PS3 General Discussion

For the first time in a while, I finally bought myself another PS3 game. I was at a Wal-Mart and thought about getting a low-priced title I was probably going to like. I also needed just to get back in the PS3 loop. So the latest game I added to my PS3 collection was...

Midnight Club: Los Angeles (Complete Edition)

I gave up on the Midnight Club series since I've had a fair share of frustration in later levels. I NEVER made it to London in MC1, and I was mostly stuck in Paris in MC2. This is only the third Midnight Club game in my collection of games. I don't know my shortcuts, so I am taking it easy around Los Angeles in this game. Pretty cool game from what I've played so far. Since I wasn't sure what car would best suit me early on, I took the Nissan S14(?) Silvia as my first car. She can be a handful at speed. I almost wanted to trade my Silvia for the Datsun 240Z- which is one of my all-time favorite cars, but I feared the 240Z would be tougher to handle than the Silvia. I looked ahead to the other cars I have yet to unlock in the game, and I like the lineup of machines in this game ranging from cars to SUVs to motorcycles.

Adding "Midnight Club: LA" makes it 12 games in my collection. I was going to say that I added "Little Big Planet 2" was added to my collection, but I didn't have enough money. If I get a PSN Gift Card, I may consider getting some games for the PS3 and MAYBE some downloadable content as well.

It's going to get hard later on too. I never beat MC3 or 4 but I did beat MC2 and it was HARD...

Good game and it drives wonderful with a wheel.

You also missed a golden opportunity during black Friday. Little Big planet Karting was on sale for $25. Its better than Mod nation, made by the same developers.

MCLA wasn't really that hard....

I'm slowy working my way through MCLA, I would say its pretty hard because you have to grind tons and you can easily loose tournament races by hitting something on the last corner :ouch: They really made it frustrating but its a great game.

Yeah grinding was the worst part. The easiest way was the Red highway races. A modded car will wipe them and it's $10k every race.

Might try grinding some more of those races then 👍 The AI does tend to mess up more on the highway but what was Rockstar thinking when they put in insanely realistic levels of traffic in this game  you have to be superhuman at times!

Use the perk that lets you blast the traffic out of the way. Even if they get ahead, pulling it back and then some is rather easy.

I loved ModNation Racers except for the long load times. I saw IGN's review of LBPKarting on YouTube, and it was no wonder the video got 596 thumbs up and 689 thumbs down- mostly because of Greg Miller's review. Those who saw the Gamespot review of this game gave it 178 thumbs up and 17 thumbs down. I don't know. Based on what I've seen from these two reviews, I MIGHT pass on LBP Karting.

When I was looking at "Midnight Club: Los Angeles," I was actually torn between trying to get that game or "Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit." I also saw a few modern first-person shooters among the Greatest Hits collection like "Call of Duty: World at War." I was basically looking for some low-priced games.

One other story I forgot to share about Midnight Club 1 was the frustration I've had in trying to actually stop the final guy just to race that final event in New York City. You have to basically drive on the wrong side of the freeway and hit him head-on in hopes he doesn't leave you in a cloud of dust. But as I said, I NEVER made it to London in MC1.

For now, I'll stick to the low-difficulty racers in MCLA. My Silvia is doing just fine for now.

Hey peeps.

Can anyone cut and paste the first store update of the new year please?

I'm at work and the computers say no to almost everything. Except GTP though :sly:

I bought gift cards for the first time ever. I was looking for a $50 USD gift card for PSN, but I ended up buying two $20 gift cards. I'll be looking to see what I want to buy with my two cards. Downloadable content and PSN-exclusive titles may be part of my shopping list.

The first PSN-exclusive material I've ever gotten was The Simpsons Arcade Game. I am going to look around on PS Store for some more stuff.

If you are looking for PSN exclusive games, Uncharted should be quite cheap now and it's a good game that will have you playing it a few times through. Though it might not fit in with your collection which mostly seems to be orientated around driving.

Other than PSN-related stuff, I finally realized that you could switch the mode from Online to Offline to see your Trophies. It otherwise would take longer to see trophies. Having to wait around is a real fussbudget if you're just trying to keep up on certain goals as you progress through a game. Unless it is to update your Trophy information in real time online, it's better keeping your Trophies in Offline Mode rather than connect to some server.

I did look around on PSN to see so many different PS1 and PS2 games offered for download to the PS3- including "GTA: San Andreas." It would have been great if PS1 and PS2 games were reverse compatible even on newer PS3 models. That's why I keep my PS2 to play both PS1 and PS2 games even as my fancy newer (I bought mine in June 2011) PS3 is unable to play older games from previous PlayStation models. Some of the different games for download on the PS3 I already have for the PS1 or the PS2. It just means I get to play those older games in a higher resolution or optimized for today's current TVs. To me- big woop.

Online mode for Trophies just doesn't work for me at all any more. Permenantly on Offline. I just sync them the regular way before the last update.

PSone games are compatible with all PS3 versions.

Really? I'll have to test out my PS1 collection to see if I could actually play those titles on my PS3. I know I've used PS2 discs and failed to read them. I'll be sure to give thanks if I can play PS1 games on my PS3. Remember- I'm still somewhat inexperienced to this current generation of game systems. So I am still learning as I go.

Not visited the PSN store around a year or more until recently. The new one runs terrible. I read some posts around the net about the problems a while back but expected it to be fixed or something. I can't really believe it's not been pulled or that they even thought it was good enough to release, six years after launch of the PS3 too.

Sorry to moan, but I can't think I've experienced such a mess and completely amazed about its existence. At least put the old store until they sort something to a reasonable standard or is it just me?

I used to visit the PSN each week to check for new stuff, but since they changed it to its current mess, I don't bother with it at all.

Way to go Sony. Making things people want to buy harder to find is a really good idea. :dunce:

The newer PlayStation Store seems more like an app than a certain feature. It takes longer to load everything, and I wish it could be more efficient and more fluid when looking for material on PS Store. I even feel like some material may be MISSING from the PS Store. Like this past weekend, I was wondering if tracks like Kart Space and Spa-Francorchamps came up missing from the PS Store because I couldn't find a track pack or anything featuring those courses. I don't know.

Just because the new PlayStation Store is stylish looking doesn't mean it has to lack functionality or be inefficient. I hope it's something Sony can fix or remedy.

The old store was incredibly more efficient. The new store has flash but absolutely no function. They leave games up there and sometimes when you select them its a bad link.

Agreed, I've noticed this also. Some of the button links don't work. It's a little frustrating. As well as it being harder to find things, it's not very well organised at all.

If it's not broken, don't fix it hey?

I completed 100% of a game's Trophies just now! A Platinum isn't offered, but I cleared all of the Trophy objectives for "Daytona USA" to 100% completion. The number of Platinums for me remains zero. I doubt I'm even in double digits for Gold Trophies.

As for my PlayStation Store discussion, I almost swear Sony was planning on playing that "Too Close to Love You" song from Alex Clare from the Internet Explorer commercials just to market the newer PS Store. The new PS Store looks lovely, but it is more or less more eye candy than efficient.

Sony's rule is if its not broken, break it.

Congrats on your first 100%. Have you tried Sly Cooper?

No. Never really got into the Sly Cooper series. Most of what I usually play are racing games, fighting games, and sometimes classic game collections. I do enjoy action stuff like the Saints Row series and stuff, though. I still sometimes wonder what to buy as far as first-person shooters are concerned. Most of my first-person shooter experience is mostly with classic PC titles like Duke Nukem 3D and Doom and stuff. But sometimes, I want to show I'm modern. Only first-person shooter I have for the PS3 is the demo to "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2." I still have never gotten past trying to climb the mountain successfully after that one brief cutscene. Goes to show either how old or inexperienced I am as a modern first-person shooter gamer.

I don't play point and click FPS's that much either. I have a few and enjoy them, but I never get online. I prefer a story and character development, which leaves me out on most of the "ZOMG, teh multiplayer is awesome though" games, and I find the majority of first person shooters are that way. There are good ones, for me, out there, but they are hard to find before you actually play the game.

ok, new to this forum, hi all, not sure if this is the place but i heard that fanaleds can operate on ps3, anybody know any more details on this one and if not can you direct me where to find any info, thanks

I might get either another game or do some more PlayStation Store shopping. I saw the trailer and a review to "Journey." It seems to be a very beautiful game. When you have a game that has Grammy nominations for its music, you know the music has to be stunning. So the appeal and charm are there for this game- beautiful graphics, perhaps a great soundtrack (I've never heard it as of this post). One of the more interesting things I heard in a game review of "Journey" is that you may tag along with someone anonymously to go along with you as you try to reach that mountain. There was even a note that this game is only about three hours long. The last sort of artistic game I've ever played was Okami.

On YouTube, some of the comments I've read mostly say that a lot of people can't appreciate this game because it is more artistic rather than your average hyperfest. Here's the exact quote:

"the game industry would do well with more games like this. short, beautiful works of art that are more story and exploration then they are action and typical $60 block buster hypefests. most people don't have the money to invest in this kind of thing anymore, but these smaller, cheaper, and arguably more beautiful artistic games are what I love. they prove that video games don't have to be just mindless distractions for children and imature adults.

they can be works of art."

A troll even said that a Call of Duty game looks better than Journey. Got to love trolls...

I probably may not get Journey, but I am very much impressed by it. How can one not even be impressed by something like this? I probably knew what to expect with this title considering it was made by the same company that did "Flow" and "Flower" (Santa Monica Studio).

I tested it, and you were right- you CAN play PS1 games on a PS3! I know already I can't play PS2 games on this newer PS3. That is, unless the PS2 game could be installed onto a drive. I think I have maybe one or two PS2 games that could be installed on a drive. Then again, I think I have to install something on my PS3 to allow me to install installable PS2 games. It's all so confusing, but yeah.

Why not try the demo for journey then let us know what you think of it. I have not tried it but all the professional reviews are positive.
