quattro! - SFGTP4: Results, Photos & general discussion thread.

Give DaveS1138 a prize then for being the SFGTP participant willing to travel the furtherest to take part then. ;)

Also, congrats to EDK and Kylehnatfor their win in the Clio Edurance from one half of the previous race winners. :D:tup:

I don't know of GT5:Prologue will be used for any of the events in SFGTP5, but I was thinking of suggesting having the Clio Endurance on the Daytona Road Course. But I imagine it would probably be turned down for it's lap length. :embarrassed:

Its nice of you to say that but all I did was sit on a plane for 5 hours and catch a taxi. Kylehnat drove 750 miles to sit in a garage and drive for 2 days before driving 750 miles home. If anybody deserves anything its him :)

Thanks for the feedback David! 👍

For those of you that hadn't heard, ceiling_fan's Grandfather passed away a few days ago, he's flown to NY for the funeral, but I'm sure he'd appreciate a PM or visitor message from you all to give him something to smile about at this sad time. :(

Onto something SFGTP related, there's a list of quotes on the quotes board (what better place for them?!!!) but since I was racing when some of the quips were made, I'm not entirely sure of the context of everything.
What I'm going to do is list everything here, and those involved can play a game of match the quote to the race/event/person! 💡

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
"RSC = Really Sucky Car!" - Kylehnat

"He's off limits!" - alrivers w.r.t. Smallhorses (apparently, although I'm not sure what lead up to that? :boggled:)

"I totally forgot we had a quotes board!" - alrivers

"I'm in Baghdad!" - ceiling_fan

"I don't dig that bridge much!" - juana b.

"He said it was 200,000 pounds... that's like Rosie O'Donnell... Oh, wait!" - ceiling_fan

"That's what I get for following you!" - DaveS1138

"I suck. I organise these things, and I suck!" - Smallhorses (already quoted in the photo captions, and said in response to itgirlxx's question regarding my ability to actually win an SFGTP event! :guilty:)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

There you go. Let me know where they belong?

...but I had six hours of sleep beforehand ;).

Next time I come down, I'm going to make more of a vacation out of it. I've been down to the Bay Area three times, and still have not actually been to San Francisco. I also hear that the drive along the coast is pretty good.

Thanks Nick, I'm in NY at the moment.

"I'm in Baghdad!" - ceiling_fan

This was said a few times during the racing, but the first was at Le Sarthe, in the GT40 racecar with RH tires, after going into the sand on the turn after the second straight (Porsche curves?, I don't know all the fancy turn names :dopey:)

Some race reports:

Race 11: New York (3)

3rd ceiling_fan Toyota RSC '01
4th raz_10 Land Rover Range Stormer '04

I dread this track at the LAN's because ye olde P-S2's degrade the quality across the network which makes the turns and braking points all but clear. I had a close race with Dave the whole way and on the last lap (he was in second, myself third) he hit the wall on one of the 90 degree turns before Columbus Circle, but instead of using this opportunity to take second... I followed him right into it :ouch:

5th raz_10 Land Rover Range Stormer '04

I had about a 5 second lead at the beginning of the 3rd lap (being in a faster car helps) when I managed to spin inside the tunnel :banghead: I recovered pretty quickly but the damage was done. :grumpy: :P

More to come!

Thanks for the feedback guys!

I'm slowly editing the results with your comments and some of my own too.
Keep checking back for new stuff, and throwing out your own recollections as well. 👍

I showed my 14 year old daughter the pictures from the first two days, and her verdict was, rainy day or no, hanging out in a garage LAN party is a very dorky activity! :dopey:

Even so, I had a great time meeting you all and doing my best to keep pace. I'm definitely in for the next one! 👍

For the specific events...

"FF Coupe Pick'n'Mix"
For these events, I was mostly getting attuned to the GT4 physics again.

"Supercar Pick'n'Mix"
These cars were a handful, especially off the line. Unfortunately, one of the tricks from GT5p was to upshift once you got wheelspin, but that didn't work so well with these cars. Off the line in first, shift almost immediately to 2nd, watch the RPMs drop to about 2k, and wave goodbye to the field. :ouch:

Race 1: Sarthe I (3)
Vaxen/Ford GT '05 5th
I love the long straights, and it's custom made for supercars. I was actually in the mix for 3rd until I missed a braking zone on lap 2 and went deep into the sand (the 4th long straight, with a slight curve... not sure the name). After that, it was hang on for 5th.

Race 4: Twin Ring Motegi East (5)
alrivers/Pagani Zonda C12S 7.3 '02 2nd
Vaxen/Audi Le Mans quattro '03 3rd
This was probably my best performance of the day. One of my two 3rd places, but alrivers and I were in a close duel for 2nd. He got me on the last hairpin when I was too conservative with the brakes. I got the feeling that this was the one track where everyone was a bit uncomfortable and conservative, which put me on a bit more of a level playing field.

90s 4WD Rally Car Pick'n'Mix"
4WD rally was probably the most fun overall. The cars were quite a bit easier to control, which meant that boneheaded moves by me were fewer and farther between.

Race 3: Midfield (5)
Vaxen/Peugeot 206 Rally Car '99 6th
Did I just say easier to control? This race I disproved all of that, as I was all over the place. Off track and going backwards about as much as forwards (or so it seemed). :dunce:

Race 4: El Capitan Reverse (4)
Vaxen/Lancia Delta HF Integrale Rally Car '92 4th
DaveS1138/Lancia Delta HF Integrale Rally Car '92 5th
Dave commented on this race already. I was running 5th for most of the race, but caught Dave at the last possible moment. It was so close that I wasn't sure at the end which of us had gotten over the line first!

Race 10: Clubman Stage 5 Reverse (5)
Vaxen/Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV Rally Car '97 3rd
My other 3rd place, but I don't remember much about it, other than that I was "saving" the evo until we got to a more familiar track. Silly me, I don't know any of the GT4 tracks any more! Chalk this one up to the car rather than the driver then, as most were on the least favorite cars by the last race.

They do, but the best remedy is to go shopping.

Isn't GT Planet THE place to go for advice and information? Where else can a man learn so much about the ying and the yang; cars and women?

Thanks for the huge amount of comments Dan! 👍
Maybe your daughter is right, but hey, it's great fun and a helluva lot cheaper & safer that real-life racing!
Glad you enjoyed yourself and want to come back for more!

OK - I've been promising to do this, and I figured I'd better get to it before I killed the brain cells that remember 3 weeks back. :dopey:

First, let me say again, thanks to Nick and Rachel for begin fantastic hosts and putting up with us crazies for a couple of days. Now, on to my recollections of the weekend's activities. :D

I started the race in 4th place. I was chuckling at everyone on lap 1, when they all ended up out in the grass on the right hand side during the first uphill left hander. Then I did the same thing on lap 2, when it mattered a lot more. :ouch: I was lucky just to hang on for the 3rd place finish.

Race 3: Hong Kong (5)

This was a funny race in a kind of Schadenfreude sort of way. Somehow the green component part of the video signal lead on Kevin's racing station had worked loose. This meant driving around what should've been a dark Hong Kong track which was now illuminated in a sort of eerie yellow glow, and worse still, as he realised after a couple of accidents, couldn't actually see anyone else's brake lights coming on clearly! Being the good natured soul that he is (it's worth noting he'd got a beer on the go by this point, and that's always a guarantee of a happy Kevin!) he chalked it up to "experience" and calmly refitted the green colour lead ready for the next race. A somewhat unusual extra handicap!

I was thinking at first that there might be something wrong with my TV. :scared: It was a little weird at first, and got worse as the race wore on. It was impossible to pass these beasts on Hong Kong anyhow, so if I was going to pick a race for it to happen, this was the one. And yes, I won the second consecutive "Second Racer to Grab a Beer" award. :D

"The Renault Clio Cup Car Endurance" sees us randomly select a couple of qualifying combos from those provided by the guests.
Cumulative times from the 2 qualifying time trials are ranked 1 - 10 and then the drivers are paired off. 1 with 10, 2 with 9, 3 with 8 and so on until we have 5 endurance teams. Drivers take turns to drive race legs, swapping positions at the helm at each pitstop.

My qualifying time in the BMW at Montegi was certainly not representative of my best performance. It took too long to get used to driving a car with brakes and grip, after driving the SUV's all morning. As a result, I was paired up with Kyle, in a combo that suited me very well.

I ran the first session and pitted after 8 laps. I believe I was in 2nd or 3rd going into the pits. The racing was actually very tight during that first session. I was in a pack of 4 cars for most of the run. Passing opportunities were really tough to come by here.

Kyle managed to eat up the tires after another 7 laps.

I ran for 9 laps in my second session. Both Kyle and I were able to consistently hit in the low 1:25 range on laps, with occasional high 1:24's.

Kyle ran for another 7 laps in his 2nd session.

I ran for 10 laps in my 3rd session. I think the controller drivers had a disadvantage in this combo. Nick and I were both able to squeeze a little more out of the tires than the other racers.

Kyle finished it out with 8 laps in his last session. We had a great run, and after the second pit stop, all we had to do was avoid a bad mistake. I had a great time running this, and Kyle was a great partner to race with. 👍

With the shorter handicap series, the day looked to be finishing earlier, and thus it was decided to run some random spot races, using cars from the unselected list of endurance qualifiers, with the continuing track selection from the RTG.
With the network set with 5 stations still, this conveniently meant 2 races of 5 racers each, for each combo. Nothing is at stake, no prizes, points or penalties, just the sheer unadulterated joy of LAN racing with 4 other people that drive a little less predictably than the AI! :D

One of my favourite races of the weekend, I fought up through the field to spend most of the 4 laps sat directly behind Kevin, shadowing his every move and trying to find a good spot to pass, which is extremely tricky on the Monaco streets. Eventually able to just about squeeze alongside and outbrake him into the bus-stop chicane on the final lap, and ever-the-gentleman Kevin doesn't try to shut the door on me.

I enjoyed this race as well. The Toyota did not have the straight line speed of the Fiat. But I was able to drift through several corners and take up a lot of track while maintaining cornering speed, which seemed to help. I had already boxed you out in the chicane unintentionally one time. So I was sure to give you some room the second time. I think you won the race by something like 2 seconds, so the race would not have been nearly so close if not for my making the Toyota as wide as possible. :sly:

The GT was a better match for Hong Kong than you would think. It took me 2 laps to remember that I needed to brake early and be back on the gas entering the turns. You can induce oversteer which helps get you around the tight track. I had a tight race with raz_10 for a few laps until he finally crashed in the tight hairpin.

I actually had a fun battle for 4th/5th with ceiling_fan. We were trading positions and paint for most of the race. :dopey:

I was ranting pretty much the entire race. Several times, we entered turns 3 wide and I came out on the short end of the stick. But these cars are pretty much impossible to control in tight space. So I'll just apologize for my rant and move on. :guilty:

raz_10 got tail happy in front of me coming out of the tunnel on lap 1. I tried to go around him on the left, then the right, then back on the left, and ended up whacking into him a little on the way by.

But I actually really enjoyed driving the Saleen on this track. Probably did not hurt that Jake's truck race in the Ford F-150 lightning was here, and it understeers quite a bit more than the Saleen, if that's possible.

I managed to hold off jmgyro until lap 4, if I'm not mistaken. I actually had a few opportunities to pass alrivers, but just could not capitalize. I'm not a fan of the track, so I was pleased to finish where I did. :D

I was in second place for most of the race, and had a pretty big lead entering the last lap. But I had forgotten how badly the Suby understeers and therefore chews up front tires. I think I lost about 5 seconds on lap 4. :ouch:

This was one of my favorite races of the day. Lots of side by side action in the switchback corners. The Lancia has some great brakes. I tried to test them to the max in the Time Square turn on the last lap, and went for the glory of first place. But I managed to clip the wall on the back end of the turn and was lucky to hang on for second. Great racing with everyone in this one, though.

I managed to spin my Escort completely around backwards while it was still on blue tires during lap 1. :dopey: Still, I had a great time with that car on this track. It drifts really nicely and was a pleasure to run up over the hill going into the tunnel.

Officially the race I was most glad to not be involved in. I watched intently, as there was 3 wide and 4 wide action for almost the entire race. All of the finishers were very close and anyone could have won the race. I think I remember rooting for it to go on for 50 laps. :P

I remember Alex braking way early for the last hairpin going onto the main straight. I had to dive for the grass on the left and somehow managed to keep the car from spinning out of control. He explained after that he did not know the track in this direction and only realized his mistake after he had to get back on the gas going into the turn and saw me out to his right in the grass. :dopey:

(Kevin stopped after 4 laps!!!)

A shame that this was the last race of the day for me. I didn't really stop after 4 laps. I actually thought the race was over and gave Vaxen a big whack in the left side going into turn 1. Once I realized my mistake as everyone managed to yell above my headphone volume, I pulled to the side and did not resume.

Anyhow, some memorable races overall. Seemed I was best matched with raz_10, which was no surprise, considering our history in WRS. I really enjoyed racing with everyone, getting to know some new folks, and getting to share some great beers with some of you.

I'm sure I would not be competitive now that I'm only running prologue, but if and when there's and SFGTP5, be sure and count me in. 👍

Kevin

I remembered this the other day and had been meaning to discuss it. A few times while watching Kevin he would keep looking over his shoulder to see who it was that he was following. It was hilarious that right as Kevin looked over his shoulder Alex hit the brakes 4 seconds to soon and Kevin had to swerve into the grass.

Another favourite race for me, I was able to keep Jack's Lancia firmly in my sights after he'd passed me, and retook the lead on a couple of occasions. Our battling allowed Kyle to catch up in his Escort and he squeezed by me for 2nd place on the penultimate lap which allowed Jack to pull away a little until he slowed too much for turn 10 on the last lap allowing Kyle and I to close right up on him for the final hairpin!
I was just able to nip inside Kyle at the exit of the turn after he'd gone in too deep, but couldn't edge alongside Jack who hung on for the win!

I had initially thought I had lost since I broke down 20mph lower than I usually do on that 2nd to last turn, but I saw that I could hold on if I kept the inside even though I knew Kyle wanted to just charge in there. When Kyle then dropped to third after that turn I figured he was ticked off since I had been crashing into him each time we were near each other on every other track.

It took me a day to realize that I shouldn't be sitting where my setup is (6th position) most of the time as it's hard enough trying to pass in Sports tires with an overweight car. If I can go to the next SFGTP I definitely need my setup in position 2 or 3 so I can claim that I like racing my setup more. 👍

Good thing my setup was on position 4, otherwise I'd think you were talking about me. :dopey:

I actually went for the 5th or 6th spots a couple of times, only to find someone else there claiming it. But I must say, now that I've had the G25 for a while, it's hard for me to race on the other setups.

And by the way - Nick, It looks like some of the photos have disappeared from post #1. :odd:
