PS3 General Discussion

I've just downloaded the new Koei "Bladestorm" demo from the Japanese PSN store. Have'nt tried it yet (it's all in Japanese :nervous: - I can speak a bit but this is a different nabe of koi).
Anyway, neoGAF has a guide (of sorts) so I'll give it a try.

Thinking about my last post, that I might get a PS3 soon if a price cut in announce. It probably won't be until next year, I forgot that right now I'm pouring into the new car fund, which I hope will be emptying at the end of this year. GT5:P is coming at a bad time for me. I guess the right side to look at, is that more games will be out by then.

I heard that!
I'm in a very similar situation (in that I will not be able to go through with a purchase until sometime later this year if not early next year).
This is all just part of the reason I don't think Sony's success (or lack of) for the rest of this year will be the serious issue that MS had claimed it would be (somewhere around here there was a quote of an MS exec saying Sony was out of the game altogether if the end of this year wasn't great for them).

In any case, sorry to hear about the tough luck.
Hopefully next year will bring you a PS3 (and a new car as well!).

Just bought a PS3 today! :D

Crappy thing is GT4 doesn't work there, says it's non-compatible...
Is there a way for it to work?

Also, are there any really good games for PS3 already?
I don't have any games for it yet and wanted to know your opinions before I decide which to get.
The only ones I know I'm buying are GT5 Prologue and the new PES.

Get your PS3 online asap.
You need to update the frimware, the updates regularly fix compatabilty issues.
GT4 was initially non compatible, but this has been fixed in the downloads.

Congratulations, I seriously doubt you'll ever regret it, it is quite an impress piece of equipment that besides playing some really great games does a remarkable job doing many other things as well, like playing Blu-ray movies, upscaling DVDs, playing SACDs, and as a general media server. 👍

GT4 works fine for me, can you give us more details?

Yes, system updates are a must! If you haven't already, go to the "Settings" menu in the XMB, and go to the top and select "System Update" and follow the directions. (or click on these links that take you to the online manual for information and instructions regarding these features) 👍

There are over 40 Blu-ray games out on the PS3, and over 15 downloadable games from the PS Stores, many of which are quite popular, but games are so subjective that one person's passion is another person's poison, and neither would be wrong.

However, Kent has brought up this very same subject a few times already, so you might get the most feedback by simply going back a couple weeks into this thread and see what people said.

I realize this is a massive thread that makes it difficult to find specific older posts, even when its just been a couple weeks... hopefully that might change if and when the "showing ONLY posts in a thread by a specific user" feature is added to GTP in the upcoming software update.

In the meantime, to make it easier on you here are some of the links to Kent's questions regarding what games people recommend and from there you can follow the discussion:
If you are curious, here are a couple of my responses to these questions about games:
In addition, you'll find a lot of answers to your questions about games in specific threads in the PS3 Board. Here are a couple threads you might want to check out:
I hope you find some of this helpful and it guides you in the right direction. 👍

Looking back I see ND4SPD actually initiated this same topic a week earlier, and some of the responses might help you in your decision making as well:
Here was my response in case your curious:
Also Kent posted a question about the games and other content available for download at the PS Stores in addition to his other questions about PS3 games, so this may also be of some use to you:
And again, here was my response to that inquiry as well:

Basically speaking, there is a great deal of useful info in this thread... it just might take a little (OK, maybe a lot of) digging through to find it all! :)

GT4 was initially non compatible, but this has been fixed in the downloads.

I'm downloading the update file to my memory stick as I type this (at my brother's house - then I'll go home and try it out), so I hope it'll solve the problem.
By frimware, you mean the regular update file, right?
Or is it something else? :dunce:

*snip*

Well, first of all, I just gave you +rep for that post. 👍
It was really helpful in every aspect, great work there.

On the compatibility issue, it starts to try to read the GT4 disc, and after about 5 secs it displays a message stating that this PS2 disc is not compatible with PS3 system and something else I can't recall but has something to do with checking on the website for info on those issues.

Anyway, thanks a lot for yout help, guys. Really appreciate it! :sly:👍

EDIT: I think I'm going to buy Resistance as my first PS3 game.

Wow, a third HD recorder for my HDTV set alone and fourth overall. Sweet. Glad I upgraded to 250GB HDD. 👍

There's probably a thread on this but do you need a certain hd? I'm all on board for getting a new 500gb hd since I was planning to use one externally anyway. :dopey:

Wow that's awesome. Aside from being a DVR could it also record videos of gameplay you think?
That would be nice, but extremely unlikely. I don't think there are many, if any DVRs that can record video from any source other than broadcast TV (OTA, Cable, Satellite, etc). However, even if it was like a regular digital recorder, it would still have to have an input. I suppose you could feed the PS3 it's own output cable to an input cable... but that then leads me to my next question and that is how can the PS3 get any broadcast signals to record as it has no video inputs that I am aware of???

However, if you want to record videos of gameplay and then share them or post them on the net, all you need is a video capture card for your PC, or you could use a DVD recorder and then transfer the file onto your PC.

I'm already down to my last 5GB on my 60GB PS3 HDD so I need to start getting serious about upgrading to a much larger HDD.

As for DVR capabilities, for us at least I don't think we would likely ever use it. Like you, we already have four SA Explorer 8300HD 160GB DVRs (theater, family room, master, & office) and each of those have dual tuners, so we already have the ability to record 8 shows at once... not that we would ever need to. Besides, despite the fact that each one can save 80 hours of SD or 20 hours of HD, I am always having to delete things off of the DVRs as we never have time to watch the vast majority of the programming we record.

Still, I can see this being a nice option to have for many PS3 owners, and glad to see they are working towards making that a possible future feature set... but I am still puzzled on how the PS3 is supposed to be fed any incoming broadcast signal?

I love the PS3 and they just keep on coming out with better and better news. To one of the poster above about Sony in the gaming industry, MS has not even come close to what Sony has achieved with the PS3, it is one of the most advanced machines out there.

Also, are there any really good games for PS3 already?

Resistance is a great title, along with Motorstorm and some others. Later this year and next year is when the really amazing games are going to be released.

edit: One thing I think Sony needs to make into an update is being able to play your own music while in game for ps3 games.

I was wondering the same thing. My Vaio PC already has a tuner card and Sony's Gigapocket Recorder is a great piece of software, although I haven't compared to anything else.

So, from my PC experience I know Sony is good at the tuner/DVR thing, but like you said, I don't know how to get the signal into my PS3. Could they sell a USB tuner for it perhaps?

As for hard drive space I would probably just copy any files out to my external hard drive over media sharing. That's where all my videos from my PC are stored and how I watch them on my TV through the PS3. I would most definitely make use of this feature as many times I find I am stuck choosing between recording ALMS, Champ Car, or IndyCar races that overlap their times. I even had one day where a Formula 1 race was on at the same time as a couple of others.

Of course, space would have to be determined by compression and whether you can choose to record HD or SD. I know the E3 press conference was an hour and a half and only took up a little over a gig, so if they use that kind of compression (my PC won't do that and keep the quality) it may not be an issue of hard drive space for a lot of people.

It would be great if the system had an option to use the internal drive as a temporary storage or buffer while recording to an external drive.

Another thought is that if you can use the tuner to watch live television then they will have nearly fully integrated the home entertainment and PC. Just give it a few office applications and email software and you are done (exaggerated I know).

Basically, I buy a console more often than I update my PC because I rarely do any gaming on my PC and if the PS3 can integrate everything I do on my PC then I would possibly abandon the PC altogether.

Imagine record stuff in HD, then pop the disc into the PS3....awesome!

Sorry for double posting, I thought I clicked the Edit button:ouch:

Anybody here download the I am Legend trailer off of the ps store and think the car will smith was driving was straight out of gran turismo 5?

That's how far video game graphics have come. PD has produced Hollywood quality graphics for the PS3. Watch the trailer and wait for the scene when the camera is behind the car. It looks Gran Turismo 5. If they put a Gran Turismo 5 Mustang in it's place you wouldn't see the difference.

I definitely noticed it was CGI. They messed up the car overlay on the abandoned city shot and so it kind of sticks out.

Just thought I'd let everyone know that there was an updated version of Blast Factor released. If you go into your download list, and redownload it, you'll notice it'll have a new XMB icon, new, updated sound and graphical effects, a new Practice mode, the motion sensitivity has been fixed, and other tweaks.

While trying to find info on the "updates" for both GripShift and Blast Factor, I came across a site called QJ.net that seems to report on a lot of news relating to PS3.

One of their reports is on the announcement from Sony that Ninja Theory's Heavenly Sword now has an official release date of September 12.

In another report, posted yesterday, they include four new video clips from Heavenly Sword, one cut scene, and three gameplay clips.

They all look like they are from Gametrailers.com, so HD versions might be available on that site.

The first clip I thought was pretty funny... and stunning graphics! Glad to see they have added some humor into the characters and story. :)

They also have another long clip of the lead character using that traditional "fire/rocket cannon"... still have not had a chance to look up the real name for that thing which I saw what looked like Chinese monks using it in an ancient ritual of strength, where they must each hold these large cannons made of bamboo that launch a series of massive fireworks from... like giant Roman candles.

The other big story they had covered was on the video interview with Phil Harrison on the latest development news on PS Home including new video clips of PS Home in action. I posted the link and a copy of that article in the PS Home thread.
