BlackDog, I've been running rFactor on a Mac as well. Runs ok as long as it's a 2 GHz Core 2 Duo and 9400M video at least.
I've been using CrossOver Games 8 to run it though, so that I ran run rF directly in Mac OS X and don't have to boot into Windows thru Boot Camp all the time. Works ok if run in DX8 and with not too many opponents.
As for mods, I'd say if you have a wheel then the sky's the limit, the Japanese F3 Mod is highly rated, as are the Caterham, Civic 4G and Historic GT (HistoriX) mods.
My personal favorite, though, is vintage Formula Vee. Has gotten good ratings all over, doesn't necessarily need a wheel (thumbsticks on a gamepad will do) and is likely to be the most fun you could EVER have with just 65 BHP. 👍
