Sony Playstation VR Headset ThreadPS4

@torque99 have you seen the patch notes regarding the upcoming PS4 update 5.0?

One of the points is
"PSVR is also adding 5.1ch and 7.1ch virtual surround sound support."

You may have a chance still!

Don't think that will help much, as you're still stuck with the subpar VR processing unit for actually handling the audio.

What a surprise, the ps vr bombed. Poor effort by sony, it needed alot more games and a better price. It is right up there with the ps move for all hype and no show. I simply can't wait to jump to xbox one x and leave behind the disappointment that was....ps4.

I think you're on the wrong forum with that kind of trolling ;)

The PS VR has sold more than a million units thus far. Not bad for that kind of tech.

Sorry, when i say bombed, i mean for the customer. Despite its good sales, the consumers have been promised much more. Yet again, we are left dissapointed, with a large hole in the back pocket too. It really is such a poor lineup of games with 1 or 2 exceptions. Certainly not justifying it's massive price tag, (ps4 pro is cheaper). It had potential, but the specs and games let it down.

VR isn't cheap. You say it's overpriced, but compare it to the Oculus and HTC Vive, and suddenly, it's cheaper by a large margin. And we've been given everything that was promised. They've not cancelled games, nor have they lied about the launch lineup or specs of the headset. I too, would like to see more triple A games for the system, and more are indeed coming.

So please do tell us how exactly Sony has done any of us wrong? We knew what we were going into when we got a new piece of technology. These things were never going to go mainstream overnight, and large scale development of VR games will not be done at the same volume as conventional games anytime soon for obvious reasons. That said, Sony has arguably done more good for the future of VR gaming than HTC and Oculus combined, by making a headset that is actually affordable, for a system that the user knows with complete certainty can actually run VR games. I'm not disputing that HTC and Oculus have also made great efforts in promoting VR games, but Sony has taken a far more realistic approach, by focusing not on impressive, but pointless, technology, such as HTC room scale VR, and instead focusing on simply making a headset that works well, and making sure it works well on a system already owned by more than 60 million people.

Despite only owning 3 VR games as we speak, I don't regret my purchase. I absolutely love Battlezone VR. RIGS is pretty great, although suffering from a far too short match length that makes it impossible for me to really enjoy it. Journey was just plain wasted potential. RE7 looks amazing in VR, and the only thing that has kept me from getting it is fear of it being simply too scary for me. And Ace Combat 7 will have my attention for a very long time, in part due to its VR component. I'd argue that while PC VR is getting swarmed by tech demos and low quality indies, PlayStation VR, for the most part, is at least keeping up a certain standard for the games being released, and with the backing of Sony, will see more and better triple A studio games.

Really, the one large complaint that some might have regarding Sony's handling of the PS VR is not getting behind or supporting adult content. It's a lucrative and very obvious market for Sony to extend into, and there's no reason that adult exclusive content can't co-exist with the non age exclusive content on the system. But even then, we knew going into it that Sony was unlikely to extend into that market, and I doubt it's a big deal for many.

What concerned me is that Sony said there would be 150 titles by Xmas. Is there even 100 right now? I believe VR is the futer, not for everyone, not for all the time, but I think it is going to be a huge part of gaming when 4k with current non VR gen graphics is the norm. But the non appearance of 150 games at Xmas along with lack of great VR titles has me a bit unsure of investing any time soon.

"The headset maker said this week that more than 220 software titles and experiences are development for the device, and more than 100 of those will be released this year."

"Sony also confirmed that 100 titles have released on PSVR as of February 19th."

I don't think Sony ever said that they'd have 150 games out by the end of 2016, as that many games releasing within a little over 2 months for a new piece of tech is unheard of. If you mean by the end of 2017, well, then they're well on their way to making that target. In any case, I can't actually find any articles stating that Sony has promised that amount of games.

A comprehensive, but not entirely complete (I think) list of games and experiences that came out between October and end of January. I think it's a pretty impressive list.

I don't have links ( probably could find them easily enough when I have time) but I'm pretty certain it was 2016 unless I miss read, which I don't think I did tbh.

Overall, although I use my Oculus Rift far more, the PSVR has been a nice surprise. I use the Rift on my PC mainly for sim racing titles. My PSVR, however, is my preferred headset for non-sim racing VR titles because of its superb selection of games and experiences. Resident Evil 7 is the killer VR game, its easily the best VR game out there IMO. Other great games include Farpoint (with the aim controller) and Batman Arkham VR. Call of Duty and Battlefront have short VR experiences that are great for folks that just want to try out VR.

So I decided to try to get my PS VR working on the PC today. Using Trinus PSVR, which has a free trial for those wanting to try it out first, I am able to play VR games on my PC with partial head tracking. What I mean by that is that it uses the gyroscopes within the HMD to track where you are looking, and it does so rather well. But you won't be able to actually move around in games via head movement. If you acquire 2 or 4 webcams, there's another application that should be able to track the lights on the HMD, as well as any Move controllers you might want to use.

I'm stuck with a refresh rate of 60, so quick games are out of the question, but for slower movements, it's perfectly good.

New revised version of the PSVR headset incoming.

New PSVR.
Same PSVR price.

Slightly different product number, they changed the "1" to a "2", as in "CUH-ZVR2"

I was so close to clicking "Buy", and then I read the news.

For US members interested in the new PSVR availability date, this blog page might be a good resource:-

https://blog.us.playstation.com/2017/10/02/playstation-vr-the-ultimate-faq/

It explains such arcane aspects as "HDR pass through", which is awkward to say the least on the "CUH-ZVR1". If you plan to have an HDR TV, read the blog page.

Having just picked up a PS4 Pro (for GT Sport) brings me to looking at PSVR, fill me in please guys! dead tech or worth a punt at this stage? to me it doesn't look like many games are making use of it.

I might be wrong but I think GT Sport only uses it in a limited capacity, like only when you have one opponent and it doesn't work on all tracks.

As for wider support it doesn't look all that promising to be honest, it hasn't exactly set the world alight and support has been quite limited with most games only offering some sort of tacked on experience for it. If Xbox doesn't also release a VR headset soon then I can imagine few third parties will bother to support PSVR.

I wouldn't buy it for GT Sport. As Robin said, PD has half assed their VR implementation, and so, GT Sport will only feature limited VR.
As for VR being dead tech. I don't think so. Playing VR games is outright amazing. I really cannot overstate how cool it is to actually be in the game world. This was the first proper outing for VR, and developers are still trying to figure out what kind of control schemes and game mechanics work with it. It's not going to happen overnight. There's also no denying that our current consoles limit just what can be done with it.

Battlezone VR alone is worth the cost of the headset as far as I am concerned. Such a fun game that has enough depth to be engaging for a long time. I agree with Robin that the HMD has failed to attract a large number of triple A studios, which is a shame, but I'd also say it has done a better job at avoiding tech demos that have flooded the PC VR market. I have high hopes for VR.

Look on the store for VR games then check some reviews of them before you buy PSVR. Certainly not worth it just for GTS. I don't see VR being dead tech, its going to get better and better. This first gen PSVR might not get much better though whilst paired with the PS4s limitations.

Its biggest problem is indeed the PS4, especially the standard one, is it doesn't really have the grunt to do the headset justice. Dev's are limited to working with its minimum specs which have hampered things tremendously.

As for the headset itself it is in VR terms an affordable headset. To meet a price point some corners have been cut such as the resolution, image quality and tracking fluidness. Basically the PS4 needs to be much more powerful and the headset has to be a bit more expensive but Sony knew that would be a hard sell.

They probally took the right approach, anyone who has it and is pleased with it will surely buy a newer and better PSVR even at a higher price if it has to be priced higher. The current adopters also justify Sony upping the specs next time round rather than just making it as cheap as possible.

I'm tempted by the Black Friday deal on this.

I mean, PSVR + Camera + VR Worlds + GT Sport for 299€ is a damn good deal.

And I don't have GT yet.

That's the version 1 PSVR without the HDR pass thru, and the revised cabling

The Skyrim VR bundle has the latest PSVR model, which probably explains its higher pricing

Haven't come across that pack over here yet, but thanks for the information.

This may help you if HDR pass thru might be important to you. (It is to me. I don't want to be plugging and unplugging cables incessantly). I could just see the model number on the photo of the packaging. Sony is coy about it.

"The previous PS VR’s model number is CUH-ZVR1, and the new PSVR’s model number is CUH-ZVR2," reads a post on the Sony blog. "Also, the product image on the packaging will be updated to show changes on the new model, like the integrated headphones on the VR headset."

This is still a very very good deal if you are looking for an entry level VR and have not picked up GTS yet..I payed £349 last year+£50 Camera + VR World game + £60 GTS ! :ill:

I saw this deal on amazon last night and my fingers are itching to press buy, I've been really good at my intention to wait until the 2nd generation emerges to get one but I think they've just beaten me with that price :nervous:

I doubt we'll get a true second generation on the PS4. The next iteration will be on the next generation of console, as the PS4 is the primary limiting factor here, not the headset.
