PS3 General Discussion

PS3 CALIBRATION TIP:

While messing around with my PS3 I found a way to improve standard DVD playback image quality for DVDs with above average transfers.

The default setting for "Image Quality Adjustment" for both "Frame Noise Reduction" and "Block Noise Reduction" is set at "2".

While a setting of "2" or even higher can help minimize "noise" from poor quality DVDs, it will actually lower the image quality from DVDs with excellent transfers that have little to no video noise.

To turn these both off access the onscreen control menu (triangle); highlight "Image Quality Adjustment"; press "X"; set both to "OFF".

BTW: For those that haven't already, be sure to bookmark Sony's updated online PS3 manual link:

http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/index.html

(currently for version 1.31, but older manuals for earlier system software are also available from that link)

Nice! Question though, how can I tell if a DVD has an "above average transfer"? :dunce:

A "good transfer" refers to picture quality...as in a good transfer from film to digital video, which is then compressed and put on DVD. The quality of each DVD release can vary widely.

+REP (because we all know you need it) ;)

Video noise artifacts mostly show up all over the image as gray 1-4 pixel sized flickering "specks". There are other transfer artifacts as well, and some artifacts can come from the film itself, and then those artifacts are what usually get exaggerated by the digital filtering process applied to telecine (film->video) transfers.

Unfortunately video quality can suffer from so many other different things, like poor processing, deinterlacing, 3:2 pulldown conversion, D/A-A/D Converters, and of course the limitations of a display itself.

From the time images are captured on film, converted to video, processed, compressed, played back, and finally displayed on your TV, the image quality can suffer greatly depending on so many different things, some of which the consumer does have control over.

I don't believe it!
So, when will there be any screenshots or video? I will be very surprised if it is released this year. But I guess it's possible. Thing is, will it be any good?

I forgot these parts...

Oh, I thought there was some super secret massive database where it ranks movies by their transfer rate. :dunce:

Personally, considering Killzone for the PSP, I think it should be pretty good. Not a Halo killer, but something that makes it wary.

Well, if Killzone is supposed to be better than Resistance, I think we'll be in for a treat. They have 120 devs and it's costing more than a movie, so I hope all of those SPEs are working to their fullest.

Okay, at first I thought this was a valid but unlikely rumor, but now I'm starting to change my mind.

Where's the 3rd party stuff? I look in the Store, and what do I see? Demos for SCEA games, SCEA downloadable games, etc etc. But no third party stuff at all. No demos, downloadable content, nothing. No Madden 07 demo. No Call of Duty 3 downloadable maps. Nothing. Just Sony stuff. This stuff has been on the XBLM for quite a while. But it's a no show on Sony's system. No trailers for Tony Hawk Project 8. Or Sonic. Nothing.

I really hope this changes soon and proves me wrong. I don't want just Sony stuff. I want all the goods, and it's disappointing that I have to go to my 360 for them.

I'm pretty sure that Genji isn't a first party title, and neither is Lemmings.

Who knows, I guess time will tell. Also, Lair and Warhawk are not first party titles.

Duck. PSN is not yet were it wants to be. XBL is a very seasoned service. A lot will change. Ridge Racer 7 is not a SCEI product and it has downloadable content in japan. also other games

Genji Days of Blade is made by Game Republic. Resistance isnt a first party game either.

Uhh...MotorStorm doesn't release Feb 1st...

It comes out the 27th.

But, Calling All Cars comes out on the 5th of Feb, and Fatal Inertia and VF5 come out later that month.

Elder Scrolls also comes out in Feb.

I downloaded the Saints Row demo for the 360, and wasn't impressed. It may be just because I'm sick of San Andreas, though, and SR is practically identical.

Speaking of Grand Theft Auto, I assume GTA4 is going to be a new engine built entirely from the ground up, and not just the old with better graphics? I hope?

It's not there now. Just says "We tried, but we just couldn't find the page you were looking for"...etc
I had heard this before but I had heard it was only a rumour. Still I would'nt be too surprised if it did show up.

Yeah, it's supposed to be using the engine from Table Tennis (which is new).

i think its the definition of market saturation when you see razr v3s being given away..., when i went in and asked about selling my ps2 with all the crap i have for it he said somthing a little over 100$ so that makes sense... i almost died until i read the "with this trade in" part of the discount
