PS3 General Discussion

Might be an obvious answer... but is there a reason why Sony doesn't tell us all the updates they are doing to the firmware? There have been fairly significant ones we have discovered over the past few days that really should have been mentioned.
They like to jump out and yell, "Suplise!"

Going to the game store tomorrow.
I'm going to ask if they could put a starter pack aside untill Christmas.
I'm afraid i'll be playing on it to much if i buy it now.
We'll see if they agree.

I suspect it's one of those common classic right-hand not knowing everything the left-hand is up to moments. In this case, the right-hand being the marketing department and the left-hand being the software developers.

:D

I think it's cool they do so many good cool updates rather compared to the 360 just doing it to "shut us up".
This raises an interesting question, is the Wikipedia listing for the 360 System Updates accurate, and that there have only been six updates since the lauch nearly two years ago?

So, the marketers say, "This update has these five things."
And then we say, "Hey, I just found these ten other things."

And then the developers go:

Sorry, just driving the joke into the ground.

Seems the starter pack is sold out everywhere :(
I went to the toy store and they said they sold the last one on sunday.
Just called another game store and they were also sold out, and they had them in large supplies.

Seems i have to wait until sony starts producing them again, when they notice they get sold more now. I'm not interested in the 40GB model, and i can only hope the next one is going to have backwards compatibility again.

edit: just found a web site which says they can deliver immediately.
I'll have it tomorrow then if everything goes well.

Good luck:tup:

I have a question about the firmware. How does the firmware counting works? Like 1.93 to 2.00?

It usually goes up in 0.01 increments but to be honest its totally random, when you approach big numbers like 2.00 or 3.00 they tend to jump strait to them...

I really depends how major the update is and the amount of new features of fixes which are included...

Hope that helps,

Robin

To add to what Robin said:

When changing firmware by .1 or .01 they are making minor changes to the current layout and function of the firmware.

When we jumped to 2.0 I think it was a whole new layout and functionality, almost like an OS upgrade. The look and functionality was completely different, and as D-N pointed out: more free space became available so I think 2.0 was actually completely overwriting everything and the programming has gotten better so they are able to be more efficient.

Exactly. This is also how many software companies generally distinguish the difference between their programs and how they are priced.

For instance, here is a common version numbering system:
  • 0.0x = Patch = Bug Fixes (which are almost always free)
  • 0.x0 = Update = Added Minor Features (which are sometimes not free)
  • x.00 = "New" Version = Added Major Features (which are almost never free)

Sounds like DIVX support is on the way for the PS3. If I can find the link from the place I saw it I'll post it.

I read an article somewhere that said AVI / DVIX / XVID files are now recognised on the PS3 after the 2.00 update... you still cant play them but atleast they are recognised, could this mean a DVIX / AVI support rollout in future updates?.. maybe when home comes.

I though it would always recognize AVIs but only play them when they used the codecs supported by the video player.

I have always been able to download AVIs to the hard drive from the browser or my PC, but it was usually a crapshoot as to whether it would play it or tell me it was an unsupported format. Sometimes it would download it but then say unsupported format in the video menu, as opposed to WMVs which it won't even recognize on a memory card, USB drive, my PC, etc and won't even download on to the hard drive.

All good news.

On a related note, does anyone have any idea the likelihood Sony might add FLAC support for the PS3?

I ask because a poker pal of mine was really enjoying messing around with my PS3, but said the only thing holding him back was the lack of support for FLAC, as his entire music library, which is enormous, is apparently all in FLAC.

FLAC....... huh! ;).. gosh never heard of it!

I think Sony will start with the hugely popular ones first...

That ones probably down for the 4.00 update!

Robin

I am confused how FLAC can be so heavily compressed, yet lossless.

And technically, reading from the Wiki page, it still isn't lossless as it is 800-950 kb/s. Granted it is very, very close, but still not lossless.

To be completely honest people who get picky about FLAC are audiophiles to the extreme. I have trouble telling the difference once you get over 128kb/s.

D-N, tell your friend if he wants true lossless audio at its absolute best he will need a diamond tipped record player and a brand new, unstacked record. He only gets to listen once, but that is the highest quality you can ever achieve. I've only seen one setup like this, and that was on a college campus.

Enjoy!

Dunno if this has been posted but its now official DVIX is coming to the PS3!

Im just confirming what was already expected to be true as posted above in this thread.

http://uk.gamespot.com/news/6182834.html?tag=latestnews;title;1

DVIX has confirmed that the rumours are true and that the PS3 will have DVIX support.

The version 2.0 PS3 Software Dev Kits already support it and they were given out on the 2nd November.

Don't know when its going to come out for us though :indiff:

I'm not sure I understand what you mean?

The hardware is already built-in to the PS3 and the recent update apparently now let's PS3 users view DivX-encoded videos... although I have not tried this nor do I have any DivX videos to try out. If somone does, maybe they can give it a try, both on the PS3's HDD and from media sharing from your PC.

The article isn't very clear though as to the extent of DivX support currently available, and what is involved in making it available. I assume the developer Kit they mentioned is so that game developers can, if they chose, to use DivX-encoded video, but if the article is accurate, if you own a PS3 and are running the latest system software, then you already have some form of DivX support.

@Robin
It's divx, not dvix ;)
Adding to the confusion, it's important to write it as DivX so as not to confuse it DIVX, the infamously disastrous optical disc format that tried ten years ago, following the launch of DVD, to get consumers to buy into a PPV disc distribution model. Fortunately, most consumers saw through this, and voted with their wallets and chose DVD over DIVX.

Wow, I always thought it was the same thing.

Currently the system will not play (recognize yes but not play) any Divx video whether streaming it or not... It is only confirmed that the system will get support in the future.

I assume that they have made the files recognisable to prepare for the future, they might as well do it sooner than later, devs get the ue of it now because as you said they may want to use the compression technology.

So nothing as of now has changed...
