PSVR2 and Motion Simulators: Seeking Advice

Hi GTPlanet crew! šŸ‘‹

Iā€™ve been diving headfirst into GT7 with the PSVR2, and I have to say, the level of immersion is mind-blowing! But, as many of you VR racers might know, staying ā€œinside the play areaā€ can be a challenge, especially when you get into the heat of a race. The game pauses if you move too much, which is less than ideal when youā€™re trying to shave seconds off your lap time! šŸ˜…

Now, Iā€™m ready to take things up a notch and build my own motion simulator. Iā€™ve been researching setups like the SFX 100 and SFX 150. My initial plan is to start simple with a 4-actuator platform and then add features like surge and traction loss later on. But hereā€™s where I could really use some help from this amazing community.

Has anyone here tried combining PSVR2 with a motion rig? How well does the headset tracking hold up with all the movement?

I know GTPlanet is full of experienced racers and DIY enthusiasts, so any advice, tips, or personal experiences would be massively appreciated! Once I get everything set up, Iā€™ll be happy to share my progress and results with the community.

Thanks in advance for your help, and Iā€™ll see you on the trackā€”virtually, of course! šŸŽļøšŸ’Ø

Hi,
I am using the motion rig SR1 of simrig.se a Swedish company which does produce very good quality for decent price (starting from 3.5kā‚¬, still lots of money but much cheaper than many competitors).
Combination of PSVR2 and motion is absolutely brilliant!! I It works very well, some cars have limited interior space and if you set the motion too high (just a few days ago I started to increase it) you might see the green cage since you are ā€žoutsideā€œ the car, but this is rather the exception. I can adjust and save settings for each car, so for the few cars where this could be a bit annoying, I just lower the settings a bit.
I compete online as well and never had any issues.

DIY is way too technical for me, if you manage it, you will love it! Can highly recommend it

I've got the DOF Reality P3 (an H3 would do fine I'm sure as its their 'consumer' and cheaper model). I love my setup. I have just one suggestion if you end up selecting a DOF Reality rig, find a local welder to weld the vertical nut onto the crossbar below. The Yaw/Traction Loss puts a ton of torque on that piece and gets loose after a couple months even with Loctite.

Other than that, this setup is perfect when coupled with Sim Race Studio 2.x. I did buy a separate seat/chair and simple harness (safety first and all that) from Amazon. You don't really need it if unless you have the rig hella aggressive in every aspect.

The only other caveat when motion-sim-racing in GT7 is prepare for black screen with green bar flickering. This is something that isn't avoidable unfortunately. Anytime the game thinks your in-game head is leaving the cockpit (think, putting your head out the window), the screen will go black with green bars as you are outside the cockpit. It's not super common by and large, but if you are in the MP4/4 at the High Speed Ring or Daytona Oval you'll encounter it. What I had to do as a compromise is lessen the Sway maximum so that it doesn't tilt as much left/right to prevent it like 99.5% of the time. Some combos you just can't avoid it without having to lean inward. I wish PD would just let us extend outside this boundary, but I'm sure they will never fix this unfortunately.

These are two minor things imo, the first being an easy fix for a couple hundred bucks to never have to worry about it again (and it won't affect taking the rig apart either). The second one being a letdown, but only initially and now for me a very rare occurrence, but I also don't feel much Sway; some but not enough and this would happen no matter which rig you choose.

Again, don't let these two things stop you or make you second guess things, the pros VASTLY outweigh the cons. I just wanted to let you know ahead of time so you aren't as crushed/frustrated as I was when I found out. HTH!

Thanks for the reply, itā€™s super helpful! Iā€™m curiousā€”why did you choose SimRig over other options? Also, what software do you use to connect GT7 with your motion system?

Lastly, how do you save the settings for each car? That feature sounds really convenient!

Appreciate the insight, and thanks again for sharing your experience!

Hi Jerome! šŸ‘‹

Thanks for sharing your experienceā€”this is super valuable information! The tip about welding the vertical nut is brilliant, and Iā€™ll definitely keep it in mind if I go for a DOF Reality rig.

Iā€™m curious, how do you find Sim Racing Studio 2.x for tuning and managing the settings? Also, with the flickering issue in GT7, do you think itā€™s more common with certain cars or tracks, or is it mainly about the Sway settings?

One more question: knowing what you know now, would you still choose a DOF Reality system, or would you recommend something like an SFX 100 or similar?

Appreciate your honesty and advice, and I totally agreeā€”the pros definitely seem worth it! Thanks again for the tips! šŸŽļøšŸ’Ø

I did some research and wrote some guys I found on youtube who use SimRig Motion about their experience. Everyone confirmed that GT7 and motion goes very well together. There is also this Austrian youtuber Ron who does good sim racing content without affiliate links. SimRig is his favorite motion system.

Another reason why I chose it is that it is almost plug and play. You just have to connect the USB cable of the motion system to your laptop and install their software. Canā€™t give insights how its programmed, no idea, but it works perfectly. Each car shows up individually in the software, means for racing cars for example I can make the settings more rough than for road cars. It is fantastic.

I would still pick the same rig today because it's price point is still great, providing an excellent value. I'll see if I can put together a tour of my rig today to see if it'd help clarify what DOF Reality brings to the table. I think SRS 2.x is good, no real complaints per se, but it'd be nice to be able to easily flip between saved profiles as I could increase the sway for most car and track combos. The FT1500-A is one of the worst cars for VR as the cockpit is hella small. The old Fiat can cause the black cage to appear too, but it's slow enough its not too bad unless you are on a super high camber turn.
