Russian Invasion of Ukraine

Ukraine is now claiming that the Russians have taken control over a village just outside the Crimea, Strilkove.

The regional parlement of the Crimea has been dissolved by Kiev, as an symbolic act for the upcoming referendum.

Also, I have been thinking. If poop goes down in Ukraine, what will happen at Chernobyl? I know they are working on a new housing for the concrete coffin.

I doubt that will stop, no one wants to live next door for it. Off-topic... they're building it on rails so they can slide it over (rather than work directly over the reactor floor). Amazing stuff, and it takes them 15s to cook lunch :D

I can call spirits from the vasty deep.

Hotspur:
Why, so can I, or so can any man;
But will they come when you do call for them?

Even is we take Russia and the neo-nazi discussion out of the equation, Ukraine is still in deep trouble. One half of the country got rid of the president that the other half of the country had voted for. Now one half is happy because they got a revolution and the other half is pissed.

To solve the conflict, that is the issue they need to discuss with each other.

Well, the UK have a prime minister whose party only a 3rd of people voted for, it depends how your "democracy" works ;)

Two regions are under the control of forces that would take power (literal fact, not picking a side) and the only answer is for full, free, transparent elections to be held and honoured.

Ukraine, like any country, is complicated political mix (look at the United German-Nobility-Dom of Great Britain and The Green Bit, it's a stinking mess :D ) and it's going to be very difficult for her to find a way forward, the best way has to be through ballot, not bullet*.

*I think I read that on a poster in a left-wing vegetarian "restaurant" :)

It's the same in Sweden. The difference with Ukraine is that the revolution took place outside of the system and such a change is harder to accept because it's not part of the "contract" that everyone has agreed on.

Pedantry... but can a revolution take place inside the system?

Polling stations now open in Crimea for the pro-Russian vote.

They're open tomorrow for the anti-Russian voters but with slightly different "arrangements". :D

93% of Crimea votes for secession, according to the Beeb. *

That's a turnout of over 370%, very impressive indeed. **

* True

** A bit "made up"

Dmitriy Kiselyov, the media director and anchorman, has said on his TV program on Rossiya 1 channel today:
Russia is the world's only country that can turn USA into radioactive ash.
Uh oh.

This reminds me of something...
"We'll bury you!"

And something more:
Obama is going gray because he fears Russia!

Oh sh~~. :D

We already call Kiselyov "the Russian Joseph Goebbels". The "propaganda minister".

Ukraine has not moved an inch in 32,000 years. Tribes, troops and empires roll slowly back and forth. WWIII and radioactive ash have no place in the discussion of Ukraine.

Beware any hysterical stampede into stupidity.

I forgot to mention, the program was about the situation in Ukraine. But after telling about the "Ukrainian faschists looting and robbing and torturing people" and "terrorist organization Right Sector" (not surprising), Kisel smoothly switched to the "radioactive ash" and "graying Obama", lol.

I watched this today and almost dropped my jaw on the floor.

50% of the votes counted and 95% votes for joining Russia..

Missed a part of my post.

The USA and EU will not recognize the outcome because it does not hold up to international standards. Kerry has already treatened with "very heavy" sanctions if the annexation goes through. And the EU? The EU shows it has no balls by being reluctant about imposing santions on Russia.

That's the way we vote. Welcome to Russia. :D

I wanted to add that it is a proper Russian election.

Also, the G8 has let Russia know that the G8 will return to being the G7 if they continue with this.
How much will this situation affect the Russian economy, and after that, the European economy, seeing the EU is a serious importer of Russian goodies..

Even CNN is showing large crowds dancing and singing in the streets. There can be no doubt the overwhelming majority of Crimeans favor very close ties with mother Russia.

The EU wants to be careful about sanctions, as Russia is currently a vital supplier of natural gas and trading partner. So if Victoria Nuland has laid Europe's nads upon the chopping block, what's it to us? You're either with us or against us. We like this game.

Yeah, but Russia would also have a problem if the Euro's don't flow towards Putin's pockets.

So, not only the EU has their nuts on the block, the Russian executioner has one slipped out of his tighty whities.

Yes, but think of all the high-minded fun that you are enjoying by us starting your revolution?

The only russian i know is.

Da-дa-Yes
Nyet-нет-No
Do Svidaniya-до свидания-Goodbye

I had to use google translate to spell it, but I can pronounce it

So, the "historic Russian land" was returned. "Welcome home, Crimea!"
What's next? Alaska? :D

Yeah, but Russia would also have a problem if the Euro's don't flow towards Putin's pockets.
Nicely said - Putin's pockets, not ours. :D:tup:

That's an outrageous lie and his bank records can prove it. :D

The West are saying (rightly under International law, as I understand it) that they do not recognise the validity of the referendum. It follows in theory that if Russia/Crimea form an armed barrier to stop the Ukraine from entering then that is an entirely military act unsupported by law.

However, to repeat Kerry's quote, "it looks like they're using different lawyers from us".
