PS3 General Discussion

Seems rather odd that Sony's most recent million+ seller on the PS2 won't work on the PS3. Maybe its a cruel way to force people to buy GT:HD. I'm assuming games that gave the PS2 problems won't like the PS3 either, as well.

with GT4, the screen may freeze during title demo, but the game is till playable. I think these issues will be fixed in future firmware update, so no big deal there.

If GT4 really isn't backwards compatible I bet thats deliberate to try to push more sales of GT:HD.

From what I read at IGN (I didn't post it because I assumed all of you would get into a tizzy and call me and IGN MS-biased), GT4 sometimes freezes at the title screen, like Kenji said. However, there's something fishy going on, IMO.

PS3's anyone?

Erm, your "pic" isn't working...

EDIT:

GameSpot
GameStop not getting enough PS3s to fill preorders
Retailer's launch allocations not expected to cover original batch of reservations; employees "asked" to wait until second shipment to buy systems.

Last month, retailer GameStop began accepting "limited" preorders for the PlayStation 3, asking customers to put down $100 in advance for the system, with a modest expectation of eight units per store in most cases. Now it appears the largest gaming specialty chain in North America won't be receiving even that many systems.

A GameStop representative told GameSpot today that the company received launch allocation numbers from Sony, and that it won't be able to fill its existing PS3 preorders. The representative declined to comment on how many systems GameStop expected to receive, or how short of that figure the company's share of systems would be.

"We are beginning to notify our customers that our initial shipment of PS3 systems will not be what we expected," the representative said. "As this is not an ideal situation, we are asking employees to wait to purchase systems until the second shipment. We are anticipating having systems to cover reservations before Christmas."

For launch day, preorders will be filled in the order they were received, and those who had a preorder but are denied a system on day one will receive something for their troubles. GameStop will give those unfortunate customers (as well as unfortunate employees) a free used game or DVD valued at $19.99 or less when they eventually wind up purchasing the system.

Those who reserved a system won't need to wait long to find out if they can expect a system on launch day. Starting tomorrow, customers who preordered a PS3 will be contacted personally by phone and updated on the status of their reservation, the rep said.

And while it might be a nonissue considering the clamor for consumers to get their hands on the coveted systems, GameStop is also asking anyone with a confirmed preorder to pick their systems up by Saturday evening.

Didnt work for me either. Although I got frustrated and pressed refresh and the "back" button heaps and now it loads! 👍

Just a heap of PS3 boxes.... yay

Still waiting for some hands on reviews........

Wow, I love the pics of it dissassembled! Looks as good as the insides of the PS2 looked..... I love the way they label all the chips with the edgy font, its almost like they want you to admire its insides aswell! I also see that the cooling setup is much like modern PC graphics cards it has a large fan top mounted with heatpipes transferring the heat to fins around its radius blowing the het away... good stuff, should hopefully be silent!

Nice to also see Sony condone replacing your six axis battery (as they let you open it and its just molex plugged in) and also swap your HDD, Its cool they are giving you a Seagate 60GB, one of the best brands out there!

But there are still some questions that I have that I dont know can be, or have been answered yet by the press of other people...

1) What the deal with region free..... So far we know the console is region free (im not talking about blue ray movies and such) but the games may not be, which means importing is a gamble because you may not be able to play some lets say UK PS3 games on your Japaniese PS3..... I saw on the PS3 box that it says NTSC J on it! So effectively its not region free?? Can someone clarify all this!

2) Where is the console made! Ok to some this may not be important but basically every PS2 made in Japan had better build quality and used better parts and hardly ever (and in my case never and I own 2) broke down or had D.R.E's, after about 3 years they switched production to China and all those had alot of problems, the lazers went all the time etc etc. For the PS3 Sony claimed that they would be making the PS3 in China from the start which worried me, however on the PS3 box shot it says Made In Japan..... so is it made in Japan?? Because in that case ive got to get one made there before they source out production elsewhere...... no offense to China but with it been such a high tech piece of kit I would prefer it to be made by Sony in Japan..... This has got to last like 6-10 years and I dont really want any problems.....

Can anyone shed any light on these questions, it would be really great, thanks!

The backwards compatability issue doesn't bother me in the slightest. If I were to play my older Playstation games I'd use my PS2. Maybe it's an issue for those without a PS2 anymore or those who do not have enough connections on their tv for a PS2 and PS3 etc.
This issue was first raised last year sometime. Sony brought out a silver slim PS2 which had backwards compatability issues and its the hardware in that PS2 that's been put into the PS3.

You all do realize these issues a minimal right? LIke it MIGHT freeze during the title demo (meaning if you don't touch it and let the demo run, it's possible to freeze). So far, the list of titles that are unplayable is pretty small. In fact, most of all of these problems are related to sound.

200 titles are unplayable, unless you can live without sound.

Beacuse you've obviously played them right? You are SO genius. You annoy the hell out of me.

Most of the titles have SMALL SOUND ISSUES. My friend who lives in Tokyo at the moment has his Japanese PS3, and out of the 47 games he tested, 20 had a problem. The problem? Most of them simply didn't have sound during the title menu, and didn't function correctly with DD 5.1 during cutscenes. Other issues include sound break up during a lot of voices, i.e. when there's a lot of action and different sounds. Another small issue is simple sound processing, having an odd reverb. However, the issues are minor.

If you figure that MASSIVE AMOUNT of no name Japanese titles are a huge hit. Let me put it like this.

Right now, Sony published a known list of 196 titles out of a whopping 8,000 that don't work. For thsoe who are math impared...that's around 2%.

98% Compatibility is good enough, and offers PLENTY of room for a firmware upgrade to fix all of those minor problems.

Tt least many of them will be fixed with firmware update.

It's kinda fun to see people around the net are making such a big deal when PS3 can't play few of PS2 titles. They didn't act this way with 360's ability to scratch 360 games, overheating, and its supper crappy backward compatibility.

What's funny is thus far in the video game industry, the only company to offer even BC support has been Nintendo with it's Gameboy consoles, and even those were never 100% (often times closer to 95-98%), other than that, Sony has been the industry top dog.

Not to bring politics into this. But that's a very accurate description of politics in Maryland.

I think sony said around 99% of the games would work back at E306, I guess the media and other Sony haters can call then lairs with broken promises if the number turned out to be 98%. By the way True Emulation is comming in the future. and the need for the EE/GS will be abolished.

I just drove by the Best Buy near me.... there had to have been at least a couple dozen tents in front.

OK... I can sort of understand why those without a job or family might be willing to camp out in hopes of getting a PS3... but what blew me away was that on the news last night what I thought was coverage of one of the lines waiting to get a PS3, was actually a line of campers waiting several days in the front of the new IKEA store?!?!?!?!?!

Then they went on to interview several of the people camped out, and they were all adults, several with children....and had been camping out several days to be one of the first customers?!?!?!?!

For what you might ask? An inexpensive chair to the first 50, and a chance at up to a $250 gift cirtificate... Some needs to call Family Services on these IKEA fanatics!

Or at least an intervention to get them on an IKEA 12-step program.

It made me think of David Fincher's brilliant film, Fight Club.

Don't worry, I get annoyed too. Do you want a drink? :P

Sorry, I don't have some huge massive gamer network to get hands-on info from like you do. If I knew they were minor things like that, then I wouldn't have complained as much. But since Sony's response to this problem is to "live without sound", I assumed the worst.

If you figure that MASSIVE AMOUNT of no name Japanese titles are a huge hit. Let me put it like this.

Well, when games like Tekken 5, GT4, Silent Hill 2, etc etc, those kind of titles have problems (however minor they may be, I expect my game to work perfectly, and yes I know it still beats the hell out of the 360's compatibilty), they're still problems.

Right now, Sony published a known list of 196 titles out of a whopping 8,000 that don't work. For thsoe who are math impared...that's around 2%.

I know that. It still easily trumps the 360's compatibility, but I want my patch for GT4. :indiff:
Or sextuple-layer discs, capable of holding 200 GB of information.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc

You mean octuple? ;)

My opinion with all these large sizes is that anything above 50 GB (maybe 75 or 100 for games like Final Fantasy where they need all the space they can get) is a pissing contest. The extra space Blu-ray provides probably won't be utilized very well by multi-platform games, except when a developer/publisher such as EA is pro-PS3 and decides to throw in some extra content. It's pretty much for titles like Resistance and Lair and Motorstorm where they're going all out because they're developing for one console (and even still they'll probably use the space just for the fact they can). And speaking of Motorstorm, I played it at Target today, and I'll post my impressions in a few minutes...

Ok, my Motorstorm and PS3 impressions...

With Motorstorm, the graphics are just great. Tons of detail, tons of cars on the "road", etc etc. Easily the best looking PS3 launch game. However, I did notice that there were a lot of jaggies. And the framerate was just not smooth at all. The videos made it look as smooth as PGR3, but for me, it was just choppy. Even with only a few cars on screen, the framerate varies as much as TDU. It's not as huge of a deal as I make it out to be, but I was surprised about it, and it didn't leave a good taste in my mouth. The crashes were awesome. But after a few times you just want to get back to racing like in Burnout Revenge.

The gameplay, well, it's okay. Maybe it was because I was physically standing up playing it, or that it seems like slow-mo, especially when you getting up to speed after a crash without using boost. Or maybe it's because of the controller and it's jacked up triggers. And that brings me to this rant.

The triggers aren't comfortable. After holding it down accelerating in Motorstorm, my right index finger hurt. Not to mention unless you keep your finger at the top of the trigger, your finger slips off it pretty easily. Maybe I need to glue it to the trigger. But then again, I shouldn't have to glue my finger to it because Sony didn't design it the way it should be designed. For the weight of the controller, it was light, but that's because a big metal piece keeping it in place, so I can't really make an accurate judgement about it. I wasn't a fan of the DS2 design in the first place, so I'll probably end up buying a 3rd party contoller.

Now, when I tried to exit the demo, I tried the common sense thing: press the PlayStation button in the middle of the controller. Well, nothing happened. I tried again. Nothing again. So, I hold it down for 5 seconds like if I were to shut down my 360, and finally a question asking me if I wanted to quit the demo popped up. I chose yes, and it brought me back to the XMB. I was expecting the XMB to pop-up right away when I pressed the PS button so I could go to the internet browser while playing a game, but that never happened. Ah well.

As for the console exterior itself, it's very beautiful, one of the most beautiful pieces of technology ever, IMO. Even if Sony can't produce a TV commercial, at least they can design game hardware very well. ;)

Overall, the PS3 is nice and all, but there's no way in hell I'd spend $600 for it. Motorstorm is also nice, and when I get a PS3 many years down the road, I might pick it up, or it's sequel if it ever gets made (with hopefully a better framerate), I'd probably buy it. However, I have absolutely no desire to get one.

I'd rate the whole experience 6/10, maybe 7/10. If the PS3 was a lot cheaper (like $200 cheaper), then it'd be an 8/10 or possibly 9/10.

Thats quite interesting. Im sure I saw a forum "scrap" earlier where someone thought that at the anlge those triggers were at that you're fingers would slip off. Following that were a whole heap of "phsyco's" stating that Sony wouldnt produce it if your fingers slipped off (cause that would be just stupid wouldnt it)..... ahh well.

Semi-dissappointing about the gaming, I was kind of expecting nothing but perfect reviews based on everyones ranting about the PS3 and how awesome it is etc.

Hopefully Ill see some more positive looking review (for my sake if anything) :guilty:

I just drove by the Best Buy near me.... there had to have been at least a couple dozen tents in front.

Not here in SoCal. The campers from last week Wednesday were run off on last week Friday. Best Buy has a policy that states you are not allowed to camp out in front of the store until the night before. Those guys were pissed, but they said they were warned not to come so early. The police had to be called to remove them. He-he.

Use the "Frito Bandito" version; it's funnier.

Damn it, I just paid for a two year subscription not more than 9-10 months ago. I better get my money back.

Why, if there were shutting it down, did they still have renewal slips in the magazine?
