PS3 PSN login error

I take it everyone is getting the same error messages when the try to start games? One of my flat mates started the original 60Gig ps3 today I have and he seen the message, just a few minutes before I text them warning them not to start it. :(
Is there going to be any long term problems with PS3s like mine which have been started and experienced the problem?

Nope you should be good to go when the fix comes out (which is within 24 hours says Sony).

@ Oldnail: thanks for the confidence, my GT5P works too!

@ EVERYBODY:

I bit the bullet, disabled my router, started up ps3, network settings > disable internet connection, put in GT5P disc, started game, and I'm good to go.

So double plus confirmation that at the very least we can all play Gran Turismo 5 Prologue with no trouble at all right this moment.

@ GT4 Genius : No, once it is fixed it shall be fixed for good.

I think the main problem at the moment is that a lot of people don't have all the information. Hundreds of game sites are reporting it as a PSN error still even though they mention in the article it's only effecting Fat consoles.

You can play games offline that do not have trophies, such as GT5P or COD4. You do NOT have to disable anything to do with your internet for this. This bug has nothing to do with internet connectivity. It's a hardware error! You will get it if you switch on.

Just for the record i have disconnected mine from being online and have set the clock manualy without any issue yet. I dont know if people want to try this as i havent had any problems.

I got no error on system start up. I would add that you can play offline games that do not use trophies AND do not rely on DLC (important addition!).

Everything else sweetshopunion (and I didn't grasp the genius of your username 'til typing it just then) says is truth. I'm watching a GT5P replay while I type in fact :P!

Thanks for the reply guys. Perhaps a mod should take control of this thread, change the name and post all accurate information about the issue in the first post.

That is a most excellent idea. I saw it got moved from the GT5 forum but honestly I checked there first when I heard about this issue :embarrassed:.

Bethesda. :censored:s.

But, similarly, I have four PS2s - not because they broke, but because I keep accidentally collecting them for LANs. Not had a problem with any of them. Now, that's not to say that they don't break, or people didn't get DREs but, since 1997, I've not had a day of downtime with them.

PSN is a little different - I have no control over that, and that's a natural extension of network gaming. Currently my PS3 won't connect to PSN through no fault of my own - but the company responsible had no idea it would happen and are working like crazy to generate a solution. That's pretty much the definition of a good service - my console's nowhere near being in warranty, but still they're fixing it for me. A day of downtime in a thousand which causes no permanent issues? I'll take it - that's a 99.9% reliable service. I wonder what else can match that?

I guess for Joey D in particular, the PSN problem is yet another in a succession of problems. PSN is a Sony service/product offered by Sony, as are there consoles or any other hardware that they produce/sell. PSN may be 99.9% reliable but factor in this particular PSN failure, and an individual that has had multiple issues with other Sony products; then I guess at least if you are Joey D then yet another issue is more than likely to upset - and possibly to a greater extent than a Sony customer that has a had a trouble free life. Of course, not everybody is Joey but I know others that have had issues. My flat mate has had 2 PS3's die in as many years and has a PS1/PS2 that 50% of the time will not play games/music/movies due to DRE.

I think now that we are all connected, and allot of our hardware/software is fixable with a firmware/software update. Manufactures of hardware and software tend to take on the attitude of ‘‘its ok we'll fix it later if it breaks'', In the rush to release products so that they can cash in, and the same time and effort is no longer in place to carry out intense testing for reliability/functionality of there products before they go to market. In the good old days ( a few years ago lol) when we did not have the same connectivity like we have now to fix things, they worked straight out of the box... In many ways this is a blessing but used the wrong way can be costly. ( I would not say this is the case with PSN, but perhaps with the PS3 with regards to the PSN issue)

Just as an example for me personally with Sony and other game developers that rely on quick fixes.

Borderlands, a game I have with tons of bugs/crashes/inconsistent frame rates/game freezes. This game has had patches but still has problems. I do not have many games so can not comment but every game I have has had to have fimrware updates.

GT5P. I have not been able to play online now since September 2009. I keep getting the usual error of failed to connect to host.

My own PS3 which is an 80GB model and gets little use but if used for the whole day will freeze at least once/twice and needs a reset. Always has Network problems when using Media Servers. (Of course this could be 3rd party software) If I am online all day on my PS3 I will be logged out of PSN at least 5 times a day. The internet browser is still rubbish and freezes and just does not work properly.

For me the above (other than GT5P) is not such an issue, and I am still very happy with my Next Gen experience but manufactures and developers do need to take more time and care when releasing new products. This current PSN problem is simply a school boy error and could have been avoided from what I have read.

I have never really had problems with hardware up uptil recently - as products become connectable with other devices.

Going a little off topic...

My TV, a Phillips 42 PFL7603D is a lovely TV but has had its problems. For a TV that had an RRP of £1000 it had a remote control that almost did not work. It would take at times almost 1-3 minuets to turn on and make funny clicking noises. When switching from different sources sometimes it would not work and to resolve the TV would have to be turned on an off. There are loads of other niggling issues that are all amount to not being acceptable at all. The TV has had countless firmware releases one of which broke my TV over Christmas 2008 which left me without a TV for 2 weeks. Thankfully it was in warranty and was fixed. My TV still has issues which Phillips advise are fixable with a firmware update but to be honest I am afraid it will break again as I am out of warranty. This TV has broke for many, not just an isolated problem.

My Sony Erikson C902 is crap, buttons often choose to not work, and wireless keeps turning itself on without me asking it to do so. Ear peace plays up so I can't hear callers on occasion etc. Again not an isolated problem. Will take it back under warranty.

The Dell Laptop I bought for my GF broke due to the poorly designed cooling as well as a faulty Nvidia card. This affected every Laptop that had the Nvidia 8400GS cards. Yet again not an isolated problem.

I am just waiting for YLOD and for my Onkyo amp to break.

Electronics seem to have simply become much more unreliable recently than from as far back as I can remember.

👍

Pretty much spot on there.

Am reading on several playstation forums, that Sony are advising everybody with other ps3 models than the slim to NOT turn on their consoles untill a solution has been found...they expect this within 24 hours(lol...)...

So they are working hard on it for sure...

There must be a major panic going on in the whole world, and i am sure there is a major panic going on in Sony headquarters aswell...Sony whas allready not having a good year,so this is more bad news if they don't release gt5 now!!...uuuuuueeehhhh,i mean fix the ps3 problem ofcourse....lol.

spy.

The problem has everything to do with time and date, I did the battery trick and now I'm back up and running 👍

I suggested doing this long before then. :sly: However you should only do this if you know what you are doing, or are happy to risk the chance of ruining your PS3 forever. Also doing this will void your warrenty and while that has probably expired, should any futher problems arise with your machine, Sony will be within their rights to refuse you help. This is only a temp fix too as the same will happen again next year unless Sony fixes it with a firmware upgrade, so you are probably better off waiting until then.

I know that, I just linked a post that had an instruction. When I first read your replies I figured it made the most sense, so I just jumped in and did it on my own to see. At least it's confirmed for you now :)

I understand, infact to be honest I would have linked to that post too. I wasn't sure by any means, just throwing out my opinion as I had nothing better to do. Lets hope a full fix from Sony is around the corner.

I take it this is effecting everyone in europe who hasn't got the slim? Add me to the long list of error coders LOL Good to see lots of info and constant updates from the team on the PS3 blog........No mag for me tonight then LOL

Just to point out - I doubt it will happen next year - as it didn't happen in 2009 (Non leapyear) or 2008 (actual leap year)...

I would suspect that the next possible time it might happen is 2014.

Äh,
only way to fix this (exept loosing warrenty) is an onlineupdate right? But we can not log in to the Psn... Could be a very huge problem.

Btw I dont believe in the date thing. My Ps3 had a random date because of the Fanatec bug

Try everyone in the world who hasn't got the slim or one of a couple of batches of fats that are unaffected too.

yeti, you could be correct, but it would depend on whether this bug has been there all the time ( next time it will strike would then be 2014 ) or if it was somehow introduced in a firmware update after this time last year, then it could stike next year. As I am not Sony or someone who really understands these things, I don't really know anything for sure, it's all just opinion based of a little common sense.

Funny, gotta admit.

Also the "blogosphere" has apparently tabbed this mishap as the ApocalyPS3.

I tried playing DiRT 2 and it wouldn't let me start. I find that my DiRT 2 Trophy list is gone! I hope Sony fixes this, and makes sure it doesn't happen again. Our internet sucks, so no log in to PSN was nothing new.

It is a date thing. In fact, the same thing has happened with Blackberry phones as they use the same/a similar chipset.

Heard about this problem last night, looks like its much bigger and its a world wide issue.

Someone had to (-:

I think WWII just ended prematurely

This can be fixed! But requires opening up your PS3 :(

Meh, no thanks. I'm not bad with handy work, but I'm abit sketchy on DIY projects that involve expensive electronic products. Maybe its because I still haven't gotten overthe exploding microwave...:scared:

Just turned my PS3 on...

Holy hell, this isn't a error folks: we are in the midst of having our own portable time machines!!!

Famine, care to come back ten years and join the party? :)

10 Things to Do While Your PlayStation 3 Is Broken

Relax. Take a deep breath.

Your PlayStation 3 is broken thanks to a glitchy internal clock, and it’s not going to right itself for a while. What will you do to fill the hours and pretend that your game console still works? Game|Life writers John Mix Meyer, Chris Baker, Gus Mastrapa and I have some suggestions.

10. Pretend you’re in PlayStation Home: Invite a bunch of weird-looking dudes over to your house and do the Cabbage Patch in your living room.

9. Pull out your PlayStation 2. Reminisce about the good old days when game consoles were free-standing appliances that didn’t need to ping a central server before they allowed you to play.

8. Make a game out of your household chores: “Hooray! I just unlocked the Elbow Grease Trophy in PixelJunk Fridge-Cleaner!”

7. Play real-life Gran Turismo: Take your used Toyota hatchback out on the freeway and rev it up to 55. Ah, this is the life. Who needs racing games? Hey, Click and Clack are on NPR.

6. Stand outside by your mailbox, waiting for friend requests.

5. Play the Xbox 360, which has an internal clock that does not have a horrible kill-switch built into it AARGH.

4. Break out the Pledge and clean the dust off your Wii. Bonus: Clean off all your unused peripherals, too — by the time you’re wiping the last of the grime off the Wii Wheel, the bug will be fixed.

3. Read our recaps of The Tester instead of watching the actual show. (Note: This tip still applies even after your PlayStation 3 starts working again.)

2. Make a list of 10 things to do while your PlayStation 3 is broken.

1. Get your old box of Little League baseball trophies out of the basement, and award them to yourself. Take them to bed with you, comforted in the knowledge that Sony cannot take these away from you (until at least the PlayStation 5).
