I was spurred to use manual transmission by '80s/'90s arcade racers in which manual offered a higher top speed as a bonus. I also just learned to enjoy shifting the 4-speeds on games like Daytona USA, San Francisco Rush, or Cruisin' USA. Some games included a clutch pedal, though it usually wasn't required.

The ultimate shift-it-yourself coin-op experience was the deluxe cabinet for Ferrari F355 Challenge. It had triple screens, the Ferrari V8 shrieking in your ears via surround speakers, and a gated 5-speed shifter with a lockout mechanism that prevented you from shifting if you didn't use the clutch (if it wasn't broken by some oaf before you). It even had assists you could toggle and warning messages for novices who were liable to get in over their heads.

As a former arcade employee, I'm positive the cabinet cost as much as a new car and never brought in enough revenue to justify its costly and excessive hardware. It looks like you could get one on eBay today for just $3500, though.

Maybe that will make some of you PC guys feel better about what you've invested into your sim racing setups. :)

Not true,my 65 Impala 3 speed will not let you shift to first if you are above 10 MPH. On most cars, shifting into full blown redline is not a recommended thing to do. Unless you want to have a good transmission or engine shop around to pick up the parts. I believe in this game you can have fatal damage, blowing up an engine by redlining it,would make sense.

Pro do you have GT6? Go practice on that using bumper cam,it gives you a tach and speedo, plus the little red light will blink when you should shift up or down. Yes you can redline the hell out of the cars in GT6 so practice with that.
I didn't say all cars :P. I can't get it into first at around 40 km/h myself either, actually, but from what I've heard I could have forced it from 4th to 2nd while at pretty high revs, but I'm not really going to test that theory. I like having a car.

Is this the game default settings or your custum settings ? Just woundering
Right now it is adjustable and iirc it will be in the final game. There are also other options like g-force which also effect the head movement.

Now that's an arcade cabinet! :D Never seen them in the flesh...

I did get the PS2 version of this game since the 355 is my dream car (in the semi realistic category). Unfortunately I think that must count as my greatest gaming disappointment: I went from completely stoked to binning the game in 10 minutes, as it had large non-optional deadzone for the steering wheel which made it undriveable for me. Many years later the System 3 Ferrari game for PS3 was launched. Once again fully stoked, I went out and got the game only to discover that System 3 also thought it was a good idea to force a large steering deadzone... (why, oh why do people destroy an otherwise accomplished large body of work with a crazy thing like that:banghead:).

Good thing I had GTR2 and Race 07 up and running for my Ferrari fix. I've been aching for a proper sim with a 355 ever since. If I win the lottery I'm buying the license for a certain sim studio :dopey:

Are those adjustments only possible in cockpit view?

Yeah, it's almost like saying... "We have this awesome game, but the controls suck so you can't play the game :dopey: ". It's really very counterproductive in my eyes as well... a game you can't play. They might've well made a CG movie instead for general gaming promotion purposes.

Thank you guys for pushing me in the right direction. I'll give it a try. I promise. But I tried before... and sucked. I'll report on that.
Try keeping count of the gear you are in, say it in your head, every gear change. It helps you get into a rhythm also. Start on a short track so the corners a close together ;)

What? I too have been in love with that car for at least 15 years.

First racing game I started using MT was NFS 2, back in 1997. I always enjoyed racing games in general, arcade, simcade or sims alike (although haven't played that many sims as I only got a wheel back in 2010 and by then hadn't had a proper PC to race any of the available sims). I now got to the point where I dropped NFS games completely since NFS Hot Pursuit came out without an option of MT...

why and how have so many people got access to the game. are they beta testing ? it seems like theres alot copies floating about !
If I recall correctly, there was a fairly active Shift 2 community here and Ian Bell himself mentioned here about the WMD site and Project CARS (C.A.R.S. as it was called at the time), so I guess a lot of people (myself included) made the move. 👍

Really? Would love to read the announcement from back then!

That picture gave me goosebumps, I drove the exact setup close to 15 years ago almost daily ( along with Battle Gear ), winning all the races. The gated H-shifter, pedals, and steering wheel is still one of the best I have ever played ( the way they feel and feedback ). Heel and toe was magic in the Ferrari F355, best played with no assist ( pro mode ) My favorite tracks were Long Beach, Sugo, Fiorano, Nurburgring and Suzuka ( I think the cabinet had International Course Edition at some point ) You can even adjust the seat :D Imagine such setup on latest games like Pcars or AC.

So today I sat down with gt5 for 1.5 hours to practice shifting. I set a lap time like I was used to with automatic shifting (gtr 07, soft racing tires, abs 1) on monza.
Then I switched to manual shifting and to my surprise I beat my time by 1 sec. :D
I will do this again tonight with another car. First I gotta eat. I'll report.

I tried again on monza. One time with the Audi r8: I got nearly the same time for auto and manual. Second time Audi tt: nearly the same times as well.

I have to work hard, I can tell you guys. But it's fun.
As the shifting points are different, I have to learn so much. But I feel like... how to describe... like I drive more professional, like I accomplished something. It's a good feeling. But when I think about driving with other users, I think it's becoming more of a challenge for me to watch them and overtake (not get overtaken)!
I restarted and restarted again... So many times I forgot about time. It's crazy, but very fun!

Is that only for helmet cam? I like the functionality but i don't like the helmet and visor in front of my face, so if you could use the 'look to apex' function in normal cockpit cam:

AC has it, it's one of the better mods 👍
