Petronas re-thinking? Now that's very interesting indeed... I know it was in talk since the BMW Sauber days but this happening again is unexpected since I think Petronas has a good future with Mercedes.

Jaime up for third driver for Mercedes? Well, Cepsa being unhappy is understandable though but this is very interesting and I am very interested to see what's coming out of this.

Well this is the last of Schumacher's scheduled 3 years. I wonder who might replace him...

Schumacher and Ross Brawn have both stated that they would be open to the option of an extension. If Schumacher smashes Rosberg this year (I predicted he would at least beat him) then maybe he'll stay.

Edit: I've done a Mikael Blomkvist and had the articles I was looking for disappear. I did however, find this.

Hmm. Somehow I don't see Schumacher 'smashing' Rosberg by any stretch of the imagination.

You think? Even though Mecedes flatter to deceive, Schumacher hasn't even scored a podium since coming back. I can appreciate his drive, desire and commitment, but he isn't as good as he used to be. Especially in a car that isn't anywhere near as competative as what he used to drive.

Rosberg's been the more competative of the two.

I think he can beat Nico. He was a lot closer this season. Which either says that Schumi's getting better or Nico's getting worse.

Maybe it's just wishful thinking though.

These.

I think Nico has stagnated somewhat, what with having an uncompetative car with a big budget. When does his contract expire?

So safe is a word to describe Nico Rosberg.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Alguesuari replaces Schumacher, coinciding with Cespa replaicing Petrobas, perhaps?

Yes. Just hope he doesn't turn into another Nick Heidfeld.

Both of those are just speculation so far. I'm not sure though. Norbert Haug could choose Di Resta if he wishes. I'm pretty sure he had something to do with Paul getting the seat at FI. Perhaps he made it part of a revised engine deal with FI.

I'm not sure he would sign Alguersuari to Mercedes just like that. Of course if Cepsa pumped a of money into MGP, then he might.

Well, if Rosberg becomes a Heidfeld and Schumacher is finally left out to pasture, I wouldn't think it totally implausible to see a Di Resta/Alguesuari line up. You read it here first, folks!

Of course, it's a massive 'if' written in block capitals but hey, this is the speculation thread...

It's not written in block capitals. :sly:

I don't see Rosberg getting dropped unless he starts underperforming, but he was worried about not having any wins going into his 6th season. He'll definitely worry about having none going into his 7th season. I'm not necessarily expecting Di Resta to get the call up to MGP either. He'll need to firmly beat Nico for that to happen. Mercedes, Norbert Haug and (more recently) Anthony Hamilton got him this far. He'll have to do the rest or it's not going to happen.

I'm hearing reports that Vitaly Petrov has a contract with Caterham to replace Trulli, but he needs to produce his funcding in the next few days before it will be announced. If he does not produce the money, Trulli will keep his seat.

Could you provide a link if at all possible? Or were these reports of a more verbal nature? :)

It's Joe Saward, so take it with a grain of salt. Even he seems a little sceptical, since he calls the article "Tittle-tattle from the F1 world".
He certainly seems a little unconvinced, I agree. What interests me is that, if what is rumored is in fact true, Petrov was replaced at Lotus because his money took it's sweet time in joining the party. Could this possibly have been his sponsors hesitating? Could they be losing confidence in Vitaly?

More likely they weren't keen on the way the team was just using the money to pay off their debt to Vladimir Antonov and Bank SNORAS. It was, after all, coming from the Russian government, and the money from Lotus Cars was delayed by the Malaysian government for the same reason. What's more, Antonov was arrested in November for fraud and embezzlement.

Also, the political situation in Russia at the moment is a little sensitive. Vladimir Putin did not win the recent elections in the landslide that he was anticipating, and has been forced to form a minority government to keep the United Russia Party in power. There have been accusations of vote-rigging and the stuffing of ballot boxes, and some democratic protests. For now, the Kremlin probably considers this to be far more important than funding Petrov's career.

Wasn't he replaced last year!

Sort of kind of. RBR and HRT made a deal I believe and that is why we saw Daniel in the seat. If you remember Narain was put back in the car for the India GP and did pretty good. So he was put to third driver for a time.

I hope with them running the williams kers they'll do good. I guess they need the Tata backing still. I also hope the kers for williams is no longer what it was last year and that with all the major changes made at HRT they do something more towards what Caterham have been doing the past two years. Reaching the mid pack.

They must've really needed that Tata money. A lot of potential that they could've gone with instead of Narain. Oh well. I'm sure will be the same old song and dance from the back two teams.

In a past life, Narain Karthikeyan must has been either the Pope or a Russian President - just when you think he's gone for good, he comes back for another round.

Coincedentally, it is groundhog day in the States. Bill Murray spectacular.

Well he's not a driver but I don't think it was worth making a thread just for him - James Key (technical director) leaving sauber to join one of the other teams based in the UK. A bit of surprise to me. I'd like to believe he's going to back to Williams but Lotus looks more obvious as they need all the help they can get.

Also I couldn't help but notice the currently confirmed Caterham drivers are listed as TBA on the Jerez test roster:

Here's hoping.
