PS3 General Discussion

news form IGN... the game is lair... and the preview is awesome...

IGN: Quick Fanboy wars question -- Could Lair be done under its current spec on the Xbox 360? If so, why go with the PlayStation 3 "only" instead of going cross-platform?

Eggebrecht: Lair in its current form couldn't be done on 360. We are using large amounts of Cell's SPUs for all of our geometry, landscape, simulations, animations, even troop AI. When we create a game, we absolutely focus on the platform it is designed around. Would we do one for 360, it would be a different game and a different engine -- most crucially perhaps though: Lair is an entirely different game without the motion control and gesture recognition since it was designed around it.

IGN: What advantage does Blu-ray afford you now? Everyone talks about how great the extra storage space is but are you actually using it for Lair?

Eggebrecht: The single level at TGS alone takes up 4 Gigabytes of data. We are using every ounce of that due to streaming of our textures. Sure you could chop them all down to tiny sizes and we would fit, but then again, it would not be the same game. In addition to all the textures and geometry, we also do have video on the disc, and all of that is in native 1080p resolution. Thanks to Blu-Ray we don't need to worry about that and can still fit the whole game on a single disk.

pretty cool...

did anybody notice that in sony´s keynote speech they said all models would ship with HDMI? and also, the 20gig version will sale in japan under 50,000 yen... previously was 59,800...

so, the big announcment is a price drop?

ign, eurogamer and 1up posted this coming from kutaragi´s speech...

can´t wait to hear more

I can't believe no one mentioned that the 20GB model got a price drop in Japan, and now all models feature HDMI, in all territories.

because i´m busy trying to sort out that info. SCEA confirmed to 1up that indee all models will ship with HDMI, so no more tard pack talk.

20 gig PS3, here i come!

the price drop will take affect initially only in japan, according to the report.

this is huge news, the first bomb coming from TGS

Hmmm, if the 20GB version comes with HDMI, I'll buy that. 'Cause, I plan to replace the HD with a bigger drive in the first few months I have the PS3, anyway. Then, not having a card reader ain't that big of a deal, since any of us can purchase a USB multi card reader for about $20 (though Mr.Deap would probably pay $45 for his).

But, what bugs me is not having WiFi. Even though I don't need it now, I might need it the future. But, I can add that on later, too. Right? And, for how much?

You can add Wifi via either the network connection (like a generic access point for gaming as offered from Linksys) or you can purchase a USB adapter for Wifi, as will probably be made available near launch.

See? What the hell do I need to worry about, then? I don't. NBD.

I was thinking, since my PC does not have a card reader, I was going to purchase one, anyway. Now, I can use the same multi card reader for both machines. Plug it in to the PS3 and and get a game save. Unplug it from the PS3 and into my PC and download a game save or other file. That should work out fine.

Minute-by-minute details about the TGS keynote.

IGN
TGS 2006: Live From the Sony Keynote
Kutaragi outlines Sony's plans for the PlayStation 3.
by IGN Staff
September 21, 2006 - Last year, the Tokyo Game Show kicked off with a keynote address by Nintendo's Satoru Iwata, who introduced the world to the then Revolution's unique remote-like controller.

This year, it's Sony Computer Entertainment's chance to deliver the PlayStation 3 message. SCE president Ken Kutaragi is headlining the show with a 10:00AM keynote address. The father of the PlayStation will discuss the types of entertainment that can be delivered on the PlayStation 3.

Hopefully, that means lots of Metal Gear and Final Fantasy footage.

We'll be updating live from the keynote address. Keep checking this space for updates.

All times are Pacific Standard.

5:27pm: We're waiting to get into the conference right now. Here's a picture of a sign.

5:37: At long last, they've let us into the keynote hall. Kutaragi's speech doesn't begin until 10:00am (that would be 6:00pm Pacific time), but here's a picture of a sign.

6:10: The keynote is beginning with a sensational introduction from the CESA (the organizers of TGS).

6:11: Ken Kutaragi set to speak about "PS3 Creating Next Generation of Computer Entertainment." He takes the stage and thanks CESA and Nikkei BP (the latter is a sponser of the show).

6:12: Sony has brought over 200 PS3 systems to the event.

6:15: Kutaragi shows a set of trailers

1. Ridge Racer 7: Looks fast and fun, with clear graphics. At a glance, it looks more impressive than the Ridge Racer 6, but I'll have to see both to compare.

2. Virtua Fighter 5: I'm not sure if the trailer is from the PS3 version or not, as I think I 've seen it before. Whatever the case, the PS3 version is said to look identical to the arcade version, so there probably wouldn't be a difference.

6:19: More trailers:

3. Gundam: Target in Sight: The environments are much improved. There's a beach-level with gorgeous water and forestry. The mechs look exactly like they did in the early footage.

4. Final Fantasy XIII: Appears to be the same trailer as was shown at E3

6:20: The trailers have finished. The reason these clips were chosen was because Kutaragi wanted to show how far the game industry has advanced since the original PlayStation was released.

6:24: Kutaragi is going on and on about computers and changes in technology and networking and servers the likes. He hasn't used the term "4D" yet.

6:27: Kutaragi is sharing his vision on networking. We'll be uploading the keynote speech later on today so you can see for yourself what he says (and if you understand it, please send us an e-mail with an explanation).

6:49: The keyword for Sony is innovation. Without innovation, the industry won't move forward. Kutaragi believes creativity should be the basis of the computer industry.

Kutaragi feels that networking is not at the point where it needs to be. Servers haven't reached the internal bus speed of the first generation PlayStation. They don't have sufficient power to carry out the computations at the level of the PlayStation 2.

In ten years, it's possible that something like the PlayStation 3 will be overkill because servers will be so powerful.

6:59: He makes a mention of emulated games on the PlayStation 3. Users will be able to play emulated games, which is something he talked about back at the time of the time of the PlayStation 2's announcement. He specifically makes mention today of Mega Drive and PC Engine title, but this isn't confirmation that games from these systems will be available on the PS3.

Kutaragi also mentions YouTube style downloads -- people uploading their own videos. Again, he's not talking about specific network features for the system, just sharing something Sony is interested in doing.

Sony will have 15,000 PS3 units installed in shop fronts throughout the world. Sony wants to have these connected via network and then used as promotional tools -- it's currently speaking with retailers about this.

Sony is considering having the retail kiosks used as arcade-style units, so people can pay 100 yen or so to play a game.

7:04: He says Sony will take the initiative to lead the next 10 years of gaming. He expects the PS3 to play an important part in the movement. "I feel very pleased to be involed with the PlayStation 3."

7:05: Another trailer sequence is starting! Woo-Hoo!

7:07: The trailer sequence was just one trailer -- for Afrika.

The trailer starts off with a bunch of clips of animals. A group of elephants -- young and old. The camera pans out to reveal hundrdes of wild animals. Then, a scene of giraffes against the setting sun. We then see predators eating their prey, then hippos, rhinos -- all sorts of wild life. Finally, a cheeta chasing down its prey.

We're still not sure what the game is about. However, at the very end of the clip, we see a person in a car looking out on the landscape. This seems to be a hint as to the nature of the game.

The footage is all real time and has overwhelming detail, from the animal models to the environments, with individual blades of grass. You'll definitely want to check out the trailer when it goes online.

7:11: They're preparing for a Q&A session now.

7:15: The Q&A session is just a guy from Nikkei BP asking Kutaragi questions. Assuming he asks any game related questions (something that doesn't deal with Kutaragi's wild visions of the PS3 rendering human beings from bacteria), we'll let you know.

7:21: Question about further delay of the PS3's manufacturing. Kutaragi apologizes for the shiping problems, but says they're working hard.

7:22: A question on why HDMI only is in the high level version of the PS3 only. Kutaragi explains that sony was worried that if they put the HDMI in the lower version, some would complain about having to pay for something they don't want. However, HDMI penetration has come faster than expected. He then asks people if they want HDMI in all models. Everyone in the audience says yes. He then confirms that all models, including the 20 gig version, will have an HDMI port.

From what we can tell, this is only for Japan. You'll have to wait for overseas confirmation to see if this applies in your territory as well.

7:25: Now a question on the price. Kutaragi says the Japanese media and retailers have complained about the cost of the system. He then confirms that the price for the 20 gig model in Japan will, including tax, now be below 50,000 yen. This model will include the HDMI port. He doesn't give the exact price.

7:30: The keynote comes to an end.

Also, here's the official boxart for Fall of Man.

The boxes look quite good now, I didnt like the Playstation 3 bit down the side originally but its grown on me as long as the boxes are see through blue and black they will look amazing.....

Sorry, small things like this matter to me..... I want to look at them on my shelf!

IGN is so stupid, I'm almost positive that was not Sony's press conference, it was just the keynote opener speach for TGS, like they have every year...we'll see.

Looks better than suspected, I can't wait for this to sell alongside the PS3 console in November. Who else is considering this title?

Definately a Halo-killer for Sony.

Duċk;2426706
GT5 is a working title. It'll probably be released late 2008.

I think GT5 will look pretty much like that. Polyphony cannot fake graphic as much like they've done on PS2 or on the PS.

The overall graphic is much better than all the XBOX 360 title & it run in 1080P. What can you ask more?

Duċk;2427185
Umm, PGR3 looks better than GTHD Premium, from cars to the tracks. And 1080p is a feature that not many people will use.

I'll have to disagree there. I'm quite sure that a good amount of people that can afford 600$ for the PS3 can afford for a decent HDTV with 1080P resolution.
